Nyepi in Bali: what the Day of Silence means for your trip

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The 2027 date, the 24 hours the airport stays closed, what the province asks of visitors, and the two nights to book.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March. Indonesia's government gazetted it as Saka new year 1949, and the Balinese calendar maintained at Universitas Udayana lists the same day. 1, 2
  • Ngurah Rai airport closes for a full 24 hours, both directions. In 2026 that grounded 440 scheduled flights, 231 domestic and 209 international, with medical evacuation the only exception. 3
  • Book two nights across the day. Many Bali hotels handle check-in and check-out on every day but Nyepi, and ATMs island-wide are commonly switched off from the day before with the cash taken out. 4
  • The provincial circular names tourists by name, asking everyone to stay off the roads and to leave firecrackers, loudspeakers and bright lights alone for the day. Pecalang and village officials keep it. 5
  • A slip usually costs a warning, community work or about Rp100,000, roughly USD 5.58. The one-year sentence handed to a Swiss visitor in August 2026 followed him filming himself breaking the day and posting it. 4, 6, 7

The day the island stops

For 24 hours, Bali's roads belong to nobody. No scooters in the lanes, no vans on the airport toll road, no planes over Kuta. The effigies paraded by torchlight the night before are ash by breakfast. Across the island, electricity use falls by as much as 60 percent against an ordinary day. 8

This is Nyepi, the Saka new year, kept as a day of silence. The next one is Monday 8 March 2027, the date Indonesia's government set in its 2027 holiday decree. 1 The observance has four parts, named by the communities that keep them: Amati Geni, Amati Karya, Amati Lelungan, Amati Lelanguan. Fire, work, travel and entertainment, all set down together. 8

For a visitor the day is either the best 24 hours of the trip or the one that wrecks the flight home. The difference is knowing what closes, for how long, and what the province asks of you while it does. Nyepi is a national public holiday across Indonesia; the island-wide shutdown is Bali's own, and the Indonesia travel guide covers how the rest of the country runs. 1, 5

When is Nyepi in Bali in 2027?

The government-set date, the new moon it is counted from, and why two calendar sites print a different day.

Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March. Three Indonesian ministries set it together in their joint decree on national holidays for 2027, where it appears as Hari Suci Nyepi, Tahun Baru Saka 1949. 1 Kalender Bali Digital, the Balinese calendar built at Universitas Udayana, lists the same date. 2

The date moves every year because the moon sets it. Nyepi opens the Saka year, an era counted from 78 AD, and lands on Tilem Kesanga, the new moon of the calendar's ninth month. In 2027 that new moon falls on Sunday 7 March. 8, 2

Nyepi's Gregorian date is published by the Indonesian government roughly a year ahead, because each year's date depends on the Saka lunar calendar. The 06:00 to 06:00 window is the one Bali's provincial circular set for 2026; the 2027 circular arrives in the weeks beforehand.

Is the airport closed on Nyepi?

Yes, in both directions, for a full 24 hours. Here is the 2026 window and the traffic it removed.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai shuts for 24 hours, arrivals and departures alike. In 2026 the closure ran from 06:00 WITA on Thursday 19 March to 06:00 the next morning, under AirNav Indonesia's notice to airmen A0096. It grounded 440 scheduled flights, 231 domestic and 209 international, and kept 19 aircraft parked overnight. Medical evacuation and specially approved emergency flights were the only movements. 3

One day of silence takes out a full day of traffic in both directions. The 2025 closure halted 425 flights across 54 airlines, 15 fewer than 2026, so the scale holds from year to year. Source: 3

The gap a passenger feels runs longer than the closure itself. In 2026 the last domestic departure left at 23:10 on 18 March and the first one back took off at 07:00 on 20 March: 31 hours and 50 minutes between planes. On the international side the wait ran from 01:30 to 08:15, 30 hours and 45 minutes. 3

This repeats every year. The same full closure ran for Nyepi 2025, on Saturday 29 March, halting 425 flights across 54 airlines with the same 19 aircraft left overnight. Treat it the way you would treat any public holiday you already know the date of, and build the trip around it. 10, 3

The road to the airport closes as well. PT Jasamarga Bali Tol shut the Bali Mandara toll road, the link between Nusa Dua, the airport and Benoa, from 23:00 on Wednesday 18 March 2026 until 07:00 on Friday 20 March, a window of 32 hours. Ambulances and fire trucks could use it, escorted by pecalang or another authorized agency. 3

What closes across the island, and for how long

The airport reopens first. The parks reopen last. Bali's conservation agency closed four natural parks for three days around Nyepi 2026: Danau Buyan and Danau Tamblingan in Tabanan, Penelokan and Gunung Batur Bukit Payang in Bangli, and Sangeh in Badung. They reopened at 09:00 on Saturday 21 March. A sunrise walk at Batur the morning after Nyepi was off the table. 3

Every window here is 2026's. Bali issues a fresh circular each year and the operators publish their own notices in the weeks beforehand; read those for 2027's exact hours.

Food needs a day of thought in advance. Restaurants and malls close for the day, and hotels serve their own guests a limited menu. Outdoor lighting goes off after dark, and many properties ask guests to close the curtains so the room shows no light from outside. 4

What the rules ask of visitors

Bali's circular names tourists in the same sentence as residents. The 2026 joint circular, issued by the provincial government with the regional police chief, the military resort commander and the ministry of religious affairs' Bali office, asks the whole community and tourists to stay indoors and off the roads, and to leave firecrackers, loudspeakers, noise and excess lighting alone. Everyone in the province, businesses included, carries that obligation, whatever their religion. 5

Keeping the day is the village's work. Desa Adat officials, mosque and prayer-house administrators, Pecalang, Linmas and village staff share the job, coordinating with the police. Pecalang, the customary village security, are the ones you will actually see in the lane. 5

  1. 06:00, the day begins

Transport stops island-wide, broadcasters go off air and carriers switch cellular data off, with emergency communication preserved. Download your maps, tickets and reading the evening before. 5

  2. Through the day

The streets stay empty and Pecalang patrol them. Restaurants, warungs and malls stay shut; hotels feed their own guests from a short menu. Whatever you want to eat or drink, buy it on the 7th. 5, 4

  3. After dark

Outdoor lights stay off and curtains stay closed so no light shows from the road. This is the part visitors remember: a sky over a city with the lights down, and electricity use across Bali as much as 60 percent below an ordinary day. 4, 8

  4. 06:00 the next morning, Ngembak Geni

Transport restarts, the airport reopens, and Balinese families visit each other to ask forgiveness. In 2026 the first domestic flight left at 07:00. 5, 3, 8

Two habits carry over from the rest of the trip. Temples set their own rules year-round, from the sarong and sash at the gate to who may enter on a given day, and MMT's Ubud temples guide has the dress code and the fees. If you work while you travel, the data switch-off makes Nyepi a day off the laptop; the Canggu remote-work guide prices the desks and cafes for the rest of the month. 5

What happens if you break the rules?

Most cases end in a warning, community work or a small customary fine. Someone found outside is picked up by Pecalang and may be asked to do ngayah, community work such as cleaning temple grounds. Village fines commonly sit around Rp100,000. One named customary village, Desa Pakraman Kedewatan, sets a ceiling of Rp1,000,000. 4

Conversions are MMT arithmetic on two sourced inputs: Rp100,000 / 17,917 = USD 5.58 and Rp1,000,000 / 17,917 = USD 55.81, at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate of Rp17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. Each Desa Adat sets its own fine, so the figure varies by village.

One 2026 case went far past that. On 20 August 2026 a Denpasar court sentenced Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a 26-year-old Swiss national, to a year in prison after he left his villa in Legian during Nyepi, filmed himself walking to the beach and posted videos mocking the day with an expletive. Villa staff had told him the rules beforehand. 7

The presiding judge, Tjokorda Putra Budi Pastima, put the reason on the record: "What the defendant did offended the Balinese people, hurt their faith and provoked public outrage." The same wire report notes that earlier cases of tourists going outside were generally settled without prosecution. The filming and the posting made this one different. 7

Melasti, Ogoh-ogoh and the day after

Nyepi sits in the middle of a week of ceremony, and the loudest night of the year is the one right before it. The silence reads differently once you have seen what leads into it.

  1. Melasti, two or three days ahead, carries temple effigies to the sea, a lake or a river for purification, in a village procession dressed in white. 8
  2. Tawur Agung Kesanga, the day before Nyepi, is the large purification ceremony; Denpasar holds its own at the Puputan Badung field. 8
  3. Pengerupukan, that same evening, also called the ngrupuk parade, is when villages parade ogoh-ogoh, sculpted figures of Bhuta Kala standing for negative traits, through the streets by torchlight and then burn them. 8, 9
  4. Nyepi, from 06:00: Amati Geni, Amati Karya, Amati Lelungan, Amati Lelanguan. Fire, work, travel and entertainment set down for 24 hours. 8, 5
  5. Ngembak Geni, the morning after, opens the doors again, and families visit each other to ask forgiveness. 8

For a visitor, the eve is the ticket. The parade is a street event, the effigies go up in flame at the end of it, and the quiet starts a few hours later. Each village sets its own time, so the answer comes from your accommodation and not from an island-wide schedule. 8

How should I plan a trip around Nyepi?

Give the day two nights, and the far end a spare day. Hotels commonly handle check-in and check-out on every day but Nyepi itself, which makes a two-night booking spanning it the simplest fix. With the airport shut for 24 hours and the parks shut for three days in 2026, an arrival on Sunday 7 March 2027 and a departure from Thursday 11 March keeps every moving part clear of a closure. 4, 3, 1

  • Two nights booked across Nyepi, with the property's own rules for the day confirmed in writing. 4
  • Cash drawn two days ahead, in small notes, because the machines go dark from the day before. 4
  • Water, snacks and a charged phone in the room, with offline maps downloaded while the data still runs. 5, 4
  • Flights clear of both 8 and 9 March 2027 until the provincial circular for the year is published. 1, 2
  • Volcano and park days moved off the closure window, which in 2026 ran two days past Nyepi itself. 3
  • The days either side given to something slow and local: a shore-diving base such as Amed prices a quiet week on the east coast.

The silence is the point. A day with no engines is a rare thing to be handed, and it arrives on the island's terms: indoors, unlit, quiet, with the cash already drawn and the flight already moved.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bali Day of Silence on 8 or 9 March 2027?

Monday 8 March 2027, set by the three-ministry decree and matched by Kalender Bali Digital. Keep 9 March clear of flights too until Bali's 2027 circular is out. 1, 2, 9

Can I fly into or out of Bali on Nyepi?

No. I Gusti Ngurah Rai closes in both directions for 24 hours, 06:00 to 06:00 WITA, and only medical evacuation and specially approved emergency flights operate. The 2026 closure grounded 440 scheduled flights and kept 19 aircraft overnight; the 2025 one grounded 425 across 54 airlines. Book your arrival for the day before at the latest. 3, 10

Do the boats and the airport road stop too?

Yes. The provincial circular halts land, sea and air transport operators for the same 24 hours, which takes the fast boats out of Bali with it. The Bali Mandara toll road between Nusa Dua, the airport and Benoa closed for 32 hours in 2026, open only to ambulances and fire trucks under pecalang escort. 5, 3

Will my phone work on Nyepi?

Plan for a day without it. Bali's 2026 circular ordered carriers to switch off cellular data for the 24 hours, with an exception preserved for emergency communication, and put radio and television off air for the same window. Download maps, boarding passes and anything you want to read on the eve. 5

What happens if a tourist goes outside during Nyepi?

Pecalang, the customary village security, pick you up. The usual outcome is a warning, community work such as cleaning temple grounds, or a customary fine that a March 2026 report put at around Rp100,000, roughly USD 5.58, with one named village setting a Rp1,000,000 ceiling. Prosecution is reserved for cases that cause public disturbance. 4, 6

Do the rules apply to visitors who follow another religion?

Yes. Bali's joint circular states that everyone in the province, residents, businesses and tourists alike, must observe it, and it names tourists directly in the clause about staying off the roads and avoiding firecrackers, loudspeakers and bright lights. Enforcement runs through Desa Adat officials, Pecalang, Linmas and village staff with the police. 5

What should I buy the day before Nyepi?

Cash in small notes, drinking water, food you can eat cold, and a full phone charge. ATMs across Bali are commonly switched off from the day before with the cash removed, restaurants and shopping centers close for the day, and hotels serve only their own guests from a limited menu. 4

Is Nyepi a good time to be in Bali?

For a traveler who gives the far end a spare day, it is one of the best. You get the ogoh-ogoh parade on the eve, then a day with the roads empty and electricity use as much as 60 percent below normal. For a tight itinerary it is a trap: the airport shut for 24 hours and four nature parks shut for three days in 2026. 8, 3
