Where to stay in Uluwatu: areas, prices and the scooter question

The Bukit is one name and several prices

Uluwatu is a headland, not an address. The Bukit Peninsula hangs off the south end of Bali on a shelf of limestone. Cliffs drop into reef. The surf lines up along the west coast and the villas line the clifftop above it. Turn down one lane and you reach a warung village with a path to the beach. Turn down the next and a gate opens onto a pool.

The price follows the lane. One Bali rental agency's own Uluwatu page runs from IDR 22,277,938 a month for a new 1-bedroom villa in Pecatu to IDR 300,000,000 a month for a 4-bedroom with an ocean view, also Pecatu. About 13 times, inside a single sub-area. ¹

So the question is narrower than where to stay in Uluwatu. It is which lane, at which price, and how you leave it at 6 p.m. when your phone shows no driver. Which area should you pick?

Four zones hold most of the beds, and the agency that lets monthly villas here tags them by name.

The tags on the listings are a fair map of the choice. The same agency sorts its Uluwatu stock into Pecatu, the Bingin residential side and the Balangan residential side, and each tag carries its own band. Pick the zone first and the price band follows. ¹

• Bingin is the walk-down-the-cliff option: a village of warungs and guesthouses above a reef beach, with bungalows and pool villas at a single address. One operator there prices bungalows from USD 65 a night and a 3-bedroom pool villa at USD 195. ³
• Pecatu is the wide one. It holds the temple, the Labuan Sait strip, the surf camp and the cliff resorts, and it carries both the cheapest monthly villa on the agency's list and the dearest. ¹
• Balangan is the quieter residential side, with a long left-hand wave below it. Two new 2-bedroom villas there let at IDR 35,000,000 and IDR 45,000,000 a month, about USD 1,953 and USD 2,512. ^{1, 2}
• Ungasan and Melasti sit east, on the white-sand bay along Jalan Uluwatu in Desa Ungasan, closer to the beach clubs and further from the reef breaks. ⁵

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands at the point itself, an active Balinese Hindu temple whose custodians set the terms for visitors. Treat it as a place of worship with a view attached, and ask at the counter on the day about dress and conduct. The village communities around it run the parking, the warungs and the rides in and out of the beach lanes.

How much does a villa in Uluwatu cost?

Six live monthly listings from one agency, marking the range across the peninsula on 26 September 2026.

A whole villa by the month starts near USD 1,243 and climbs past USD 16,000. The floor is a brand-new 1-bedroom in the middle of Pecatu at IDR 22,277,938, free from 21 October 2026. The ceiling on the same page is a 4-bedroom ocean view, also Pecatu, at IDR 300,000,000 a month, offered only from 16 October 2026 to January 2027. ^{1, 2}

Read the bedroom count before the zone. Bingin's turn-key 1-bedroom at IDR 37,500,000 costs more than Balangan's new 2-bedroom at IDR 35,000,000, so walking distance to the beach path is worth real money here. The rupiah moves as well. If the dollar weakens 10 percent, that IDR 45,000,000 month costs about USD 2,791 instead of USD 2,512, and the exchange-rate worksheet tests that before you commit. ^{1, 2}

What does a Bingin guesthouse cost?

One Bingin operator prints the whole ladder at a single address, from USD 65 to USD 195 a night. The boutique-hotel side sells a 1-bedroom deluxe bungalow from USD 65 and a 2-bedroom bungalow from USD 135. The private pool villas start at USD 140 to USD 145 for two bedrooms and four guests, and USD 195 for three bedrooms and six. ³

The trade is service against space. The bungalow rate buys a bed made every day and someone at reception; the monthly villa buys a kitchen, a lease and a month of your own time. Surf camp, guesthouse or cliff resort

The same night on the Bukit costs about USD 41 or about USD 1,079, depending on which band you book.

In dollars, the two ends of the Bukit sit 26 times apart. The cheapest whole villa by the month works out near USD 41 a night, and a two-bedroom villa at the eight-villa cliff resort near USD 1,079 on its own promotion. Between them, two people sharing a standard room at the Pecatu surf camp pay from GBP 560 each for seven nights with breakfast and lunch, or GBP 80 a night. ^{1, 9, 10, 2}

The surf camp is the one band where the price carries a day as well as a room. Breakfast and lunch, the pool, a sauna and ice bath, a surf-skate bowl and daily resident coaching all sit inside the weekly rate; lessons and most dinners are billed on top. A solo traveller in the same standard room pays from GBP 749 a week, so sharing saves GBP 189 each. ¹⁰

Can you rely on Grab and Gojek in Uluwatu?

The apps work across most of Uluwatu and stop at the gate of certain beaches. Local ojek pangkalan operators, the stand-based motorbike taxi men, hold the pickup rights inside some beach areas. A Bali-based travel writer names Padang Padang Beach, Uluwatu Temple, Single Fin and Pandawa Beach as places where a Grab or Gojek will fail to complete a pickup. ⁴

Two dated police reports put that pattern on the record. In April 2025 police described an argument at Melasti Beach on Jalan Uluwatu, Desa Ungasan, and stated the rule plainly: app drivers may not take passengers inside the Melasti Beach area. A pecalang, the customary security officer, separated the two drivers and sent the stand driver back to his post. ⁵

The earlier one is harder. In January 2023 a stand driver punched an app driver on Jalan Labuan Sait in Pecatu for taking a fare there. Police confirmed the assault, and the head of Pecatu's customary village said a licensed local transport group works the area through a cooperative. Both reports are old news. The practice they describe still shapes how you reach the sand. ¹¹

This is why the address matters more in Uluwatu than in Canggu. A villa 15 minutes' walk uphill from Bingin beach path is a fine place to spend a month with wheels, and a long afternoon without them. Price the transport with the room, in the same decision. ⁴

What does a scooter cost for a month?

Monthly hire from a named operator, the licence Indonesian law asks for, and the insurance wording that decides a claim.

A month's hire quoted by the month runs IDR 1,850,000 for a Lexi 155cc to IDR 6,500,000 for an Xmax Tech Max, about USD 103 to USD 363. Thirty days at another operator's daily rates runs IDR 1,950,000 to IDR 7,500,000, about USD 109 to USD 419. The mid-tier Nmax Turbo sits at IDR 3,500,000, roughly USD 195. ^{6, 7, 2}

DC Rental Bali prices by the month and Bali Rent Scooter by the day; 30 days of its cheapest bike, a Honda Beat at IDR 65,000, comes to IDR 1,950,000. The two are different bikes from different companies, so read what each rate includes before you treat them as one market. ^{6, 7}

Terms matter as much as the rate. A third operator working southern Bali advertises a zero-deposit policy: no card hold, no cash bond, and your passport stays in your pocket. It adds free delivery on hire of three days or more, and 24-hour English-speaking roadside help with a replacement bike for a mechanical failure. Ask for those three things by name. ⁸

Insurance follows the licence. World Nomads covers riding a scooter overseas when the rider holds the right licence for it and the activity was added to the policy at purchase. SafetyWing's nomad cover excludes charges from an accident where the rider skipped the helmet or the licence. In January 2023 Bali police asked rental owners to hire only to licensed riders, and reminded riders about helmets, licences and phones. ^{12, 13}

What do you sort out before you arrive?

Five things, and four of them are cheaper to do at home. The levy, the transfer, the licence and the insurance all settle before you land. The scooter is the one to decide after you have seen the lane your villa sits on.

   Pay the levy before you fly

   Bali's foreign-visitor levy is checked at tourist destinations and accommodations as well as at the airport, and the provincial tourism office ran that check at Uluwatu itself. Keep the voucher on your phone. ¹⁴

   Book the road transfer

   One named operator puts Ngurah Rai Airport about 18 km and 30 to 45 minutes from Uluwatu, and prices a private minivan for one to five people at IDR 250,000, about USD 14, with tax, fuel and an English-speaking driver included. ^{15, 2}

   Compare that with a scooter delivered

   Bali Rent Scooter's own list charges IDR 300,000 to bring a scooter from the airport to Uluwatu, more than its Seminyak run at IDR 175,000 or Canggu at IDR 225,000. For one person arriving, the delivery fee alone costs more than the whole minivan. ^{7, 15}

   Sort the licence

   Carry an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category on it, or plan on a local SIM C. Get the endorsement added at home, where it is a form rather than an afternoon. ⁸

   Put the scooter on your insurance

   Add the activity at purchase, wear the helmet, and read the exclusion wording before you ride. MMT compares the two product types in travel insurance against international health insurance. ¹²
