Ski rental vs buying: what changes after the first season?

The day count where each choice stops paying, from day rates, season rentals and a complete kit priced on three shops' own pages on 20 September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Epic Mountain Gear rents a whole winter of skis, boots and poles for $149. From five days on snow that beats renting a package by the day: five days at Jans' four-to-six-day Sport rate costs $175, and ten days at its cheapest Sport tier comes to $330. 1, 2
  • A complete new kit, mounted and tuned once, runs $1,370.86 on clearance prices and $1,703.84 at list. Skis, bindings, poles and boots from one shop's product pages, plus a $65 binding mount and a $69 tune. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
  • At ten days a season, buying overtakes weekend day rentals in the fifth season, around 41 days on snow. Against a $149 season rental the same kit takes about 16 seasons. 2, 1, 7
  • Your own boots save $9 a day at Jans and $5 a day at Christy Sports. Repaying $389.97 of boots on that saving alone takes roughly 43 rental days, so buy them for fit and bank the rest. 2, 8, 6
  • Southwest carries a ski bag and a boot bag as one checked item, so the whole kit flies for $45 each way on Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares booked on or after 9 April 2026, with oversize fees waived. 9, 10

Every figure here is a shop's own published price on 20 September 2026, before sales tax, plus one European shop read on 13 September 2026. Fitting, mounting and binding compatibility belong to a qualified shop technician.

What your first season already told you

By March you know the number. Six days at the hill an hour from home, four more on one trip, and a rental queue you could draw from memory. That count is the decision. A skier with one winter behind them holds better evidence than any rule about when to buy.

Three paths lead out of a first season. Rent by the day and pay a rate that moves with trip length. Take a season rental and pay once, in October. Buy a kit, then carry it, service it and fly it. Most people end up mixing the three, and the mix is usually the cheapest answer on the mountain.

Every price below comes from a shop's own page: Jans in Park City, Christy Sports across the Rockies, and Epic Mountain Gear in Colorado, all read on 20 September 2026. Sales tax sits on top of each one. For the winter around the gear, start with what a ski season actually costs, or with a first ski holiday budget if last year was your first. 2, 8, 1

What did renting actually cost last winter?

Two named shops, their own published day rates, and the reason four weekends cost more than one week.

The day rate you pay depends on the trip, not the season. Jans charges $39 a day for a Sport Package over one to three days, $35 a day at four to six days, and $33 a day from seven days up. Ski ten days as four weekend trips and every one of them lands in the top tier. Ski the same ten days inside one booking and you pay $60 less. 11, 2

Jans publishes a full length schedule. Christy Sports publishes one starting rate that covers any length and says price varies with package, dates and rental length, so the same figure repeats across its three columns. Christy Sports' Breckenridge page repeats the $45.95 adult Sport starting rate and prices a kids' Sport package from $35.95. Jans prices a jacket or ski pants at $28 a day for one to three days and publishes no rate for longer rentals. All figures exclude sales tax.

Ten days is where this gets concrete. Ten Sport Package days at the weekend rate come to $390. The same ten inside one seven-day booking come to $330. Hand over your own boots and the ski-only rate takes the weekend total down to $300. At Christy Sports' $45.95 starting rate, ten days is $459.50. 2, 8

The price of a kit, all in

Skis, bindings, poles, boots, the mount and the first tune, from two shops' published prices.

A complete new kit, mounted and tuned once, runs $1,370.86 at this week's sale prices. That is skis, bindings, poles and boots from Christy Sports' own product pages, a $65 binding mount at Jans, and one $69 Basic Tune. Pay list price for current-season gear and the same six lines come to $1,703.84, a gap of $332.98. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

The sale column mixes 25/26 clearance skis, bindings and boots with a current 26/27 pole. The list column prices the current 26/27 ski, the binding's own regular price, the same pole and the boot's own regular price. Jans' $65 and $69 are Park City service rates and repeat in both columns.

Skis and boots carry about 72 percent of the bill between them. The two service lines, $134 together, are the part that comes back in some form every season you own the kit. Source: 3, 6, 4, 5, 7

Two of those six lines repeat. Bindings get mounted once per pair of skis, and moving them to a different pair later costs $74 at Jans. A tune is a yearly line. The other four are single payments you hope to spread across several winters, which is exactly what the next section measures. 7

  • Sales tax sits on top of every figure on this page. Shops publish pre-tax prices, and the rate follows the county you buy in.
  • A helmet is a separate line. Jans rents an adult helmet at $17 a day, $13 over four to six days and $11 from seven days up, which is $170 across ten weekend days. 2
  • Clothing has its own budget. Jans rents a jacket or ski pants at $28 a day for one to three days, publishes no rate for longer, and hands out clothing in store only, first come first served. 2
  • Storage and transport arrive with the kit. Skis live somewhere between winters and reach the mountain somehow in January.

How many days before buying pays off?

Four paths, ten ski days a season, three seasons, on the prices above.

Hold the days constant and the answer stops being a matter of taste. The table below runs four paths at ten ski days a season, booked as weekend trips, which is the pattern that puts every rental day in the priciest tier. One Basic Tune a year sits on the owned line from the first season. 2, 1, 6, 7

Buy the kit at sale prices, one $69 Basic Tune a season$1,370.86$1,439.86$1,508.86

Ten days a season for three seasons, all four paths on the same day count and the same pre-tax basis. Sales tax, helmet, clothing, lift access and travel sit outside all four. The season-rental line is a Colorado program, the day rates are a Park City shop's and the gear prices are Christy Sports', so the table compares four structures at published prices instead of one shop's quote for all four.

So the answer splits three ways. Under about five days a season, book day rentals and take the advance-booking discount at Christy Sports. From five days up, a season rental is the cheapest way to have skis, boots and poles under you at every shop priced here, and by ten days nothing else is close. 1, 12

Buy when you want one specific ski under your feet often enough for the arithmetic to stop mattering, and when the boots already fit. The day count that settles your gear settles your lift access too, so run it once for both with the ski pass break-even.

Do boots deserve their own decision?

Owning boots has a price at the rental counter, and it is smaller than the advice suggests. At Jans, handing over your own boots drops a Sport rental from $39 to $30 a day, a $9 saving on a short trip and $7 a day once the trip runs four days or more. At Christy Sports the same switch saves $5 a day on the Sport package and $4 on Premium and Demo. 2, 8

Christy Sports Premium, starting ratefrom $55.95from $51.95$4.00
Christy Sports Demo, starting ratefrom $65.95from $61.95$4.00

Jans' rows come from a published length schedule; Christy Sports' rows are starting rates that cover any length. Every figure excludes sales tax. The saving column is the difference between the two rates at the same shop, same package and same length.

Now run that saving against the price of boots. A pair of Rossignol Vizion Pro 100 MV boots on sale at Christy Sports costs $389.97. Repaid at $9 a day it takes about 43 rental days; at Christy Sports' $5 a day it takes about 78. Ten days a winter and the boots clear their own cost somewhere in your fifth season. A stiffer pair, the Vizion Pro 120 MV, runs $519.97 on sale and stretches that further. 6, 2, 8

So buy boots for fit and count the saving as change. Fit is the one part of this page a spreadsheet handles badly. It belongs to a fitter with your foot in front of them.

Bring boots you already own and both shops sell a ski-only rate built for exactly that. On skis you own, Jans prices a Boot to Binding check and adjustment at $45, separate from the $65 mount and the $74 remount. 2, 8, 7

When a season rental beats both

A whole winter of gear for less than five days of day rental, and the questions to ask before October.

One Colorado program prices a whole winter at $149. Epic Mountain Gear's 2026/27 Sport ski package costs $149 for the season with boots, bindings and poles included, and its Demo package costs $249. Registration for 2026/27 is open, and the gear is collected at seven Colorado stores plus selected Breeze locations. 1

Ownership is the path whose two ends sit furthest apart, and that gap is the whole argument for buying. A later owned season costs one $69 Basic Tune. Reaching it costs the $1,301.86 of gear and mounting first. Source: 2, 1, 6, 3, 4, 5, 7

Epic Mountain Gear puts its own break-even at four or more days on snow. Test that against Jans' four-to-six-day Sport rate: four days costs $140, so the $149 season package costs $9 more. Book the same four days as two weekends at $39 and the season package wins by $7. Five days is where $149 wins everywhere. 1, 2

Divide $149 by Jans' cheapest Sport day rate of $33 and you get 4.52 days. Divide it by Christy Sports' $45.95 starting rate and you get 3.24. The $249 Demo package against Jans' $49 High Performance rate comes to 5.08. Three shops with no stake in each other, and every answer lands between three and five and a half days. 1, 2, 8

  1. Count last winter's days honestly

Use the days you skied, not the days you meant to. Four days is the line Epic Mountain Gear gives; five is the line its $149 clears at every shop priced here, because four Jans days at the four-to-six-day rate cost $140. 1, 2

  2. Check the pickup stores against your drive

Epic Mountain Gear's Colorado season gear is collected at Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Frisco, Littleton, Park Meadows and Westminster, plus selected Breeze locations. Pick the store on your way out of town and a season of weekend drives gets easier. 1

  3. Ask your own shop for a regional price

Christy Sports lists five adult seasonal packages and prices every one as varying by region, so its figure arrives by phone or in store. Ask what the season runs, what the tier includes, and the date the gear goes back. 8

  4. Ask what happens when your skiing changes

Epic Mountain Rentals describes swapping gear at any of its stores as ability and conditions change. Get the swap terms of whatever program you join in writing before October. 13

A season rental also travels badly, which matters if your winter moves around. The gear belongs to one region's stores and goes back there in spring. If your plans lean toward quieter months or other mountains, peak season against shoulder season changes both your day count and what a shop has left in your size.

The costs only owners pay

A bought kit comes with a yearly menu. Jans' Rennstall Tuning Center in Park City charges $82 for a Full Tune, $69 for a Basic Tune and $45 for a Sharpen and Wax. A plain Hot Wax is $23. Drop skis at one of its five locations by 4pm and the overnight guarantee has them ready by 8:30am, at whichever location you choose. 7

Rennstall's published menu at Jans in Park City. Phantom Glide costs $125 when added to a new-ski purchase and $135 when added to a Basic or Full Tune. Christy Sports names the same service types across its stores and publishes no prices for them, so another town's figure comes from a local quote.

  • One tune a season keeps the yearly line at $69. Two tunes and a mid-winter wax takes it to $161, which costs more than a whole season rental at the Sport tier. 7, 1
  • A second pair of skis carries a service line of its own. Moving bindings across costs $74 at Jans, on top of whatever the skis cost. 7
  • Storage is a real cost for apartment skiers. Eight months of the year the kit occupies a hallway, a locker or a friend's garage.
  • A rental counter absorbs breakage; an owner pays for it. Set aside what a season rental would have cost and let that money cover the rock you find in March. 1

The rest of the winter's spending sits beside this one. The skiing guides and adventure economics hub holds the pass, lodging and lesson numbers that share a budget with your gear, and it is the faster way to see which line is really eating the season.

Does flying with your own skis still pay?

One airline's ski policy priced against four days of rental, and the European shops that undercut both.

Southwest counts a ski bag and a boot bag as one checked item. Its policy covers one set of skis or one snowboard, one set of poles and one pair of boots, packed and tagged separately if you prefer, as long as each bag stays at 50 lb or under. Oversize fees are waived on that equipment, so the standard bag fee is the whole cost. 9

Southwest's own published schedule read on 20 September 2026. Travel booked before 9 April 2026 sits on an earlier schedule at $35 and $45. American Airlines charges standard checked-bag fees for sports items up to 50 lb with oversize fees waived, and applies bag fees per person, each way, which is the line that decides a family's sum.

So a whole kit flies round trip for $90 on a standard fare, and that beats renting from three days up. Four days of a Sport Package at Jans' four-to-six-day rate costs $140, so the bag fees come in $50 cheaper and you ski your own skis. Two days of rental costs $78, and the flight loses. Weigh the bags at home: 51 to 70 lb adds $100 on Southwest and erases the saving in one line. 2, 10

A family changes the shape of it. American Airlines applies bag fees per person, each way, so four sets of gear multiply four times, while four rentals at Christy Sports' Breckenridge shop can put children 12 and under on free gear with a four-day adult package. Ski luggage fees: when local rental costs less runs the same comparison across more carriers. 15, 12

Where you ski moves the answer as much as how often. Ski Mania in Bansko, Bulgaria priced a full adult set of skis, boots and poles at EUR 94 for six days on 13 September 2026, about $108.96 at the European Central Bank's reference rate of 1.1592 US dollars per euro published on 11 September 2026. Six days of Jans' Sport Package costs $210. 16, 17, 2

Ski Mania's published Bansko prices read on 13 September 2026, each extra day at EUR 15.67, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of 1.1592 US dollars per euro published 11 September 2026. Jans' six-day figure is its four-to-six-day Sport rate of $35 a day. All figures exclude sales tax and local charges.

That gap of roughly $101 for one week is the argument for renting at the destination and leaving the kit at home. 16, 17, 2

If the next few winters point toward Europe, Bansko for a ski month prices the rest of the trip around those numbers, and a set rented on arrival costs nothing at the baggage desk.

Frequently asked questions

How many ski days does it take to break even on owning skis?

At ten days a season on the prices here, the $1,370.86 kit overtakes weekend-rate day rental during the fifth season, around 41 days on snow. That kit is $1,301.86 of gear and mounting paid once, plus a $69 Basic Tune every season. Against a $149 season rental it takes about 16 seasons. Swap in your own shop's day rate and the crossover moves with it. 2, 1, 7, 3

Should I buy boots or skis first?

Boots, for fit. The money case is thinner than the advice suggests: $389.97 of boots on sale repays at $9 a day on a short Jans rental, about 43 rental days, and at $5 a day on a Christy Sports Sport package, about 78 days. Buy them because a fitted shell changes every day you ski, and treat the rental saving as change. 6, 2, 8

Can I use my own boots with rental skis?

Both shops here sell a ski-only rate built for that: $30 a day at Jans on a one-to-three-day Sport rental, and from $40.95 at Christy Sports. Give the shop your boot model when you book and let their staff confirm the match and set the binding. On skis you own, Jans prices that check and adjustment at $45. 2, 8, 7

How much does ski maintenance cost per season?

Budget $69 a season, one Basic Tune at Jans in Park City, and $161 if you ski enough to want a second tune and a mid-season wax on top. That ceiling costs more than a whole $149 season rental. Christy Sports names the same services and publishes no figures, so price yours locally before you commit to a number. 7, 1, 8

Is a season rental cheaper than daily rentals?

From five days on, yes, at every shop priced here. Epic Mountain Gear's 2026/27 Sport package is $149 for the winter with boots, bindings and poles. Four days at Jans' four-to-six-day rate costs $140 and stays cheaper; five days costs $175 and does not. Ten weekend days of a Jans Sport Package is $390, and ten days at Christy Sports' $45.95 starting rate is $459.50. 1, 2, 8

Will the rental shop still be called Epic Mountain Rentals?

At 12 Vail Resorts mountains it becomes My Epic Gear for winter 2026/27, announced on 16 March 2026 and already flagged on the operator's own site. The $50 seasonal membership fee disappears with the change, and Demo pricing stays in line with typical Demo rental pricing. Book under whichever name the resort is showing. 14, 13

What is the cost difference between buying new and used skis?

Price a used pair against the new column in the kit table, where current-season skis run $599.95 and a clearance pair $595.97, then add the $65 binding mount and, for boots you already own, the $45 Boot to Binding check. No used-gear seller published a price this page could read on 20 September 2026, so no used figure appears here. 3, 7

What is a realistic resale value for used ski equipment?

Treat resale as a quote, not a rule. Your buyer prices against the same two numbers you did, a $599.95 current-season ski and a $595.97 clearance pair at one shop, and then pays $65 to have bindings mounted on whatever they buy. Ask a local shop what it pays on consignment before you count any resale money in your budget. 3, 7

How much should I budget for ski baggage fees when traveling?

On Southwest, $45 each way for a first checked bag on Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares booked on or after 9 April 2026, with the ski bag and boot bag counted as one item. That is $90 round trip, oversize waived. Keep each bag at 50 lb: 51 to 70 lb adds $100. Choice Extra fares and A-List Preferred members check two bags free. 10, 9
