Socorro liveaboard: giant mantas and what the trip costs

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

September 2026 prices from both operators' own pages and Mexico's own park fee, with one named 9-day sailing priced line by line to about USD 5,029.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The park fee is the line that surprises people. Mexico's protected-areas agency charges 3,760 pesos per person, per day to dive Revillagigedo National Park, about USD 218 at the Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026. Five dive days come to roughly USD 1,090 on top of the fare. 1, 2
  • Fares start at USD 3,195. Nautilus lists its Socorro trips from USD 3,195 to USD 9,790 across 9 to 13 days and three boats. Mexico Liveaboards charges a flat USD 4,195 for a 10-day trip on Rocio del Mar or Quino del Mar in 2026. 3, 4
  • Price the whole trip and one diver lands near USD 5,029. Fare, five days of park fees, the USD 35 cash port fee and a 15 percent gratuity, before flights, gear, nitrox, wifi or insurance. 3, 1, 2
  • Experience rules split by operator. Mexico Liveaboards asks for Open Water certification and strongly recommends 50 logged dives. Nautilus sets no fixed minimum and warns that several dives suit higher-experience divers. Choose the boat on that line before price. 5, 3
  • The season depends on whose page you read. The park regulator prints November to June, Mexico Liveaboards sails November to May, Nautilus runs November to July. Book around the animal you want and the operator's own calendar. 1, 4, 3

The trip you are actually buying

Roughly 240 miles of open Pacific sit between Cabo San Lucas and the first mooring. You board, sleep through a day and a night of open water, and come up on deck to a volcanic cone with empty horizon all around it. Nautilus puts that crossing at about 24 hours each way. It is the price of admission to Revillagigedo, and it is why nobody day-trips here. 3

Then the diving starts. Giant oceanic mantas come to the divers at the cleaning stations, wingspans up to 7 meters wide, and Nautilus counts up to 12 shark species on the same reefs: scalloped hammerheads, Galapagos, silvertip, silky and more. That is the trip people save for. 3

This page prices it from the operators' own rate pages and Mexico's own fee schedule, read on 25 September 2026. The fares, the park fee, the extras each boat leaves out, the experience each one asks for, the season each one sails. Where two sources disagree, both figures appear here and in the confirm box at the end.

How much does a Socorro liveaboard cost?

Two operator families publish prices for this route. Every figure below comes from their own pages on 25 September 2026.

Published fares run from USD 3,195 to USD 9,790, and the spread is mostly trip length and cabin grade. Nautilus sails three boats on 9 to 13 day itineraries. Mexico Liveaboards runs one fixed 10-day itinerary at one price for both of its vessels, quoted on double occupancy. 3, 4

Nautilus prices are the lowest cabin category shown on each sailing in its live departure table; one space remained on the May 2027 UnderSea and the New Year Belle Amie departures at the time of reading. Mexico Liveaboards quotes double occupancy. Availability and price move.

The headline gap between the two is smaller than it looks, because the boats bundle different things. Mexico Liveaboards folds taxes, port fees, beer and wine into its fare. Nautilus keeps the port fee separate and takes it in cash on board. Read the inclusion list before the price. 3, 4

  • Outside a Nautilus fare: gear rental, nitrox, alcohol, the gift shop, internet at USD 80 per device per trip, a USD 35 per-person port fee in cash on board, crew gratuities, mandatory medical and evacuation insurance, and the park fees. 3
  • Outside a Mexico Liveaboards fare: the park fee, nitrox at USD 140 per person for the trip, transfers, and a crew gratuity the operator puts at 10 to 15 percent of the full fare. Wifi is USD 50 per device. 4, 5
  • Optional on Mexico Liveaboards: a nitrox certification course at USD 200 per person, and a private divemaster at USD 75 a day, which comes to USD 750 over the 10-day trip. 5

What is the Revillagigedo park fee?

Mexico charges 3,760 pesos per person, per day, to dive Revillagigedo National Park. CONANP, the federal protected-areas agency, posts that rate on the park's own page for a scuba season running November to June. Diving is allowed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. At the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of 17.2454 pesos to the dollar on 18 September 2026, a single dive day costs about USD 218. 1, 2

5 days, the Nautilus 9-day itinerary18,8001,090
6 days, the Mexico Liveaboards 10-day itinerary22,5601,308

CONANP charges per person, per day, as a collection of rights. Senior citizens, pensioners, retired people, people with disabilities and children under 12 are exempt; students and teachers with a valid credential pay half. Dollar columns are MMT arithmetic on the peso rate at 17.2454 pesos per dollar: 3,760 divided by 17.2454 is 218.03, and 3,760 times 5 divided by 17.2454 is 1,090.15.

Put that beside the cabin price and the shape of the trip changes. On a USD 3,395 fare, five days of park fees add about 32 percent. It lands per person, so a couple pays it twice, and it lands per dive day, so the longer itinerary costs more in fees as well as in fare. MMT's marine park and conservation fees page tracks the same line in other countries. 1, 2, 3

What does a full Socorro trip cost?

Two named sailings priced line by line, from each operator's own rates and Mexico's own fee. Flights, gear and insurance sit on top.

One diver on the 23 to 31 May 2027 Nautilus UnderSea sailing: about USD 5,029 before the flight. Fare of USD 3,395, five dive days of park fees at about USD 1,090, the USD 35 cash port fee, and a 15 percent gratuity of USD 509. The same arithmetic on a 2026 Rocio del Mar or Quino del Mar trip comes to about USD 6,272. 3, 4, 1, 2

Flights, transfers where charged, gear rental, wifi and the mandatory dive and evacuation insurance sit on top. The gratuity follows Mexico Liveaboards' own guidance of 10 to 15 percent of the full fare, applied here at 15 percent to both boats.

The two fares sit USD 800 apart. Add park fees, gratuity and each boat's own extras and the gap widens to about USD 1,243, because the longer trip carries a sixth day of park fee (USD 218), nitrox the other boat does not price (USD 140) and a gratuity USD 120 larger, less the USD 35 port fee Nautilus takes in cash. The Nautilus total carries no nitrox line, because Nautilus publishes no nitrox price; a diver who wants nitrox should expect that gap to close. Source: 3, 4, 1, 2

Set that beside a week of shore diving and the arithmetic changes shape. MMT's liveaboard against shore diving worksheet runs that comparison, and the Cozumel diving budget prices the cheaper Mexican trip most divers weigh Socorro against.

When is the Socorro season?

Three sources give three seasons, and each one is right on its own terms. CONANP sets the park's scuba season at November to June. Mexico Liveaboards sails November to May. Nautilus runs November to July. One is a regulator's window; the other two are operators' calendars. 1, 4, 3

All three figures were read on the operators' and the agency's own pages on the same day. CONANP allows diving between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Book the sailing date against the operator's own calendar.

Then pick the month for the animal. Giant mantas are the constant, and the whales and whale sharks move. The two operators publish windows that differ by a few weeks, so the table below carries both. 3, 4

Both sets of windows come from the operators' current pages. If one animal decides your trip, book the middle of the overlap and ask the operator what it saw on that week last season.

How much diving experience do you need?

The two operators answer this differently, and it is the better reason to choose a boat. Mexico Liveaboards requires Open Water certification and strongly recommends at least 50 logged dives, saying the diving here is physically demanding and its divemasters guide experienced divers. Nautilus says all are welcome, sets no fixed minimum, and warns that several dives suit higher-experience divers. Both check your certification card at boarding. 5, 3

Nautilus states it holds a certified ISM safety management system audited annually to cruise-ship standards. The UnderSea includes one ADA-compatible cabin. Quino del Mar's ten private ensuite staterooms take two people each.

  • The smallest boat here takes 19 guests. Nautilus UnderSea is 105 feet with 9 ensuite staterooms and suites, one of them ADA-compatible. 3
  • The largest takes 32. Nautilus Belle Amie is 147 feet with 17 ensuite cabins; the Explorer sits between them at 132 feet and 25 guests in 13 cabins. 3
  • Quino del Mar was built for divers in 2025. 118 feet, 20 divers, 10 private ensuite staterooms, Coast Guard approved, with Rocio del Mar as its sister vessel. 6

Getting there: the crossing and the days on board

The crossing eats a day in each direction, and the sources disagree on how long it takes. Nautilus puts the archipelago roughly 240 miles off Cabo San Lucas, about 24 hours away. Mexico Liveaboards says 250 miles and 26 to 28 hours one way from San Jose del Cabo. CONANP's own page gives 471 km, about 293 miles, and 36 hours. Plan a full day at sea each way and treat the government figure as the outer edge. 3, 4, 1

With less time: With less time, Nautilus's 9-day, 8-night itinerary buys 5 dive days instead of 6, with up to 4 dives a day. That is one fewer day of park fee, about USD 218 per person. 3, 1, 2

Six dive days across ten days away is the shape of this trip. Four days of the ten are sea days and travel. Price the trip per dive day and the long crossing shows up in the number; price it per week off work and the two operators look much closer together. 4, 3

What should you settle before you pay the deposit?

Insurance is mandatory on both boats, and the reason carries a number. Nautilus states there is a 5,000-foot Navy airstrip on Socorro Island, that a single medevac flight costs a minimum of USD 10,000, and that a diver without adequate cover arranges pre-payment before the flight leaves. There is a Navy recompression chamber on the island and civilian chambers back in Cabo San Lucas. 3

  1. Confirm the sailing and the cabin grade in writing

Nautilus's live table showed one space left on both the May 2027 UnderSea sailing and the New Year Belle Amie departure at the time of reading, and its from prices are the lowest cabin category on that date. Get the cabin you are buying named on the invoice. 3

  2. Ask for the park fee in the currency the boat collects

CONANP posts 3,760 pesos per person, per day. Ask your operator what it charges on board, in which currency and for how many days, and hold the answer in writing before you pay. 1

  3. Buy dive and evacuation cover, then read the wording

Both operators require it and no primary page prices it. MMT's scuba insurance costs page covers what a policy needs to say about chamber treatment and evacuation. 3

  4. Check the passport and the FMM

Every guest needs a passport valid six months from entry, and every non-Mexican guest needs an FMM tourist form, reported at 983 pesos for 2026, about USD 57 at the 18 September 2026 rate. Guests flying in fill the card out on the plane and have it stamped on arrival. 3, 7, 2

  5. Carry cash for the port fee and the tips

Nautilus takes its USD 35 port fee in cash on board. Mexico Liveaboards puts the tipping norm at 10 to 15 percent of the full fare, worked out on the rack rate even when you booked a discount. 3, 5

Socorro is one of several Mexican dive trips worth pricing side by side. Start with MMT's scuba diving in Mexico guide, then the Mexico country guide for the arrival, the money and the rest of the country.

Frequently asked questions

Does the fare include the Revillagigedo park fee?

Ask your operator to put its own park-fee figure in writing, in the currency it actually collects, before you pay: neither prints a dollar amount on its own page. CONANP's peso rate is the anchor, 3,760 pesos per person, per day, about USD 218 at the 18 September 2026 rate, so five dive days add roughly USD 1,090 and six add roughly USD 1,308. 3, 4, 1, 2

How much should I tip the crew on a Socorro liveaboard?

The trap is the base the tip is worked out on. Mexico Liveaboards figures it on the full, undiscounted fare, so a discounted booking still tips at the rack rate. That is 10 to 15 percent, USD 629 at 15 percent on the 2026 fare of USD 4,195. Budget the same range on Nautilus, which lists gratuities outside its fare without printing a norm. 5, 3

What does nitrox cost on a Socorro trip?

Nautilus is the operator to watch: it lists nitrox as excluded but publishes no price for it anywhere, so budget it as an unknown rather than a zero. Mexico Liveaboards does price it, at USD 140 per person for the whole trip (USD 200 for the certification course if you need one), and a private divemaster runs USD 75 a day, USD 750 over the 10-day trip. 5, 3

When do humpback whales and whale sharks pass Socorro?

Both operators agree on one stretch: mid-February to mid-April sits inside every season window on this page for humpbacks, and it also touches Nautilus's April bait-ball season and the tail of its late-April-to-June whale-shark window. Outside that overlap the two operators give different months for each animal; the wildlife table above carries the full spread. 3, 4

Can an Open Water diver book Socorro?

Log dives in current before you book. Neither operator sets a hard checkpoint beyond the certification card at boarding: Mexico Liveaboards recommends 50 logged dives because the diving is physically demanding, and Nautilus warns some sites suit only higher-experience divers rather than turning anyone away outright. 5, 3

Is there wifi on board?

Both boats sell it. Nautilus charges USD 80 per device per trip. Mexico Liveaboards charges USD 50 per device and says the signal works within a 10-mile radius of an island, so the open-ocean crossing stays offline in each direction. 3, 5

What happens if a diver needs a recompression chamber?

Your policy needs to name emergency evacuation and chamber treatment, not just trip cancellation. Neither of Socorro's two chambers (Navy, on the island; civilian, in Cabo San Lucas) covers the flight itself, and that flight alone runs at least USD 10,000 from the island's 5,000-foot Navy airstrip. MMT's scuba insurance costs page covers what the wording needs to say. 3

What paperwork do I need for Mexico?

The FMM card is issued in the air and on arrival, not booked ahead: guests flying in fill it out on the plane and get it stamped by Mexican immigration at the airport. Add a passport valid six months from entry. The 2026 FMM fee is reported at 983 pesos, about USD 57 at the 18 September 2026 rate, by a secondary source; Mexico's own immigration tariff page could not be read on 25 September 2026. 3, 7, 2
