Where to stay in Cartagena: old city, Getsemaní or Bocagrande

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

One chain's own nightly rates, the 2 p.m. car rule inside the walls and the taxi to the sand, so you can pick a neighborhood before you book.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The walled city undercut Getsemaní at the one chain that prices both. On 28 September 2026 Viajero's own site asked COP 44,550 a night in the Centro and COP 51,597 in Getsemaní, a gap of COP 7,047, about USD 2.13. 1, 2
  • Cars leave the walled center at 2:00 p.m. Decreto 1698 has limited afternoon access to residents and permit holders since 15 December 2022, so an afternoon check-in finishes on foot. 3
  • The sand is in Bocagrande. Walled-city hotels answer the beach question with transfers to private clubs and taxi estimates of USD 1 to 2 each way. 4, 5
  • Getsemaní's bar streets are policed for noise. A city operation on 21 June 2024 checked 11 venues, closed one club and suspended sound at two more for crossing the decibel limit. 6
  • Read the street address, not the listing headline. Townhouse Cartagena sells online as a Getsemaní hotel and places itself in San Diego, inside the walls, on its own site. 7

The three addresses, side by side

The walls arrive before the city does. From the bay you see a low stone rim first, then terracotta roofs, then the bell tower behind them. Inside that rim sits the quarter UNESCO added to the World Heritage List in 1984, which its own description splits three ways: San Pedro, with the cathedral and the Andalusian-style palaces; San Diego, where the merchants and the middle class lived; and Getsemaní, which UNESCO calls the 'popular quarter'. 8

Almost every booking lands in one of three places. The walled city sells stone streets and a courtyard. Getsemaní, beyond the gate, sells murals and bar streets. Bocagrande, the high-rise peninsula, sells the beach. Price, noise, walking distance and sand separate them, and every figure below was read on 28 September 2026. This page is one stop on MMT's one month in Colombia route.

Decreto 1698 of December 2022 covers the walled Centro Histórico and names no area beyond the walls. Hotel quarters are the addresses each hotel publishes on its own site.

  • Price: at the one chain that publishes a rate for both, the walled city came in COP 7,047 a night below Getsemaní on 28 September 2026. 1
  • Noise: Getsemaní's bar streets carry active enforcement, and four city and national agencies ran a joint sound and security operation there on 21 June 2024. 6
  • Walking: the walled center closes to most traffic at 2:00 p.m., which suits an evening stroll and complicates a mid-afternoon arrival with a suitcase. 3
  • Beach: the sand sits in Bocagrande, and hotels inside the walls send guests there by private transfer or taxi. 4, 5

Is Getsemaní cheaper than the old city?

The usual advice says yes. The one operator pricing both neighborhoods on the same day said the opposite.

On 28 September 2026 Viajero Hostels priced its Cartagena Centro hostel below its Getsemaní hostel and rooftop, on the same day, from the same chain. Both were promotional 'from' prices on the chain's own booking site, marked 19 and 18 percent off an unstated standard rate. At Colombia's official rate of COP 3,306.86 to the dollar for 26 to 28 September, that is USD 13.47 against USD 15.60. 1, 2

Multi-night rows are the nightly rate multiplied out, before any weekly discount the chain may apply at checkout. The gap runs toward Getsemaní and widens with every night booked, from COP 7,047 to COP 49,329 over a week. One chain is one data point, and it points the other way from the usual advice. Source: 1, 2

One chain settles nothing on its own. Sofitel Legend Santa Clara, Bastión Luxury Hotel and Casa San Agustín all sell rooms through a booking widget, so a live date search is the only route to a rate on their own sites. Treat any figure you meet on an aggregator as a quote to confirm with the hotel before you pay. 5, 4, 9

How loud is Getsemaní at night?

On 21 June 2024 the city walked into Getsemaní's bars with a decibel meter. The Secretaría del Interior, the Plan Titán 24 unit, the environmental agency EPA and the Policía Nacional checked documents at 11 commercial premises, closed one club over its permits, and suspended sound at two venues whose noise carried past their own property line. 6

That is the latest such operation the city has published, and it dates from 2024. Read it as a measure of how the neighborhood is policed: the bars run loud enough that four agencies turn up together. The murals and the rooftops are the draw, and the sound is part of the same street.

Ask two questions before you pay for a room here. Which side of the building does the room face, and how many doors away is the nearest bar? Getsemaní is a residential neighborhood with a nightlife district inside it, so the answer changes street by street. A courtyard room three floors up is a different city from a balcony over a sound system.

Can you walk everywhere inside the walls?

Since 15 December 2022 the walled center has closed to most traffic at 2:00 p.m. Decreto 1698, signed on 13 December that year, limits afternoon vehicle access inside the Corralito de Piedra to residents and owners holding a mobility permit. The city's own review after the first week reported fewer police-reported incidents and lighter night-time congestion. 3

For a visitor that settles the walkability question. From mid-afternoon the stone streets belong to people on foot, which is lovely at six in the evening and awkward at three with a suitcase on cobbles. Book the check-in before 2:00 p.m. where you can, and plan the last block as a walk when you cannot.

  1. Book the taxi through the hotel

The UK government's Colombia advice puts licensed phone, app and hotel-booked taxis ahead of street hails. Ask the hotel what fare it expects before the car arrives. 11

  2. Know the floor price

Cartagena's 2026 tariff sets a minimum taxi fare of COP 12,250, about USD 3.70, with COP 1,100 added from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. That is the floor for any ride in the city, whatever the distance. 10, 2

  3. Agree the airport fare before you set off

Zone fares from Rafael Núñez to each neighborhood are set separately from the citywide minimum, and the current table was unavailable when this page was researched. Ask the driver or the airport taxi desk to state the figure first.

  4. Expect the last stretch on foot

Inside the walls an afternoon drop-off may be a gate instead of a door. The distances are short; the cobbles are the reason to pack one bag.

  5. Carry the street address

Several hotels sell under a neighborhood name their own address contradicts. Townhouse Cartagena, widely resold as Getsemaní, gives its address as Carrera 7 No. 36-88 in San Diego, inside the walls. 7

Where is the beach?

Inside the walls the sand exists only in other people's photographs. Bastión Luxury Hotel, at Calle del Sargento Mayor No. 6-87 in the Centro Histórico, answers the beach question with private transfers to Makani Beach Club, off site. Sofitel Legend Santa Clara, at Calle Del Torno 39-29 in San Diego, publishes its own estimated taxi costs instead: USD 1 to Bocagrande, USD 2 to the beach ring road and El Laguito, and USD 15 to 20 to the Rosario Islands. 4, 5

Converted at Colombia's TRM of COP 3,306.86 per USD 1 for 26 to 28 September 2026. The Sofitel figures are the hotel's own rounded estimates for guests, a sense of distance instead of a metered fare or an official tariff. The airport's fee page gives the international tax as USD 51 and a news banner on the same site gives USD 54; the COP 196,000 printed beside it works out at USD 59.27 at the same rate. Take all three to the airline before you budget it.

So the beach is a taxi ride from either historic neighborhood. Stay inside the walls and the Caribbean is a short fare away by the hotels' own reckoning. Stay in Bocagrande and the sand is downstairs, with high-rise towers for the other twenty-three hours of the day. Choose the view you want at breakfast, then work backwards to the room. More Colombia planning sits in MMT's Colombia guides.

What the listing says and what the address says

A neighborhood label on a booking site is marketing; the street address is the fact. Townhouse Cartagena, an eleven-room art hotel sold online under a Getsemaní heading, places itself in the San Diego quarter of the walled Old Town on its own front page. Late checkout there costs COP 100,000, and breakfast comes free only on bookings made direct. 7

The best-known hotels inside the walls all print their addresses themselves. Casa San Agustín is at Calle de la Universidad No. 36-44 in the Centro, three colonial mansions joined by a 17th-century aqueduct, with two Michelin Keys in 2026 and a Leading Hotels of the World membership. Bastión is at Calle del Sargento Mayor No. 6-87. Sofitel Legend Santa Clara is at Calle Del Torno 39-29 in San Diego. 9, 4, 5

  • Open the hotel's own site and find the address in the footer or the contact page. That line decides the neighborhood.
  • Match the street to the quarter: San Pedro holds the cathedral, San Diego was the merchants' quarter, and Getsemaní is UNESCO's 'popular quarter' beyond the gate. 8
  • Walk the route on a map at the hour you will really walk it, from the bar you want to the door you booked.
  • Ask which side the room faces, and whether a late checkout carries a fee; Townhouse charges COP 100,000 for one. 7

Which neighborhood should you book?

Pick the neighborhood whose worst hour suits you. In the walled city the worst hour is a mid-afternoon arrival with luggage on cobbles after the cars are turned away. In Getsemaní it is 1:00 a.m. on a bar street with the windows open. In Bocagrande it is every walk back from dinner in the old town, at the city minimum fare or more. 3, 6, 10

A week gives you room to stop choosing. Split it, and each neighborhood gets the hours it is good at: the walls in the early evening, Getsemaní late, Bocagrande in the morning while the sand is cool. Remote workers weighing a longer stay should price the desk as well as the bed, which MMT's remote-work travel budget does line by line.

Frequently asked questions

Which Cartagena neighborhood is cheapest?

On the one same-day, same-operator comparison available, the walled city won. Viajero Hostels priced its Cartagena Centro beds from COP 44,550 a night on 28 September 2026 and its Getsemaní beds from COP 51,597, about USD 13.47 against USD 15.60 at the official rate of COP 3,306.86 to the dollar. Both were promotional rates that move daily. 1, 2

How much is a taxi in Cartagena?

Cartagena's Alcaldía set the 2026 minimum fare at COP 12,250, about USD 3.70, by Decreto No. 0051, with a COP 1,100 surcharge from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. that takes the floor to COP 13,350, about USD 4.04. That is the minimum for any ride; longer trips and airport zone runs cost more. Agree the fare before the car moves. 10, 2

Do I have to stay in Bocagrande for the beach?

Only if you want the sand downstairs. Hotels inside the walls treat the beach as an outing: Bastión runs private transfers to Makani Beach Club, and Sofitel Legend Santa Clara tells guests to budget about USD 1 for a taxi to Bocagrande and USD 2 to El Laguito. A few minutes of fare buys you the old city the rest of the day. 4, 5

Can I drive to a hotel inside the walled city?

Before 2:00 p.m., yes. After that, Decreto 1698 of December 2022 restricts vehicles inside the Centro Histórico to residents and owners with a mobility permit, so an afternoon taxi may stop at the edge and leave you the last stretch on foot. The rule has been in force since 15 December 2022; confirm it still stands when you book. 3

How safe is a night out in Cartagena?

The UK government's Colombia advice is national, and it names no neighborhood: book taxis by phone, app or hotel desk instead of hailing them, and watch drinks, because criminals have used incapacitating drugs in bars, restaurants, nightclubs and taxis. Colombia's single emergency number is 123. Getsemaní's venues carry separate noise enforcement, which is a sleep question. 11, 12, 6

Why do booking sites list hotels in the wrong neighborhood?

Because 'Getsemaní' sells. Townhouse Cartagena appears across booking sites under that heading and describes itself on its own site as an eleven-room art hotel in the San Diego quarter of the walled Old Town, at Carrera 7 No. 36-88. Open the hotel's own contact page and read the street address before you book. 7

What is the airport tax when I leave Cartagena?

Rafael Núñez International Airport's published fee schedule lists the 2026 domestic departure tax at COP 24,700, about USD 7.47, and the international tax at USD 51, printed beside a figure of COP 196,000. A news banner on the same site gives the international tax as USD 54 for 2026. Ask your airline which figure your ticket carries and whether it is already included. 13, 2
