Cobá and Valladolid from Tulum: a two-day loop

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The inland loop priced end to end: the colectivo out of Tulum, every site and cenote fee on the route, and the state line that changes the arithmetic.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Cobá's gate is 210 pesos for a foreign adult. Ek Balam's stacks to 691, Chichén Itzá's to 653. The federal INAH ticket is the small part of that bill; Yucatán's state CULTUR fee is the large one. 1, 2, 3
  • The colectivo from Tulum's Palacio Municipal to Cobá costs about 100 pesos and leaves when it fills. ADO's direct Tulum to Valladolid bus was 174 to 228 pesos for travel on 25 September 2026, about 45 minutes on the fastest run. 4, 5
  • VISITAX stops at the state line. Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors 2.5 UMA, about 293 pesos in 2026. Valladolid, Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá sit in Yucatán, which collects its own CULTUR fee at the gate instead. 6, 7, 2
  • Valladolid's two headline cenotes are priced by two very different operators. The municipal Cenote Zaci charges 150 pesos for adults after a rise from 60 in the 2024-25 season; privately run Suytun sells an online ticket at 250 pesos covering two cenotes. 8, 9
  • The doors for the whole loop come to about 1,941 pesos, roughly USD 113. Two archaeological zones, three cenotes, one convent and the colectivo seat, before a bed or a plate of food. 10, 1, 2, 9, 8, 11, 12, 4

Two days, two states, three ancestral cities

Cobá's Nohoch Mul pyramid stands at the end of a two-lane road through flat green forest, 43 km along State Highway 109 by INAH's own measure, in the municipality of Tulum. 1 Most people on the coast drive past that turn. Two days inland buys you the pyramid, a night in a working colonial city of 56,494 residents, and a second ancestral Maya city the next morning. 13

The loop crosses a state line, and the crossing changes the arithmetic. Cobá is Quintana Roo. Valladolid, Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá are Yucatán, where the state culture agency CULTUR adds its own charge on top of the federal ticket. 1, 2, 3 The same kind of gate costs 210 pesos on one side of that line and 691 on the other.

Every price below was read on the operator's own page on 25 September 2026: the colectivo out of Tulum, the site fees, four cenotes, the fares ADO quoted that day. Pesos come first. Dollar figures use the Federal Reserve's 17.2454 pesos to the dollar for 18 September 2026. 10 If sargassum has taken the beach that week, this is the trip that still works.

How do you get from Tulum to Cobá?

Three ways out of town, priced from the operators' own pages and booking widgets on 25 September 2026.

The fork is a shared van or your own car. Colectivos leave Tulum's Palacio Municipal for Cobá at about 100 pesos a seat, filling and going with no printed timetable and no formal stop at the far end. 4 ADO's direct Tulum to Valladolid service is the fast alternative, and it runs straight through. A car buys the ruins-hopping the buses make awkward.

ADO fares are live quotes for travel on 25 September 2026 and move with demand. ADO's Valladolid to Cobá page showed no seats on sale for that day, so there is no fare to print. Dollar figures use 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, the Federal Reserve's rate for 18 September 2026. Colectivo vans publish nothing; 100 pesos is the figure a Cobá lodging quotes.

  1. Get to the Palacio Municipal early

Colectivo vans to Cobá go from Tulum's Palacio Municipal at roughly 100 pesos a seat. They fill and leave, so ask the driver where he plans to drop you before you sit down. 4

  2. Pay at the gate in pesos

Cobá's INAH ticket is 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and 210 for foreign visitors. The zone opens at 08:00 and the window closes at 16:00. 1

  3. Settle the onward leg before lunch

Valladolid is the night stop. ADO lists a Valladolid to Cobá route, and its booking widget showed zero seats for 25 September 2026, so confirm the fare at the terminal window or agree a taxi price first. 15

  4. Cross into Yucatán

Once you leave Quintana Roo, CULTUR begins adding a state fee at the archaeological gates and the Quintana Roo visitor tax stops applying. 2, 6

The loop also closes through Cancún, which suits anyone flying home. ADO priced Valladolid to Cancún between 255 and 406 pesos for that day, and Cancún back to Tulum from 268 pesos on a bus that leaves roughly every half hour. 14, 16 MMT compares the full set of options in Tren Maya, ADO bus or a rental car, and the arrival city has its own page in the Cancún guide.

What do Cobá, Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá cost?

INAH prices its own tickets the same way across the loop: 105 pesos for Mexican nationals, 210 for foreign visitors at Cobá and Ek Balam. 1, 2 Chichén Itzá charges 105 pesos to everyone at the federal window. 3 The spread between the three sites comes almost entirely from Yucatán's state fee.

Yucatán residents are exempt from the CULTUR fee at both Yucatán sites. Ek Balam's 100-peso parking charge is levied per vehicle, and INAH's page records it as the right-of-way of the ejido of Hunukú, so a foreign visitor arriving by car stacks 791 pesos before a guide. Visits outside opening hours at Cobá and Ek Balam cost 730 pesos. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos, Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026.

Cobá charges the federal ticket alone, which is why the inland loop is the cheap half of a Yucatán week. The gap at the two Yucatán sites is the state fee. Ek Balam's 100-peso parking, collected for the ejido of Hunukú, sits on top of both figures and is charged per vehicle. Source: 1, 2, 3

Naming who collects each fee matters here. The parking charge at Ek Balam belongs to the ejido of Hunukú, a communal landholding whose members run the ground the road crosses, and INAH prints that on its own page. 2 Gran Cenote, on the road out of Tulum, is run the same way by the local ejido. 11 These are Maya communities charging for access to land they hold, and 774,755 people in Mexico spoke Maayat'aan at the 2020 census. 17

Cobá: the morning that earns the early start

Cobá spreads out under forest canopy rather than across an open plaza, and walking is the point. The zone sits on the Cobá-Chanchén Primero highway in the municipality of Tulum, 43 km along State Highway 109 by INAH's reckoning, open 08:00 to 17:00 with the last ticket at 16:00. 1 Arrive at opening and the heat is still an hour away.

The road out of Tulum passes Gran Cenote, which the local ejido operates at a reported 500 pesos for visitors and 120 for locals, with life jackets at 50 pesos, snorkel gear at 80 and lockers at 30. 11 That is the most expensive swim on this whole loop, and it is 20 minutes from your bed if you are staying in town. MMT prices the rest of the coast in the Tulum guide.

Is Valladolid worth the overnight?

A city of 56,494 people, two cenotes at opposite ends of the price range, and a convent that costs 40 pesos.

Valladolid is a city, with 56,494 residents inside the urban area and 85,460 across the municipality at the 2020 census. 13 That scale is the argument for the overnight. A market that serves residents, restaurants that stay open after the tour buses clear, and a plaza that fills in the evening because people live there.

The Ex-Convento de San Bernardino de Siena anchors the Sisal neighborhood a few blocks southwest of the plaza. Entry is free for people who live in Valladolid and 40 pesos for everyone else, with doors from 9:00 a.m. 12 It is the cheapest thing on this page and the one most day-trippers miss, because their bus leaves before the facade lights up.

Zaci's figure comes from a January 2025 press report of the municipality's own announcement, which described a rise from 60 pesos, about 150 percent. Gran Cenote publishes no official price page; the figure is a regional travel site's.

For a bed, Hotel Mesón del Marqués faces Parque Francisco Cantón with 90 rooms in a colonial building, and its own booking policy states that quoted rates already include 21 percent tax, with a surcharge for a third or fourth guest in the room. 19 The site publishes rates only through its live booking widget, so get the figure in writing when you hold the room.

Which second site: Ek Balam or Chichén Itzá?

Day two forces a choice, and the price gap runs the wrong way from the fame. Ek Balam costs a foreign adult 691 pesos at the two windows plus 100 for parking. Chichén Itzá costs 653. 2, 3 The lesser-known site is the pricier ticket, and it sits 30 km from your Valladolid bed while Chichén Itzá sits on Federal Highway 180 further west.

  • Ek Balam opens 08:00 to 17:00 daily with a 16:00 cutoff, and the ticket includes the site museum. Mexican students, teachers and senior citizens enter free. The 100-peso parking fee is the right-of-way of the ejido of Hunukú. 2
  • Chichén Itzá opens 08:00 to 16:00 with last access at 15:00, a shorter day than either other site, and it sits at Piste in the municipality of Tinum on Federal Highway 180. Yucatán residents pay the INAH ticket alone. 3
  • Cenote Ik Kil sits beside Chichén Itzá at 240 pesos general entry, life jacket, locker and parking included, open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and about 1.5 hours from Tulum by its own account. It makes the Chichén Itzá day a swim as well as a walk. 18

Pick on the shape of the day. Ek Balam plus Cenote Suytun keeps day two inside a 30 km radius of Valladolid and returns you to the coast by evening, for 691 plus 250 pesos at the windows. 2, 9 Chichén Itzá plus Ik Kil is the longer drive west and the earlier alarm, since the gate shuts at 16:00. 3, 18

What does the two-day loop cost?

Add every door on the route and one foreign adult pays about 1,941 pesos, roughly USD 113 at the Federal Reserve's 18 September 2026 rate. 10 That covers two archaeological zones, three cenotes, the convent and the colectivo seat. A bed, food, the Cobá to Valladolid leg and the ride back to the coast sit on top.

Lodging, meals, guides, Ek Balam's 100-peso parking, the Cobá to Valladolid leg and the ride back to the coast sit outside this total. A Mexican national pays less at every archaeological window: 105 pesos at Cobá, 105 plus 132 at Ek Balam. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos, Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026.

The swap that moves this total most is the cenote choice. Skipping Gran Cenote on the first morning and swimming at Cenote Zaci alone takes the two days down to about 1,441 pesos. Choosing Chichén Itzá over Ek Balam on day two takes 38 pesos off the gate and adds the drive. 11, 8, 3, 2 Country-level prices sit in the Mexico travel guide.

What time do the gates open and close?

Every gate on this loop stops selling tickets between 15:00 and 16:00, which is what makes the overnight work.

The clock runs this trip harder than the budget does. Chichén Itzá stops admitting visitors at 15:00, an hour before Cobá and Ek Balam. 3, 1, 2 Sleeping in Valladolid puts you inside that window on both mornings, which is the practical case for the second day rather than a long round trip from the coast.

Out-of-hours visits at Cobá and Ek Balam are priced at 730 pesos on INAH's own pages. The convent's closing time appears as 5:00 p.m. on one Valladolid source and 6:00 p.m. on another, so treat the late afternoon as uncertain.

One more thing the clock does on this loop. Cenote Suytun's own site warns visitors arriving from Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum that Yucatán runs an hour apart from Quintana Roo for part of the year, so a 4:00 p.m. last entry can arrive earlier than your phone suggests. 20 Check the time on a Valladolid clock the moment you step off the bus.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Cobá and Valladolid as a day trip from Tulum?

You can reach both in a day with a car and an early start, and you will spend the afternoon driving. The overnight exists because every gate on the loop shuts between 16:00 and 17:00, and Chichén Itzá stops admitting at 15:00. Sleeping in Valladolid puts you at a second site by opening time the next morning. 1, 3

What happens if you arrive at Cobá or Ek Balam after the last ticket window?

INAH prices an out-of-hours visit at both Cobá and Ek Balam at 730 pesos, well above the standard 210-peso foreign ticket sold before 16:00. Plan to reach the gate before the last-entry cutoff rather than pay the higher rate. 1, 2

Who gets free or discounted entry on this loop?

Mexican students, teachers and senior citizens enter Ek Balam free. Yucatán residents skip the CULTUR fee at both Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá, paying the federal INAH ticket alone. At Cenote Zaci, a Mexican visitor with an INAPAM senior card gets 50 percent off the 150-peso adult price. 2, 3, 8

Can you still climb the pyramid at Cobá?

INAH's own page for the Cobá archaeological zone lists the fees and the hours and stays silent on the climb, and this research found no primary statement either way in September 2026. Travel roundups disagree with each other. Ask at the ticket window on the day and follow the signage at Nohoch Mul. 1

Which cenote near Valladolid is cheapest?

Cenote Zaci, in the city center between streets 36, 37 and 39, at 150 pesos for adults and 75 for minors, with a 50 percent discount for Mexican visitors holding an INAPAM card. The municipality runs it. Suytun, five minutes out of town and privately run, sells an online ticket at 250 pesos that covers Suytun and Cenote Kaapeh. 8, 9

Is Ek Balam cheaper than Chichén Itzá?

For a foreign adult, Ek Balam costs more: 691 pesos at the two windows against 653 at Chichén Itzá, and Ek Balam adds 100 pesos for parking, which INAH records as the right-of-way of the ejido of Hunukú. For a Mexican national the order flips, at 237 pesos against 295. 2, 3

Does Yucatán run on the same clock as Quintana Roo?

Not for part of the year. Cenote Suytun's own site warns visitors coming from Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum that Yucatán sits an hour apart from Quintana Roo, which can make its 4:00 p.m. last entry arrive earlier than a phone still set to the coast's time suggests. Check a Valladolid clock as soon as you cross the state line. 20

What language will I hear on this loop?

Spanish and Maayat'aan, the Yucatec Maya language, which Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 people speaking across Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán. The ejido of Hunukú collects the parking fee at Ek Balam's gate, and these are ancestral cities of communities still living around them. 17, 2
