Amed is a coast road with villages strung along it
The sun drops behind a volcano here and the bay turns copper. Jukung outriggers rest on the black sand. Speedboats swing at anchor off the point. Mount Agung, 3,031 m and the highest ground on Bali, stands over the whole coast. Every village on the strip gets that view. Where you sleep decides everything else. 1
The coast runs about 14 km east from Culik. Wikivoyage names the villages along it: Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Lean, Selang, Banyuning and Aas. Amed village comes first from Culik, then Jemeluk, then Bunutan, then Lipah. Booking sites flatten all of them into one word. The road does something else, and so does the price. 2
Season is the easy part. April to October is the dry stretch on this coast, 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, with the clearest water for snorkelling and diving. November to March brings the rain and the murk. Book the village for the water you came for, and book the months the water is worth it. 10
- Jemeluk, the working hub. The bay dives from 3 to 30 m and suits a first dive, macro work and photography. Amed village sits a short walk west, and that is where the cheapest published beds on the strip are. 11, 4
- Bunutan, the hillside. Rooms climb the slope above the water, and the Pyramid site offshore runs 5 to 40 m as a drift. One resort here describes its own perch as hillside above a fishing village, looking across the Lombok strait. 11, 12
- Lipah, the garden end. A black sand bay, a cottage hotel open since 1991 with its own dive centre, and villa rates quoted in euros with a scooter in the price. , 8
Which Amed village should you book?
One coast road, three beaches, two bills that both move with the village you pick.
The village sets the dive-day price as well as the room rate. Ecodive Bali, based at Jemeluk and the oldest shop on this coast, charges USD 75 for two dives at Jemeluk Beach, USD 80 at Bunutan and the Pyramids, and USD 85 at Gili Selang or the Japanese wreck. Its open water course is USD 375. Diving off your own beach drops the transfer. 3, 2
| Village | Nearest named dive water | Published nightly rate | Two dives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amed village and Jemeluk | Jemeluk Bay, 3 to 30 m | IDR 400,000 to 795,000 (USD 22.33 to 44.37) | USD 75 |
| Bunutan | Amed Pyramid, 5 to 40 m | EUR 125 to 200 a room; EUR 7,350 a week for the whole villa | USD 80 |
| Lipah | Black sand bay with an on-site dive centre; Gili Selang east | EUR 232 to 290 a villa | USD 85 at Gili Selang |
Nightly rates are the figures each operator prints on its own site on 26 September 2026: Two Fish Divers' partner range and Bali Dive Resort Amed for the rupiah band, Villa Bukit Segara for Bunutan, Villas Bukit Lipah for Lipah. Rupiah converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. Euro rates are not converted here; check today's rate before comparing the euro and rupiah columns.
Table view: Two dives, by where you dive them
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Jemeluk Beach | $75 |
| Bunutan and the Pyramids | $80 |
| Gili Selang or the Japanese wreck | $85 |
Ten dollars separates the cheapest site from the dearest on one two-dive trip. Five such trips, ten dives, puts USD 50 between them. Base yourself beside the water you want to repeat. Source: 3
Diving is why most people come, so price the dive day before the bed. Five two-dive trips from Jemeluk at USD 75 comes to USD 375, which is exactly what the same shop charges for a full open water course. For a longer stay, price a diving month in Amed first, then choose the village that suits it. 3
What does a bungalow in Amed cost a night?
The rupiah floor sits under USD 25. Two Fish Divers, based at the Amed Beach Resort in the main village, puts its partner accommodation between IDR 400,000 a night for a budget homestay and IDR 650,000 at the Amed Beach Resort. Breakfast in both, and both a walk from the dive centre. At IDR 17,917.00 per dollar that is USD 22.33 to USD 36.28. 4, 6
A step up, the beachfront dive resorts print their own rates. Bali Dive Resort Amed asks IDR 745,000 for a deluxe double or twin and IDR 795,000 for a superior double with an open-air bathroom and a hot tub, each room 30 square metres, on the black sand in the middle of Amed village. About USD 41.58 and USD 44.37. 5, 6

Villa Bukit Segara adds 15 per cent tax and service, and its site footer still reads 2019. Villas Bukit Lipah includes breakfast, drinking water, laundry, beach beds and a scooter in the rate. Blue Moon Villas sits in Selang, one bay east of Lipah, and stands here as the top of the strip's range. Rupiah converted at IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar, 25 September 2026.

| Item | Value (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Budget homestay | 400,000 IDR |
| Room inside a dive package | 450,000 IDR |
| Amed Beach Resort | 650,000 IDR |
| Bali Dive Resort, deluxe | 745,000 IDR |
| Bali Dive Resort, superior | 795,000 IDR |
The whole rupiah band fits inside a single night at the euro-priced villas further east. Doubling the homestay rate buys a beachfront room at a five-star PADI dive resort on the same sand. Source: 4, 5
Jemeluk: the shallow bay and the cheapest beds
Jemeluk is where the coast works hardest. The bay reads 3 to 30 m, which makes it a first-dive site, a macro site and a photographers' site at once. Ecodive Bali runs from here, and Two Fish Divers puts its morning dives on the Jemeluk Bay house reef and the Coral Garden. Amed village is a short walk west, and the IDR 400,000 rooms are in it. 11, 3, 4

Stay here to walk to the water. Amed Lodge by Sudamala sits on Jemeluk Beach itself: seven renovated cottages up a run of stairs, 95 km from the airport, with Mount Agung across the water. Its nightly rate lives behind a separate booking system, so ask for it in writing before you count on it. 15
Bunutan: hillside rooms above the Pyramids
Bunutan trades beach steps for a view. Rooms here climb the slope, and the water below holds the Amed Pyramid, an artificial reef that drops from 5 to 40 m and dives as a drift. Baliku Dive Resort describes its own position as hillside above a fishing village, looking across the Lombok strait, 50 km by road from Mount Agung. 11, 12

Bunutan is the one village a property here will confirm in writing. Villa Bukit Segara prints its address, Jl. Raya Bunutan, on its own contact page. Rooms run EUR 125 for the seaside guesthouse, EUR 150 for the master bedroom and EUR 200 for the family room, each plus 15 per cent tax and service. 7, 16
For a group, the whole-house rate is the cheapest bed on the strip. EUR 7,350 a week works out at EUR 1,050 a night, and split across 16 people that is EUR 65.63 each. The house sleeps 16 to 18, was built in 2010 by the architect Joost Van Grieken, and keeps two cars with drivers at EUR 50 a day. 7
Lipah: the garden end, priced in euros
Lipah is quieter, greener and dearer. Villas Bukit Lipah looks over Lipah Bay from a permaculture garden and puts a scooter in the room rate, along with breakfast, drinking water, laundry and beach beds on Lipah beach. That scooter is itself a fact about the coast: buses between these villages are thin, and guests are expected to drive themselves. 8
The bay has kept small hotels for decades. A cottage hotel on the black sand of Lipah Bay opened in 1991, when the first bricks went down among corn fields, and it runs its own dive centre a short walk up the main road. Its sister property is minutes away. No nightly rate appears anywhere on its own pages.
One address here sits on the line between two villages. Villas Bukit Lipah gives its own address as Jl. Raya Lipah, Bunutan, Karangasem. Amed's boundaries blur on the ground, so book by the beach name and the map pin. On a stay of a fortnight or more, monthly stays against short bookings does the arithmetic. 8
Is an Amed dive resort worth the package price?
A stay-and-dive bundle starts at IDR 3,200,000, about USD 178.60. Two Fish Divers sells its own packages from that figure and prints a sample: IDR 1,300,000 for two dives plus IDR 450,000 a night with breakfast, diving the Jemeluk Bay house reef and the Coral Garden. Its open water course starts at IDR 5,850,000. 4, 6
- The saving lives in the diving, not the bed. A bundled night at IDR 450,000 sits above the IDR 400,000 homestay and well below the IDR 650,000 resort room. 4
- A package that fixes the site fixes the price. Ecodive Bali's two-dive trip runs USD 75 to USD 85 depending on where it goes, so a bundle tied to one bay locks in the cheaper end. 3
- Courses are the big line. An open water course is USD 375 at Ecodive Bali and from IDR 5,850,000 at Two Fish Divers. Price the course, then the room. 3, 4
- Compare like with like. MMT's guide to what a dive package includes lists the lines operators leave off the headline.
How do you get there and settle in?
Give the arrival day to the road. Bali Driver Hub prices a private car from Ngurah Rai airport to Amed at IDR 875,000 for a standard car and IDR 1,650,000 for a big car, over 97 to 100 km, in 2 hours 35 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes. Two Fish Divers calls the same run about two hours. Budget USD 48.84 and a lost afternoon. 9, 17, 6
Arrive in daylight
The last stretch is coast road through Culik, and the villages come in order: Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah. Daylight makes the map pin obvious. 2
Sort the wheels on day one
The villages sit kilometres apart on one road. A Lipah villa includes a scooter; elsewhere, agree transport with the hotel before the evening you need it. 8
Book the first dive off your own beach
Two dives at your home bay cost USD 75 at Jemeluk and USD 80 off Bunutan, with the transfer left out of the bill. 3
Amed is one stop on a longer Bali trip for most people. The road carries on north to Tulamben and the USAT Liberty, 20 to 30 minutes away, the dive most shops here sell as a day trip. The ship was a US Army transport torpedoed off Bali in the Second World War and beached at Tulamben; the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung slid it off the beach into the sea, where it lies fully submerged. 2
Plan the rest of the island around this coast, and around the dry months. April to October is the clear water. For the wider route, start with MMT's Indonesia travel guide, and compare the far south coast in where to stay in Uluwatu. 10
Frequently asked questions
Which village in Amed is best for diving?
Jemeluk. The bay dives from 3 to 30 m and suits a first dive, macro work and photography, and Ecodive Bali charges USD 75 for two dives there against USD 85 at Gili Selang. Amed village next door holds the cheapest published beds on the strip, from IDR 400,000 a night. 11, 3, 4
Which village is quietest?
Lipah, the furthest east of the three. A black sand bay with villas in gardens and a cottage hotel that opened in 1991, where the rates are quoted in euros from EUR 232 a night on a long stay. Selang, one bay further east, is quieter again, with villas from EUR 75. , 8, 14
How much is a bungalow in Amed a night?
IDR 400,000 to IDR 795,000 a night in Amed village and Jemeluk, about USD 22.33 to USD 44.37; EUR 125 to EUR 290 a room in Bunutan and Lipah. 4, 5, 7, 8, 6
Does a longer stay cut the rate?
At Villas Bukit Lipah, yes. Thirteen nights at the long-stay rate saves EUR 754 against the two-night rate. 8
Can I dive the Liberty wreck from Amed?
Yes, as a day trip. Tulamben and the USAT Liberty sit 20 to 30 minutes by road north of Amed, and Jemeluk and Bunutan sit nearer that road than Lipah. 2
How do you get between Amed's villages?
Drive yourself or agree it with your hotel. The strip runs about 14 km east from Culik and public transport along it is thin, which is why Villas Bukit Lipah builds a scooter into its nightly rate. 8, 2
When should I go?
April to October, the dry season here: 25 to 30 degrees Celsius and the clearest water for diving and snorkelling. 10
How long does the airport transfer take?
Two and a half to three hours, IDR 875,000 in a standard car. 9
