Komodo liveaboard vs day trip: which one to book

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Two named Labuan Bajo operators, their September 2026 prices, and what a day boat and a liveaboard each actually reach inside Komodo National Park.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Nine guided dives cost about IDR 9,375,000 across three day-dive days, or about IDR 11,225,000 on one 3-day liveaboard, same Labuan Bajo operator, park tickets counted in both. The extra IDR 1,850,000 buys two nights aboard, every meal and a Rinca dragon trek. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • A day boat is the cheapest dive in Komodo: IDR 916,667 each, against IDR 1,166,667 a dive on the 3-day, 2-night liveaboard. Per dive, every liveaboard tier costs more. 1, 2
  • South Komodo's dive sites open at four days. A day trip and a 3-day liveaboard both work the same North and Central Komodo water. 2, 1
  • Wild dragons are trekked at exactly two ranger stations, Loh Liang on Komodo Island and Loh Buaya on Rinca. Check that one of those two names sits on the itinerary you book. 5, 6
  • Carry IDR 650,000 per foreign visitor for a multi-day park ticket and IDR 350,000 for a day trip, in cash. Two operators quote the multi-day figure; the day-trip figure is Komodo Speedboat's. A 2024 government briefing states a flat IDR 250,000 a day. 7, 3, 4

Both boats leave from the same dock

Two kinds of boat leave Labuan Bajo before the town finishes breakfast. The day-trip speedboats cast off around 06:30 with a lunch box and a plan to be tied up again by five. The open-trip phinisi boards between 10:00 and 11:00, sleeps up to twelve guests, and wakes them under Padar. Same harbour, same park, two very different weeks. 3, 7, 1

Labuan Bajo is the only way in. The airport sits about 1 hour 10 minutes from Bali by air, and the harbour is roughly ten minutes from the terminal. There is no airstrip inside the park and no ferry hopping between the islands, so every stop on both trips starts from this one dock. 5

The clean way to price the choice is to hold the diving constant. Dive Komodo sells both a day boat and a 3-day liveaboard, so the comparison runs on one operator's own rates. Three separate day-dive days give nine guided dives for about IDR 9,375,000 with the park's tickets added. Its 3-day, 2-night trip gives the same nine dives for about IDR 11,225,000. 1, 2, 3

The gap is about IDR 1,850,000, or roughly $103 at Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 25 September 2026. That money buys two nights aboard, full board, a ranger-led dragon trek on Rinca, and morning dives that begin where you fell asleep. Three hotel nights, dinners and harbour taxis in town sit outside the day-trip figure. 8, 2

What does a Komodo day trip cost?

Two named Labuan Bajo operators, their own published rates on 26 September 2026, park ticket billed separately by both.

A certified diver pays IDR 2,750,000, about $153, for a day boat with three guided dives. The park entrance ticket rides on top, in cash at the dock. Everything else is in the fare: tanks, guide, boat, the long run out and the long run home. 1

The same boat sells three other seats. Discovery Scuba puts a first-timer in the water with an instructor for IDR 3,000,000. A snorkeling day costs IDR 1,300,000. A refresher dive, for someone dry a few years, is IDR 600,000. A reader without a certification card sees the same islands for less money. 1

Komodo Speedboat quotes in US dollars; the rupiah column converts at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR of IDR 17,917.00 per USD on 25 September 2026. Dive Komodo quotes in rupiah; its dollar column uses the same rate. Park entrance tickets are separate in every row. Komodo Speedboat advises against January to March and cancels most schedules in those months.

  1. 06:45, the dock

Boarding at Labuan Bajo harbour. The shared speedboat tours leave a quarter of an hour earlier, at 06:30. 1, 3

  2. 10:00 to 11:00, the first descent

The day boat reaches its first site around Central Komodo and the first dive goes in. Most of the morning has gone to the run out. 1

  3. Midday and mid-afternoon

Two more guided dives, with surface intervals and lunch aboard between them. The operator calls its own schedule a general guideline, because sites shift with weather, sea state and the level of the divers on board. 1

  4. 16:00 to 17:00, back alongside

The boat is tied up in Labuan Bajo again, which is the whole argument for a day trip: you sleep in a bed in town and pay for a hotel, not a cabin. 1

What does a Komodo 3 day boat trip cost?

There are two kinds of 3-day boat, and about IDR 6,750,000 between them. Nadia, a wooden phinisi running open trips for up to twelve guests in five cabins, charges IDR 3,750,000 per person in a Deluxe Cabin Sea View and IDR 4,250,000 in the Master Cabin. Dive Komodo's Tatawa charges IDR 10,500,000. 7, 2

The difference is tanks. Nadia's fare carries crew, full-board meals, harbour pickup and drop, snorkeling gear, life jackets, a licensed guide, drone service and a photographer, and its sea days are snorkeling days. Tatawa's fare carries nine guided dives. A snorkeler who wants a phinisi and a sunrise books the first; a diver books the second. 7, 2

With less time: With one day instead of three, the three headline stops on day two (Padar, Pink Beach and a dragon trek) fit into a single speedboat loop, because the in-park legs between them run 20 to 40 minutes. 5

The operator prints its own dollar figures of about $656, $875 and $1,094, which imply a rounded rate near IDR 16,000 per USD. The USD column here converts at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR of IDR 17,917.00 on 25 September 2026, so it reads higher. The same page lists IDR 12,000,000 for the 3-day trip in 2027, and a 6-day tier whose price this research could not read.

The fourth day is where the map changes. IDR 3,500,000 more buys four extra dives, about IDR 875,000 each, plus the first sites in South Komodo and a Padar trek. Another IDR 3,500,000 on top brings the trip to seventeen dives over five days. Per extra dive, the longer trips get steadily better value. 2

Which option is cheaper per dive?

The day boat, by a clear margin. Three dives for IDR 2,750,000 works out at IDR 916,667 a dive, about $51. Nine dives for IDR 10,500,000 works out at IDR 1,166,667, about $65. The boat that sleeps in town delivers the cheapest tank in the park. 1, 2, 8

The 3-day liveaboard is the worst value per dive on the operator's own price list. Take the liveaboard fare as payment for nights, meals, dawn dive sites and reach, and take the day boat as payment for diving alone. Source: 1, 2

So the liveaboard fare buys something other than cheap diving. It buys the two hours each way a day boat spends commuting, a bed at the dive site, sunrise on Padar at an hour no day tour departs for, and water beyond a day boat's range. Priced as diving, it loses. Priced as a week, it changes what the week is. 5, 2

Day-dive days are 3 x IDR 2,750,000 at Dive Komodo's published rate; the liveaboard line is the same operator's 3-day, 2-night fare. Park entrance uses Komodo Speedboat's IDR 350,000 day-trip figure and the IDR 650,000 multi-day figure both operators quote for foreign visitors. Flights to Labuan Bajo, hotel nights, dinners ashore, tips and gear rental beyond each fare sit outside both columns. Dollar equivalents at JISDOR IDR 17,917.00 on 25 September 2026.

What does each option actually reach?

Komodo Island is about 40 km out, and that distance sets everything else. A modern speedboat runs it in roughly two hours; a phinisi takes four to four and a half. Rinca sits at about 22 km, Padar at about 30, Manta Point at about 35. Those are one operator's working numbers, rounded, and they move with sea state and tide. 5

Distance and transit time from Labuan Bajo harbour, one operator's daily working figures, read 26 September 2026 5

Padar Islandabout 301 to 1.5 hrabout 3 hr
Manta Point, Karang Makassarabout 35about 1.5 hrabout 3.5 hr
Komodo Island, Loh Liang ranger stationabout 40about 2 hr4 to 4.5 hr

The operator states these are the rounded numbers its crews use daily, and that real times shift with sea state, tide and vessel. Pink Beach sits in the same band as Manta Point, which is why one long day can take both.

Inside the park, the legs are short. Padar to Pink Beach is a 30 to 40 minute run. Pink Beach to the Loh Liang dragon dock is another 20 to 30. In the operator's own framing, the expensive miles are the ones getting out there, and that is exactly why a single day can still chain Padar, Pink Beach and a dragon trek together. 5

South Komodo is the exception. On Dive Komodo's own tiering, those sites appear once a trip runs four days or longer. A day trip and a 3-day liveaboard both work the same North and Central water. If South Komodo is the reason for the flight, four days is the entry price. 2, 1

Where are the Komodo dragons?

Wild dragons are trekked at exactly two places. Loh Liang on Komodo Island and Loh Buaya on Rinca Island, both ranger stations with their own visitor resorts. Padar, the sunrise ridge at the centre of most itineraries, has no resident dragons, and the beach-and-reef stops (Kelor, Kanawa, Sebayur, Siaba, Taka Makassar) are dragon-free. 5, 6

So read an itinerary for those two names. A promise of Komodo National Park on its own says nothing about dragons. Rinca is the closer station, 45 to 60 minutes out by speedboat against about two hours for Komodo Island, which is why short trips favour it. 5

  • Dive Komodo, 3 days, 2 nights: a dragon tour on Rinca Island, alongside nine dives in North and Central Komodo. 2
  • Dive Komodo, 4 days, 3 nights: dragons plus a Padar Island trek, with thirteen dives reaching South Komodo. 2
  • Nadia, 3 days, 2 nights: a ranger-led dragon trek on Komodo Island itself on day two, between Pink Beach and Taka Makassar. 7
  • A one-day loop: whichever station the day's route can reach, usually Rinca on distance alone. Ask which one before you pay. 5

What does the park itself charge in 2026?

One government figure, two operator figures, and a gap this research could not close.

The government's own figure is IDR 250,000 a day for a foreign visitor, flat on weekdays and holidays. Balai Taman Nasional Komodo briefed that price in October 2024, when Government Regulation No. 36/2024 replaced the 2014 tariff on 30 October. The ticket already covers trekking, wildlife-watching and snorkeling. Indonesian citizens pay IDR 50,000 on a weekday and IDR 75,000 on a Sunday or holiday. 4

Operators quote higher, and they agree with each other. Nadia tells guests to bring IDR 650,000 per foreign visitor in cash for a multi-day trip, plus a ranger fee. Komodo Speedboat prints IDR 350,000 for a day tour and IDR 650,000 for a 3-day trip. Two operators with no connection quote the same multi-day figure. Budget that one. 7, 3

The IDR 250,000 and IDR 650,000 figures describe the same ticket and disagree. One reading the operators leave unstated is that a multi-day trip accrues the daily ticket more than once, or that IDR 650,000 bundles the ranger fee. Dollar equivalents at JISDOR IDR 17,917.00 on 25 September 2026. Operators collect this money in cash at the dock, separately from any fare paid online.

Budget the operator figure and read the briefing number as the floor. The park authority's own tariff page did not carry a fee table on 26 September 2026, so this page prints both numbers. Ask your operator in writing what it will collect at the dock. 4

Diving carries its own ticket on top, IDR 25,000 per person per dive activity, kept separate in the briefing because diving needs skills, facilities and special equipment. Diving at park sites also needs a certification card: the park lists uncertified diving among its prohibited acts, which binds a day-trip diver and a liveaboard diver alike. 4, 9

The park is somebody's home water

Komodo National Park has villages inside it. Komodo village sits on Komodo Island's east coast, with Papagarang and Rinca villages on their own islands, all within traditional-settlement zones that predate the park's designation on 6 March 1980. Boat routes on both trip types pass close to those home waters. 5, 6

The island's Indigenous people are the Ata Modo, the Modo people, a name they gave themselves for an island they call Tana Modo; the English label Komodo people was coined by the anthropologist J.A.J. Verheijen in 1989. Village families today also descend from people exiled to the island under colonial rule and from Bugis migrants out of South Sulawesi. Islam is the majority faith, with Christian and Hindu congregations too. 10

The park's zoning is why your boat stops where it stops. Core and wilderness zones take no visitor landing at all. The dive sites, beaches and ranger stations on every itinerary here sit in tourism-use zones, and the fishing grounds around the villages sit in traditional-use zones. Pelagic and research zones account for the rest. 5

  • Anchoring has a floor. Boats may drop anchor in water shallower than 30 metres only where the bottom is 100 percent sand, and anchoring in manta habitat or on manta transit routes is barred outright. That rule shapes where a day-trip speedboat and a liveaboard phinisi can sit at Manta Point. 9
  • Speed near the sites is policed. Running a speedboat or other watercraft fast enough to endanger wildlife or swimmers at a dive or snorkel site is a listed prohibited act. 9
  • The park is roughly 1,733 sq km of islands and sea in its UNESCO listing, about 603 sq km of it land, and one of Indonesia's first five national parks. A second official area figure, 1,817 sq km, circulates alongside it. 5, 6

So which should you book?

The card in your wallet decides more than the budget does. Certification, the number of clear days you hold in Labuan Bajo, and whether South Komodo matters: those three answers pick the boat. The prices below are per person at the operators' September 2026 rates. 1, 2

  • Certified, three days or more, diving is the point: the liveaboard. Nine dives, two nights aboard, full board and Rinca dragons for about IDR 11,225,000 with park tickets. 2, 3
  • Certified, one clear day in town: the day boat. Three dives for IDR 2,750,000, the cheapest dive in the park, and your own hotel bed that night. 1
  • No certification, and the islands are the draw: a snorkeling day at IDR 1,300,000, or a shared speedboat tour with six stops at $120 per person including transfers, lunch, guide and water. 1, 3
  • South Komodo on the wish list: four days, IDR 14,000,000, thirteen dives. Three days keeps you in the north and centre. 2
  • A phinisi, a sunrise and a snorkel mask: Nadia's 3-day open trip from IDR 3,750,000, the cheapest way to sleep in the park. 7

Then price the week around the boat. MMT's Indonesia country guide covers arrival and island choices, the liveaboard against shore diving worksheet compares the two trip shapes anywhere in the world, and the exchange-rate risk worksheet shows what a ten percent move in the rupiah does to a fare you settle in cash on the dock. 8

Frequently asked questions

Is a Komodo liveaboard worth it compared with day trips?

On diving alone, the day boat wins: IDR 916,667 a dive against IDR 1,166,667 on the same operator's 3-day, 2-night trip. Nine dives cost about IDR 9,375,000 as three day trips and about IDR 11,225,000 as one liveaboard, with park tickets in both. The extra IDR 1,850,000 buys two nights aboard, full board, a Rinca dragon trek and dawn starts at the sites. 1, 2, 3

How much is a Komodo day trip by speedboat?

Komodo Speedboat prices a shared full-day speedboat tour with six park stops at $120 per person, including hotel and airport transfer, a lunch box, a guide and water, with the park ticket billed separately. A private speedboat for the day runs about $2,000 for the boat. Shared trips leave at 06:30. 3

How much does a 3 day Komodo boat trip cost?

It depends on whether you dive. Nadia, a phinisi running open trips, charges IDR 3,750,000 per person in a Deluxe Cabin Sea View and IDR 4,250,000 in the Master Cabin for 3 days and 2 nights, with snorkeling. Dive Komodo's Tatawa charges IDR 10,500,000 for the same length of trip with nine guided dives. 7, 2

Can I see Komodo dragons on a day trip?

Yes, if the itinerary names Loh Liang on Komodo Island or Loh Buaya on Rinca Island. Those two ranger stations are the only places wild dragons are trekked. Rinca is 45 to 60 minutes out by speedboat and Komodo Island about two hours, so most single-day loops choose Rinca. Padar has no resident dragons. 5, 6

Do I need a dive certification for Komodo?

For diving, yes. The park authority lists diving without a certification at park dive sites among its prohibited acts, and Dive Komodo's day boat takes certified divers only. Snorkelers are free of that rule, and Discovery Scuba at IDR 3,000,000 puts a beginner in the water with an instructor instead. 9, 1

What is the Komodo National Park entrance fee?

Sources disagree, so carry the higher figure. A park authority briefing in October 2024 set a flat IDR 250,000 per day for foreign visitors under Government Regulation No. 36/2024. Komodo Speedboat quotes IDR 350,000 for a day trip, and it and Nadia both quote IDR 650,000 for a multi-day trip in 2026, in cash at the dock. Diving adds a separate IDR 25,000 ticket. 4, 7, 3

How many days does it take to reach South Komodo?

Four. On Dive Komodo's own tiering, the 4-day, 3-night trip is the first one that lists North, Central and South Komodo, with thirteen dives for IDR 14,000,000. The 3-day trip and every day trip work North and Central water only. The fourth day adds four dives at about IDR 875,000 each. 2, 1

When should I avoid booking a Komodo boat trip?

Komodo Speedboat advises against travel from January to March, citing rainy-season weather and rough seas, and says most schedules in those months are cancelled. Confirm the season with your operator before paying a deposit, and ask what happens to your money if the boat stays in port. 3
