Three operators' own September 2026 prices for the 50 kilometers southeast, what six or eight hours actually hold, and where Palenque's own decisions stand today.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The town sits 50 kilometers southeast of Cartagena, about 90 minutes each way. A booked day spends roughly three of its hours in the car, so read the drive out of the total before you judge the length. 1, 2, 3
  • Prices run from COP 60,000 to COP 792,000 a person across three operators' own booking pages, about USD 18 to USD 240 at Colombia's official rate of COP 3,306.86 to the dollar for 26 to 28 September 2026. The gap is transport and lunch. 2, 3, 4
  • Beyond Colombia's full package undercuts Nomades by COP 61,000 a head, about USD 18, for the same three things: round-trip transport, a guide and lunch. Nomades gives 8 hours to Beyond Colombia's 6. 2, 1, 4
  • Palenque is still a corregimiento of Mahates, while its own residents work through the prior-consultation process that opened on 5 August 2026 and would end with Colombia's 1,104th municipality. 5, 6
  • One operator writes the rule down. Juan Ballena's page calls Palenque a living Afro-Colombian community and asks visitors to request permission before close-up photographs of people. 3

Fifty kilometers southeast of Cartagena

The road out of Cartagena runs southeast for about 50 kilometers and takes roughly 90 minutes. Three operators print the same figures on their own pages. At the end of it is a town in the foothills of the Montes de Maria with a plaza, a school court, and a culture UNESCO put on its Representative List in 2008 after proclaiming it a Masterpiece in 2005. 1, 2, 3, 7

Palenque is a working town of roughly 3,500 people by UNESCO's nomination-era count, with cassava, yam, coconut, plantain, cattle and traditional sweets behind the household economy. It also produced Antonio Cervantes, Kid Pambele, who on 28 October 1972 became Colombia's first world boxing champion and went on to hold the title for seven years. 7, 8, 9

So the day is short, the drive is long, and the interesting part is what happens in the middle. Here is the shape of it, from the three operators' printed itineraries.

  1. Pickup in Cartagena, around 08:00

Nomades collects from accommodation in the urban area and runs 08:00 to 16:00, with a two-person minimum and free cancellation up to 48 hours out. 1

  2. About 90 minutes on the road

Roughly 50 kilometers, longer in traffic. Nomades, Beyond Colombia and Juan Ballena all say so on their own pages. 1, 2, 3

  3. The circuit through town

Beyond Colombia's printed itinerary names the main square, the Palenque letters, the Casa de la Musica, the hospital and a traditional bareque house. Nomades names the cultural center and Plaza Benkos Bioho. 2, 1

  4. Lunch in Palenque

Two of the three include a local lunch in the fee. Juan Ballena leaves about an hour for you to buy your own in town. 2, 1, 3

  5. Back on the road by mid-afternoon

Subtract the driving and the day gets honest. An 8-hour tour with 1.5 hours each way leaves about 5 hours on the ground; a 6-hour one leaves about 3. 1, 2

How much does a San Basilio de Palenque tour cost?

Three named operators, read from their own booking pages on 28 September 2026. Pesos first; dollars at Colombia's official rate for the same week.

The spread is COP 60,000 to COP 792,000 a person, and almost all of it is the car. A guide in town costs COP 60,000. Add lunch and it is COP 110,000. Add a round trip from Cartagena and the same operator asks COP 232,000. The private-car product is more than three times that. 2, 3

Beyond Colombia and Nomades list per person. Juan Ballena shows 792,000 as a regular price on a selector for 2 to 5 people, while the same page's Important Information section states the price is per person; both readings appear below. Converted at COP 3,306.86 per USD 1, Colombia's official rate for 26 to 28 September 2026, rounded to the dollar. Nomades and Juan Ballena each set a two-person minimum. Beyond Colombia prints its tourism registry number, RNT 49047; Juan Ballena prints register 43464. 4, 3, 2, 1

The top bar is the one to read twice. Juan Ballena lists 792,000 on a selector for 2 to 5 people and states elsewhere on the same page that the price is per person, so a booking for two reads as either 396,000 each or 792,000 each. Source: 2, 1, 3

Two operators sell the identical bundle, and COP 61,000 separates them. Transport, a guide and lunch costs COP 232,000 with Beyond Colombia and COP 293,000 with Nomades, a gap of about USD 18 a head. Nomades buys you two more hours and a stated 48-hour cancellation window. Beyond Colombia's window is 24 hours. 2, 1, 4

Which option should you book?

Decide the transport first, because that is the decision the price is really about. Everything else on these three pages is close to identical: a walk through town, a local guide, a plate of lunch.

  • Arranging your own ride? Beyond Colombia's guide-only option is COP 60,000 and its guide-plus-lunch option is COP 110,000, both starting in Palenque at 10:30. Those are the cheapest published figures in this comparison by a wide margin. 2
  • Want one price for the whole day? Beyond Colombia asks COP 232,000 and Nomades asks COP 293,000, each with round-trip transport, a guide and lunch. Six hours against eight. 2, 1
  • Two of you, set on a private car? Juan Ballena lists COP 792,000. Read as a booking price that is COP 396,000 each; read as a per-person price it is COP 792,000 each. Get the answer in writing before you pay. 3

Beyond Colombia adds a line worth quoting back at anyone who sells you something else. Its page promises it will avoid places where sudden extra charges apply, and it asks visitors to keep valuables out of sight, in the Colombian phrase, to avoid giving papaya. 2

Where the money lands in Palenque

All three products put a local guide and a plate of food inside the fee, which is the part of the price that stays in town. Juan Ballena names a Palenquero community guide. Nomades names a local Spanish- or English-speaking guide and lunch at a Palenque restaurant. Beyond Colombia includes a local lunch on two of its three options. 3, 1, 2

That money arrives in a town that holds its own land title. On 19 October 2023, after a 15-year process, Colombia's Agencia Nacional de Tierras registered collective title to 3,218 hectares for the 1,500 families of the Consejo Comunitario de Ma Kankamana de San Basilio de Palenque. The title is inalienable, unseizable and not subject to prescription. 8

The land agency's own description of the territory lists cassava, yam, coconut, plantain, traditional sweets and cattle. A tour fee lands beside that, alongside a farm economy rather than on top of an empty one. The Consejo Comunitario is also the body that speaks for the town in the municipality process below. 8, 5

One number stays off this page. None of the three operators publishes how the fee splits between the driver, the guide, the cook and the town, so ask when you book. A question about the split is a reasonable question, and the answer tells you most of what you want to know about an operator.

What is the first free town in the Americas?

It is what Colombia calls Palenque, and what Palenque calls itself. El Universal used the phrase primer pueblo libre de America in its report on the August 2026 meeting in the town. Fontur, the national tourism fund, uses First Free People of America on its own festival calendar. 5, 10

The history behind it: in 1599 about 30 enslaved people escaped into the forest under Captain Benkos Bioho, and defeated the first armed expedition sent after them. Palenque dates its founding to 1603, the year carved on the Bioho statue in the main plaza. Bioho was captured and hanged by the Spanish in 1621. 11

Two documents carry the title. A Royal Decree of 1691 offered freedom in exchange for taking in no further runaways. In January 1713 the settlement, by then 137 homes, was renamed San Basilio Magno under an agreement signed with Bishop Antonio Maria Casiani. Palenqueros went on sheltering people who escaped anyway. 11

The phrase rests on two acts: the Royal Decree of 1691 and the January 1713 agreement. Colombia and Palenque both use it; no single legal instrument carries it.

Palenque is asking to become its own municipality

A law in 2024, a vote called off in 2025, a prior-consultation process reopened in 2026. This is the town's decision to make, and it is still being made.

Two years after the law passed, Palenque remains a corregimiento of Mahates. The process is live, it is slow, and it has moved because the Palenquero community insisted on the order of the steps. Here is the sequence.

How the municipality question has moved since 2024 6, 12, 5
DateWhat happened
Late July 2024 (reported 24-25 July; the law's official gazette date could not be confirmed)President Gustavo Petro signs the law amending Article 16 of Law 617 of 2000, opening the way for Palenque to become Bolivar's 47th municipality and Colombia's 1,104th.
February 2025The Tribunal Administrativo de Bolivar authorizes a popular vote on the question.
30 November 2025The vote is suspended by decree the day before it is due, after the Ministry of the Interior confirms that a prior consultation with the ethnic community comes first.
5 August 2026The Preconsulta y Apertura stage opens at the Casa de la Cultura in San Basilio de Palenque with more than 200 community leaders present.
28 September 2026The prior-consultation process continues. Palenque remains a corregimiento of Mahates.

Dates as reported by El Colombiano, El Heraldo and El Universal. The law's own text is not readable online, so this table follows the newspapers' reporting of it. 6, 12, 5

Bolivar's governor, Yamil Arana, framed the 2024 law in money: Palenqueros would gain the autonomy to decide how their transfers and revenues are spent, which he called libertad financiera y autonomia territorial, financial freedom and territorial autonomy. 6

In the Casa de la Cultura on 5 August 2026, Keinel Joel Cimarra Cassiani, representative of the Consejo Comunitario Makankamana and national prior-consultation delegate, told El Universal the community sees una luz al final del sendero, a light at the end of the path. Manuel Caceres Reyes, who heads the Comite Promunicipio, said Palenqueros are now called on to set out the positive and negative effects of becoming a municipality. 5

For a visitor this is context, and it changes one thing on the page: the address. Until the ordinance is finished, Palenque's postal and administrative home is Mahates, Bolivar. 5

Will I hear Palenquero spoken in town?

Some of it, from some people, and that is the honest answer. UNESCO describes Palenquero as the only creole language in Latin America with a lexical Spanish base and grammatical features of Bantu languages. It is the center of the listing, more than any building in town. 7

The counts put a size on it. Of 7,730 counted Palenquero speakers aged 2 and over, a count of the language's speakers everywhere and not of this town alone, 18 per cent speak the language well and 24.3 per cent speak it a little, on figures attributed to Colombia's Ministry of Culture. Eighteen per cent of 7,730 is about 1,391 people in full command. 13

The language is also taught: the town's own Festival de Tambores runs a Palenque-language workshop beside its percussion, dance and hairstyle classes, and the language is what UNESCO's listing was built to protect. 10, 7

UNESCO's text also describes the social structure a guide will explain in the first ten minutes: family networks and age-based groups called ma kuagro, which carry rights, duties and obligations among their members, alongside musical forms tied to baptisms, weddings and religious festivities. 7

You will meet the culture in Cartagena before you meet it in Palenque. Palenquera fruit vendors work the plazas of the old city, and the Festival de Tambores this year pays tribute to la mujer palenquera. 14

What should you know before you book?

Five practical lines, then the trip planning. Everything here is dated, because every one of these changes on its own schedule.

  • Colombia's emergency number is 123, the single national line for medical, police and fire dispatch, used the same way in Bolivar as everywhere else. 15
  • The US advisory sets Colombia at Level 3, reconsider travel, in its 31 March 2026 edition. Bolivar, which holds both Cartagena and Mahates, sits outside the four departments marked Do Not Travel. 16
  • Visa-free entry runs 90 days at the immigration officer's discretion, extendable by up to 120 more, capped at 180 days in any 12-month period. Check-Mig, the online arrival form, is free and optional. 17
  • Budget at COP 3,306.86 to the US dollar, Colombia's official rate for 26 to 28 September 2026. Every dollar figure on this page uses it. 4
  • The Festival de Tambores falls in mid-October, with workshops in percussion, dance, hairstyles and the Palenque language. Dates below. 10
  • Fit the day into the wider route. Palenque slots into a Cartagena stop on one month in Colombia, and the rest of MMT's Colombia guides cover the cities either side of it.
  • Moving between cities or staying to work? Domestic flights in Colombia prices the fares and bag rules, and the remote-work travel budget prices the desk and the data.

One route this page leaves open. No operator we read publishes a public-bus or shared-car fare for the run from Cartagena. If you go that way, Beyond Colombia's guide-only option starts in Palenque at 10:30, not from a Cartagena pickup. 2

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Palenque Colombia day trip from Cartagena?

Five to eight hours door to door, with about three of those in the car. Nomades runs 08:00 to 16:00 for 8 hours. Beyond Colombia's options run 6 hours. Juan Ballena's private tour is about 5 hours, of which 90 minutes goes each way on the road. 1, 2, 3

What is the cheapest way to visit San Basilio de Palenque?

The cheapest published figure in this comparison is Beyond Colombia's guide-only option at COP 60,000 a person, about USD 18, which starts in Palenque at 10:30 and leaves your transport to you. Guide plus lunch is COP 110,000. 2, 4

Can I get to Palenque without booking a tour?

No operator we read publishes a public-bus or shared-car fare for the route, so this page prices only booked products. A guide in town is bookable on its own at COP 60,000, which is the part worth paying for either way. 2

Is San Basilio de Palenque safe to visit?

The US advisory places Colombia at Level 3, reconsider travel, in its 31 March 2026 edition, and lists four Do Not Travel departments: Arauca, Cauca outside Popayan, Valle del Cauca outside Cali, and Norte de Santander. Bolivar, which holds Cartagena and Mahates, is outside that list. Colombia's emergency number is 123. 16, 15

Is Palenque its own municipality yet?

As of 28 September 2026 it remains a corregimiento of Mahates, Bolivar. A 2024 law opened the path, a popular vote set for 30 November 2025 was suspended so that a prior consultation with the community could happen first, and that consultation process opened on 5 August 2026. 6, 12, 5

What language do people speak in San Basilio de Palenque?

Spanish, and Palenquero, which UNESCO describes as the only creole language in Latin America with a lexical Spanish base and Bantu grammatical features. Of 7,730 counted speakers aged 2 and over, 18 per cent speak it well, on figures attributed to Colombia's Ministry of Culture. 7, 13

Who was Benkos Bioho?

The captain who led about 30 enslaved people out of Cartagena into the forest in 1599 and defeated the first expedition sent after them. Palenque dates its founding to 1603 and keeps his statue in the main plaza. The Spanish captured and hanged him in 1621. 11

When is the Festival de Tambores in Palenque?

Mid-October, every year. Fontur's national calendar dates the festival to 11 October and describes workshops in percussion, dance, hairstyles and the Palenque language. A Cartagena listings page gives 11 to 14 October 2026 for the 39th edition, with a tribute to la mujer palenquera. Confirm the dates with the organizer. 10, 14
