This page compares lift access only. Lodging, travel, rental gear and food sit in the season budget linked below, and a pass changes those too.
Which ticket would you actually buy instead?
One mountain, one Friday in November, three published prices. All read on 13 September 2026.
Vail Mountain sells the same November day at three prices. For Friday 13 November 2026, its own booking tool shows $202 for an adult day ticket bought ahead and $239 on the day, a gap of $37. A restricted Epic 1-Day Pass for an adult is $144. 9
That spread is the whole of pass arithmetic. A break-even figure is a fraction, and the denominator is whichever ticket you would hand over a card for. Against the $239 walk-up price, the $849 Epic Local Pass clears in 3.55 days. Against the $202 ticket bought ahead, it takes 4.20 days, and against the $144 Epic 1-Day Pass, 5.90. Same pass, same Friday, 2.35 days apart, and nothing changed but the ticket you pictured yourself buying. 7, 9
| What you buy | Price, USD | What it ties you to |
|---|---|---|
| Epic 1-Day Pass, restricted | 144 | Sold for a limited window; excluded on the restricted peak dates |
| Day ticket for 13 November 2026, bought ahead | 202 | One named date, chosen at booking |
| The same ticket bought on the day | 239 | Nothing, beyond the $37 it costs you |
Vail prices the $202 and $239 pair for a 13 November 2026 ski day; other dates carry other prices. The same page prints $335 for an adult 1-Day Lift Ticket bought seven days ahead and sets it against its Peak Window Price; for this Friday, the advance price is the $202 above. Vail advises booking four or more weeks ahead to save, with 11 December 2026 the first ski day that saving covers, and says daily lift tickets are limited and popular days sell out. Tickets are refundable if the request arrives by 5 p.m. on the expiry date.
So the list of days comes before the price list. A pass can be good at one resort and blocked at another on the same Saturday, and what a ski season actually costs turns on which of those days survive.
How should I calculate my break-even point?
Aspen Snowmass publishes a seven-day ticket. The full Ikon Pass caps Aspen at seven days. Compare those two.
Run the quick sum first, then watch it fall apart. The full Ikon Pass is $1,449 and Aspen Snowmass's base adult day rate is $189. Divide and you get 7.67 days, so the pass looks like a win on the eighth day at that resort. 1, 2
Aspen's own ticket table breaks it. Seven days booked 30 or more days ahead is $994, which works out at $142.00 a day. The same seven days on the pass cost $1,449, or $455 more. The arithmetic was fine. The denominator was wrong. 2, 1
| How you buy the seven days | Total, USD | Per day, USD | What else it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seven single days at the base rate | 1,323 | 189.00 | Aspen Snowmass's four mountains |
| 7-day ticket booked 7 or more days ahead | 1,057 | 151.00 | The four mountains, inside a 10-day window |
| 7-day ticket booked 30 or more days ahead | 994 | 142.00 | The four mountains, inside a 10-day window |
| Full Ikon Pass | 1,449 | 207.00 | 18 unlimited destinations, plus up to 7 days each at select destinations |
Adult rate, ages 18 to 64. A 7-day Aspen ticket runs inside a 10-day window from the start date chosen at booking. The full Ikon Pass caps Aspen Snowmass at 7 days, so an eighth day there is a separate purchase. Aspen's page says its advance savings depend on purchase date and ticket duration and are not guaranteed. Child, teen and senior rates sit behind a selector.
Table view: Seven adult days at Aspen Snowmass, four ways to pay
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Full Ikon Pass, over its seven Aspen days | $207 |
| Seven single days at the base rate | $189 |
| 7-day ticket, booked 7+ days ahead | $151 |
| 7-day ticket, booked 30+ days ahead | $142 |
Four prices for the same seven days at one resort. The cheapest per-day figure comes from booking a month ahead, and the pass is the dearest of the four on those days alone. Source: 1, 2
Write the season down first
Confirmed trips, likely local days, wishful ones. A mountain and a date beside each.
Price the tickets you would really buy
Multi-day rates and advance rates. Short-session products where the resort sells one. Aspen's seven-day early rate is $994 against $1,323 for seven singles. 2
Add the days the pass leaves out
Blacked-out days, and days past an allocation. Add the days a reservation system keeps you off the lift. Each carries a ticket price, and it belongs on the pass side of the sum.
Compare the two totals, then turn the gap into days
The day threshold is the output. Start with a day threshold and you have chosen the answer before the question.
The same method prices any adventure pass. MMT runs it for park entry in national park passes: calculate your break-even by visitor category. The products differ. The arithmetic holds.
How do limited allocations affect your break-even?
A row that reads seven days can mean seven days spread across six resorts. Read whose bank it draws on.
Alta states it in one line. Its own page says the Ikon Pass provides seven days of skiing between Alta and Snowbird, and that the Ikon Base Pass is invalid at Alta. Two mountains, one bank of seven. Count them as two sevens and the season plan is short by a week of skiing. 3
Epic runs the same structure on its own map. The full Epic Pass carries seven total days at Telluride and seven shared across six Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, with half-price tickets once those are spent. Japan works the other way: five consecutive days at Hakuba Valley's ten resorts and five at Rusutsu draw on separate banks. 4
| Pass | Destination or group | Days included | What happens after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ikon Pass, full | Alta and Snowbird together | 7 shared | Alta sells a friend 25% off at the window; your own days are spent |
| Ikon Pass, full | Aspen Snowmass, four mountains | 7 | Buy a ticket at the resort's own rate |
| Ikon Base Pass | Aspen Snowmass | Snowmass mountain only | Aspen Mountain, Highlands and Buttermilk each need a ticket |
| Ikon Base Pass | Alta | Excluded | Full ticket price |
| Ikon Session Pass | Aspen Snowmass | 5 on the comparison table | Session sells 2, 3 or 4 total days across all its destinations |
| Epic Pass | Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, six resorts | 7 shared | 50% off additional lift tickets |
| Epic Pass | Telluride | 7 | 50% off additional tickets; a physical pass card is required |
| Epic Local Pass | Vail, Beaver Creek and Whistler Blackcomb together | 10 shared | Peak dates excluded; an Advanced Lift Ticket Rate is offered |
Ikon's comparison table prints 5 days for Aspen Snowmass on the Session Pass while the Session Pass's own page sells 2, 3 or 4 total days; the smaller cap governs. The Alta and Snowbird figure comes from Alta's own page. Epic's Hakuba Valley and Rusutsu allocations are 5 consecutive days each and draw on separate banks.

What happens with date restrictions and blackouts?
Three operators, three different holiday rules, and a price for every day the pass leaves out.
A blacked-out day is a ticket you still buy. Big Sky lets Blue, Twin Tips and Freestyle passholders buy their own blackout days at $89 for an adult from 25 November to 18 December 2026 and through April, and at $199 from 20 December to 31 March. A blackout day's price swings by $110 with the month. 5
Table view: A Big Sky blackout day at three age tiers, shoulder season against peak season
| Item | Shoulder season (USD) | Peak season (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | $89 | $199 |
| Senior, 69 and over | $69 | $159 |
| Junior, 14 and under | $59 | $129 |
Three age tiers at one resort. For every blackout day you plan to ski, put the matching figure on the pass side of your sum: peak from 20 December to 31 March, shoulder outside it. Big Sky's own table skips 19 December 2026, so ask the resort what that day costs before you count it. Source: 5
| Product | Days it leaves out | What the operator offers instead |
|---|---|---|
| Ikon Pass, full | None on its core access | Lift reservations required at named destinations |
| Ikon Base Pass | 26 to 30 Dec 2026; 16 to 17 Jan 2027; 13 to 14 Feb 2027 | Full ticket price on those days |
| Ikon Bonus Mountains, every tier | The same three windows, at all 11 bonus mountains | 2 free days each outside those windows |
| Epic Pass, full | None | Unlimited at its named resorts, peak dates included |
| Epic Local Pass | 27 to 28 Nov 2026; 26 to 31 Dec 2026; 16 Jan 2027; 13 to 14 Feb 2027 | Half-price tickets at Park City, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Stowe; an Advanced Lift Ticket Rate at Vail, Beaver Creek and Whistler Blackcomb |
| Epic Day Pass, restricted versions | The same four windows, at every resort and at Telluride and the Canadian Rockies | Full ticket price on those days |
| Big Sky Adult Blue Pass | Saturdays all season; 26 to 30 Dec 2026; 16 to 17 Jan 2027; 13 to 14 Feb 2027 | Passholder tickets at $89 or $199 for an adult, by season |
Verbier 4 Vallées restricts Epic Local Pass holders from 6 to 20 February 2027, a longer window than the standard February dates and only at that resort. Big Sky's three holiday windows match the Ikon Base Pass's three.
Then check whether you can get on the lift at all. Ikon's shop pages say lift reservations are required at named destinations on all three tiers. Vail Resorts' own terms of sale describe a reservation system as something it may implement, with those rules starting on the day it announces one. Two big passes, two different answers. 1, 8, 13, 15
Access rules live in the parking lot too. Alta requires a parking reservation Friday to Sunday and through holiday periods, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. An Ikon passholder pays $25 for one, rides the UTA Ski Bus free, or arrives after 1 p.m. Week-of reservations release each Sunday at 3 p.m. Mountain time and begin on 11 December 2026. 3
How many days do you actually plan to ski?
Big Sky publishes both halves of the sum. Run the season at four day counts and read the worst one.
Big Sky's Adult Blue Pass is $1,120 and its cheapest current adult day ticket is $84, so the line sits at 13.33 days. Fourteen days and the pass is ahead by $56. Ten days and it is $280 behind. The figure that decides this is your own calendar, and calendars written in September flatter their authors. 5, 6
| Days on snow | Day tickets at $84, USD | Adult Blue Pass, USD | Pass minus tickets, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4, the most an Ikon Session Pass allows | 336 | 1,120 | +784 |
| 10, the length of Alta's Powder Card | 840 | 1,120 | +280 |
| 14, the first whole day past Big Sky's line | 1,176 | 1,120 | -56 |
| 20, the length of Bansko Ski's Bansko Twenty pass | 1,680 | 1,120 | -560 |
A plus figure means the pass costs that much more than the tickets. The $84 is Big Sky's current lowest adult price, ages 15 to 69, and it rises closer to the date. The Blue Pass is blacked out every Saturday, so a weekend skier adds the passholder ticket price on top of the pass.
Run the season three times before you pay. The trips already booked. The season you expect. The season that needs everything to go right. Big Sky runs daily from 25 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, plus bonus weekends on 16 to 18 and 23 to 25 April, conditions permitting. A season that long makes almost any plan look reasonable. 5
Then decide on the conservative number. If the confirmed season is four days and the pass costs $784 more than the tickets, the question is whether that is a price worth paying for flexibility. If it only works when every wishful trip happens, the plan is fragile. A first ski holiday budget is the place to start in season one, and a remote-work ski month changes the count entirely.
Should you upgrade to a higher pass tier?
Price the step between two tiers against the tickets it replaces on days you have already written down.
The upgrade is the only figure that matters. Ikon Base to the full Ikon Pass is $430. Epic Local to Epic is $296. Neither question is whether the bigger pass is better. It is whether the extra access replaces more than $430, or more than $296, of tickets on confirmed days. 8, 1, 7, 4
| Step up | Lower tier, USD | Higher tier, USD | Upgrade, USD | What the upgrade buys |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ikon Base Pass to Ikon Pass | 1,019 | 1,449 | 430 | 18 unlimited destinations rather than 15; up to 7 days rather than 5 at select destinations; Alta access, which Base lacks; all four Aspen Snowmass mountains rather than Snowmass alone; zero blackout dates; 25% off 15 friend tickets rather than 10; $400 CAD a day of heli credit rather than $200; $100 off a child pass rather than $50 |
| Epic Local Pass to Epic Pass | 849 | 1,145 | 296 | Telluride and the six Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which Local excludes; unlimited days at Vail, Beaver Creek and Whistler Blackcomb rather than 10 shared; zero restricted peak dates |
Adult prices, ages 23 and over on Ikon and 31 and over on Epic. Ikon quotes its CMH Heli-Skiing and Mike Wiegele credits in Canadian dollars on its own table, and they are left in that currency here. Big Sky's Black Pass and Gold Pass prices sit behind a selector.
Hold the upgrade against one ticket. Vail prints $335 for an adult 1-Day Lift Ticket bought seven days ahead, the figure it sets against its Peak Window Price. The Epic Local Pass excludes Vail on its restricted peak dates and offers holders an Advanced Lift Ticket Rate on those days, at a price Vail leaves off the page. If a fixed school week lands on a restricted date, the $296 upgrade is $39 less than one published advance ticket. 9, 7, 11
Age and group pricing move the same lever. Ikon prices a Base Pass at $800 for riders aged 23 to 28 when one person buys five for the group, a $219 saving each. Epic puts teens aged 13 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 30 at $909 on the full pass and $675 on the Local, with age checked by a third party after purchase. Children aged 6 and under ski free at Aspen Snowmass. 8, 4, 7, 2
Which perks and discounts belong in the break-even?
Credit a perk only for the gap between what you would have paid and what you now pay.
A discount is worth the gap between two prices, and nothing beyond it. Book an adult group lesson at Aspen Snowmass and the lift ticket that goes with it is $174, against the $189 single-day rate: a gap of $15. That $15 replaces spending. A 20% discount on a lunch you would skip does not. 2, 4
A child aged 7 to 17 or a senior aged 65 and over booked into a group lesson gets an $86 lift ticket. Aspen keeps its child and senior day rates behind a booking selector, so price the regular ticket before you credit the discount with anything. 2
Read the conditions before counting a friend ticket. The full Ikon Pass gives 25% off 15 Friends and Family lift tickets at the window rate, and the Base Pass 25% off 10. At Alta that discount runs same-day, at a ticket window, for a friend or family member rather than the holder, and it stops at lift tickets. Epic includes 5 Friend Tickets with a 2026-27 pass. 1, 8, 3, 4
Sometimes the right product is smaller than a pass. Alta sells three, and each covers something different. 16
| Product | Price, USD | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Sunnyside At 3 season pass | 99 | The Sunnyside lift only, 3 to 4:30 p.m. daily |
| Gold Card, adult or child aged 12 and under | 149 | 50% off Alta's window rates, plus the Sunnyside lift from 3 to 4:30 p.m. daily |
| Powder Card, ten days | 959 | Ten days at $95.90 each |
The Gold Card and the $959 Powder Card are priced through 30 September 2026; the Powder Card is $1,099 through 4 November, with unused value carried to next season. Alta's own 2026-27 single-day tickets were off sale on the research date, so the window rate the Gold Card halves sits behind that November on-sale date.
- Keep the lift bill apart from the trip bill. A pass makes the next lift day feel free and does nothing for the drive, the bed or the rental. Alta charges $25 for a parking reservation in its Friday-to-Sunday and holiday window. 3
- Price the trips the pass talks you into. Three extra weekends are three weekends of lodging. Seasonal ski housing covers that side, and what a ski season actually costs puts both halves on one page.
- Ask who in the group is eligible for less. Aspen Snowmass gives 50% off 2026-27 lift tickets to active-duty and reserve military, veterans with 20 or more years of service, and eligible dependents, on ID, discharge papers or proof of VA benefits. 2
- Count the cover that comes free. Every Epic Pass includes Epic Coverage at no extra charge, refunding for personal injury, job loss or resort closures, and Epic Mountain Rewards at 20% off food, lodging, rentals, group lessons and heli-skiing. 4
Deadlines, refunds and the record you keep for next season
Prices move between seasons and products disappear. Write down what you used, and what you paid on top.
The price you read is the price on that day. Ikon's live pages showed $1,449, $1,019 and $319 for the full, Base and Session passes on 13 September 2026. Alta's ten-day Powder Card is $959 through 30 September and $1,099 through 4 November, and that $140 gap buys the right to roll unused value into next season. 1, 8, 13, 16
| Product | What the page says | Date printed |
|---|---|---|
| Aspen Snowmass Flex Pass | Lock in your rate before prices increase | 19 September 2026 |
| Snowbird season passes | Prices increase on 23 September at 11:59 p.m. | 23 September 2026 |
| Alta Gold Card and the $959 Powder Card | Price valid through this date | 30 September 2026 |
| Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass | Prices go up October 7 | 7 October 2026 |
| Alta Powder Card at $1,099 | Available through this date | 4 November 2026 |
| Aspen Snowmass season pass collection | Lock in the best price before this date | 4 December 2026 |
Each operator states its own deadline. Aspen Snowmass's Flex Pass date and its whole-collection date are two separate deadlines on the same lineup, and its page still carried the 19 September line three days after that date passed. Alta's 2026-27 single-day lift tickets were off sale on 22 September 2026; its page gives early November as the on-sale date.
Refund terms differ as sharply as prices. An unused Aspen Snowmass lift ticket is fully refundable, and unused days on a partly used multi-day ticket convert to in-resort credit at full per-day value if you bring it, call or email within 14 days of expiry. That credit is transferable and runs through the following winter and summer. 2
Big Sky refunds a ticket in full more than 48 hours before the start date and converts it to a 365-day credit voucher inside 48 hours, with documentation. The Aspen Snowmass Flex Pass is non-transferable and non-refundable, and adds extra days at 25% off the in-resort rate. 6, 10
Products change between seasons too. Aspen Snowmass's Valley Pass is gone, replaced by the Flex Pass, with 33% off for last season's Valley Passholders. The Flex Pass buys 4, 5, 6 or 7 chosen days with zero blackout dates, from $799 to $1,049 for an adult or senior, and $639 to $839 for a child aged 7 to 12 or a teen aged 13 to 17. 10
Log the day, not the plan
Resort, date, which entitlement covered it. One line each, written the evening you ski.
Write the ticket you would really have bought
The advance rate you would have booked, rather than the walk-up rate that flatters the pass.
Add every ticket you paid on top
Blackout days, days past an allocation, the $25 Alta parking reservation. Those go on the pass side. 3
Note why the missed days were missed
Work, weather and travel carry different lessons. A pattern of eight days a season is a fact about you, and next year's forecast starts there.
The method travels. Bansko Ski sold twenty non-consecutive days of the holder's choice for €859 in the 2025-26 season, which is €42.95 a day used in full, and its terms say unused days are neither transferred nor compensated. Different mountain, different currency, the same bank of days to count. 17

Next season's decision comes out of this season's log. Ski rental versus buying runs off the same record.
Frequently asked questions
Should a half-day count as a full day in my break-even calculation?
Count the spending it replaces. Where a short-session product exists, use its price: Alta's Sunnyside At 3 season pass is $99 for the 3 to 4:30 p.m. lift. Where none exists and you would buy a full ticket, that full ticket is your alternative. A limited pass day is usually spent whole, so a two-hour afternoon can burn a complete allocation. 16
What if I buy a pass early, before my travel dates are confirmed?
Price the deadline against the flexibility. Alta's ten-day card is $959 through 30 September with unused days lost, or $1,099 through 4 November with unused value applied to next season's pass or card. That $140 is the price of the option. Epic Coverage comes free with every Epic Pass and refunds for personal injury, job loss or resort closures. 16, 4
Does a ski pass make sense if I only plan 3 or 4 days a season?
Rarely at the headline price, and the operators sell for that reader anyway. The Ikon Session Pass is 2, 3 or 4 total days from $319, with lift reservations required and blackout dates. Four Big Sky day tickets at $84 come to $336, against $1,120 for its Adult Blue Pass. Buy the days and book them early. 13, 6, 5
How do I account for blackout dates and reservation requirements?
Mark every planned day valid, invalid or unconfirmed. An invalid day stays in the trip and its ticket price goes on the pass side: $89 or $199 for a Big Sky adult, depending on the month. An unconfirmed day earns no saving until the rule resolves. Ikon requires lift reservations at named destinations, while Vail Resorts' terms describe a reservation system it has yet to announce. 5, 1, 15
Should I include perks and discounts in my break-even?
Only the ones you will use under their stated conditions, and only at the gap between the two prices. Aspen's $174 lift ticket for an adult booked into a group lesson, against a $189 day rate, replaces $15. Alta's 25% Ikon discount runs same-day, at a window, and for a friend rather than the holder. Leave speculative perks out of the core sum and list them separately. 2, 3
Can I use the same method for a regional pass or an independent resort?
Yes, and the combination often wins. Big Sky sells the Ikon Pass only as an add-on to its own Gold Pass or Boyne Passport, so the two stack rather than compete. Bansko Ski's twenty-day card was €859 for 2025-26, or €42.95 a day used in full. Assign every planned day to the cheapest entitlement that covers it, then total the combination. 5, 17
How do I compare an upgrade from one pass tier to a higher one?
Price the step, then the tickets it removes from your own calendar. Ikon Base to Ikon is $430 and buys three more unlimited destinations, seven days rather than five at select destinations, and Alta access. Epic Local to Epic is $296 and buys Telluride, the Canadian Rockies and the peak dates. Access to a mountain you will skip is worth zero. 8, 1, 7, 4
