PADI course prices in Amed: what getting certified costs

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The fees each shop leaves off the sticker, and why the cheapest headline price in Tulamben is not the cheapest course.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Three named Amed shops price a first certification between IDR 5,100,000 and IDR 6,000,000, about USD 285 to 335. Amed White Sand Divers takes the low end, Scuba Odessey the high end, and Amed Jepun Divers charges IDR 5,500,000 for the SSI version. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Tulamben looks cheaper until you add the drive, and the shop won't say how often the fee applies. Let's Dive Tulamben charges IDR 4,900,000, plus IDR 50,000 each way to collect you from Amed. Taken once, that is IDR 5,000,000; taken on all three course days, IDR 5,200,000, above the cheapest Amed price. 5, 1
  • Nusa Penida costs about IDR 1,925,000 more than the cheapest Amed course, roughly USD 107. Scuba Junkie Penida's IDR 6,800,000 becomes IDR 7,025,000 once its own harbour levy and per-boat-day fee are added. 6, 1, 4
  • Every Bali price here has the theory inside it. PADI's US store sells the Open Water eLearning alone for USD 251, about IDR 4,497,000, which is most of an Amed course before an instructor gets wet with you. 7, 4
  • The card is what an insurer asks for. SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance excludes an accident where the diver was not certified for the activity. 8

Three days, four dives, one card

The classroom is the bay at the end of the road. Amed's water runs 26 to 29 degrees Celsius, the seas stay calm through the dry season from April to November, and July to October brings the clearest water of the year. You strap on a tank, wade off black sand, and the reef begins under your fins. 9

A first certification costs IDR 5,100,000 to IDR 6,000,000 here, about USD 285 to 335. Three named shops publish those prices, each for three days of training. Amed White Sand Divers, which ran 350 Open Water courses in 2025, sits at the bottom of the range with hotel pickup in the Amed area already inside its price. 1, 2, 3, 4

Amed also sits within reach of the two places people weigh it against. Tulamben and the USAT Liberty wreck are 12 kilometres north-west up the coast road. Nusa Penida is a boat ride from Sanur, on the far side of the island. Every course below is priced the way you would pay for it while staying in Amed. 10, 6

For what to do with the card once it arrives, MMT's Amed dive sites guide covers the reef, the wrecks and the fun-dive rates, and the Amed diving month budget prices a longer stay on this coast.

What does a PADI course cost in Amed?

Three named shops and their own published prices, read 26 September 2026. Rupiah first, dollars at Bank Indonesia's reference rate.

The gap between the cheapest and the dearest Amed course is IDR 900,000, about USD 50. Three days at the two shops that state a fixed length and three to four at Scuba Odessey, same 18-metre limit at the two shops that state one, same card at the end. What moves the price is what each shop folds in: taxes and hotel pickup at one, DAN insurance and course materials at another. 1, 2, 3, 4

Scuba OdesseyPADI Open Water3 to 46,000,000335All materials, the certification fee and DAN insurance; 5 dives

Each figure is the shop's own published price on the research date. Amed White Sand Divers and Amed Jepun Divers both certify to a maximum depth of 18 metres and both ask for a 200-metre swim. Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of Rp17,917.00 per US dollar, 25 September 2026, rounded to the dollar.

The level above pays for itself if you already want it. Scuba Odessey prices Advanced Open Water at IDR 5,300,000 and the two courses together at IDR 10,550,000, a saving of IDR 750,000, about USD 42. Amed White Sand Divers sells the same pair for IDR 9,000,000. 2, 1, 4

A try dive is cheaper today and dearer by Friday. Amed Jepun Divers sells an uncertified Basic Diver dive for IDR 1,000,000, about USD 56. A certified diver booking two guided fun dives the same day at that shop pays IDR 1,100,000, which works out at IDR 550,000 a dive. 11, 4

So the card saves IDR 450,000 on every dive after it. Against Amed Jepun Divers' course price of IDR 5,500,000, the course pays for itself on about the thirteenth dive. A week of diving clears that line. One afternoon in the water stays cheaper as a try dive. 3, 11

Is it cheaper to learn in Tulamben?

Two named Tulamben shops, priced from an Amed bed and then from a Tulamben one.

The cheapest headline price on this page belongs to Tulamben, and it stops being cheapest once the pickup fee is added. Let's Dive Tulamben runs a two to three day PADI Open Water course for IDR 4,900,000, and charges IDR 50,000 each way to collect a student from Amed, but its own page does not say how often that fee applies. Taken once each way it is IDR 5,000,000. Taken on all three course days it is IDR 5,200,000. 5

Amed White Sand Divers charges IDR 5,100,000 with Amed pickup inside the price, above Let's Dive Tulamben's IDR 5,000,000 one-trip figure but below its IDR 5,200,000 three-day figure. Ask the shop which applies before the discount reverses. Sleeping in Tulamben instead changes the answer, and Tulamben Wreck Divers prices that directly: about IDR 5,075,000 for the course alone, or IDR 6,990,000 with four nights of air-conditioned accommodation and transfers. 1, 5, 12

Those four nights work out at IDR 478,750 each, about USD 27. The package holds the course, the room and the transfers in one number, which suits a diver who wants the wreck on the doorstep for four days. All four of its ocean dives happen on the Liberty. 12, 4

What does Nusa Penida add to the bill?

Nusa Penida is the expensive place to certify, and its headline price is only the start of the bill. Purple Dive Penida charges IDR 6,850,000 and Scuba Junkie Penida IDR 6,800,000, the tightest pair of prices among the seven shops here. Both sit above every Amed and Tulamben course here. 13, 6

The course also moves you across the island. Boats leave Sanur for Nusa Penida from 7:30 a.m., and the last boat back is at 5 p.m. Starting the course on the day you arrive means taking that first crossing. With a bed in Amed, you relocate for the length of the course and pay for the nights on the island. 6

One more line for the calendar. Scuba Junkie Penida's page states a diver stays off flights and altitude until 18 hours after the last dive ends. Put the course days early in a Bali trip, well clear of the flight home, wherever you take them. 6

What the money buys is different water, and one piece of kit. Purple Dive Penida's course price carries a dive computer, which the three Amed inclusion lists leave out, and the shop takes 5 percent off for your own equipment and 5 percent for three days or more, capped at 15 percent. 13

PADI or SSI: does the agency matter for the price?

Amed has a named SSI course, and it prices inside the PADI range. Amed Jepun Divers runs SSI Open Water over three days for IDR 5,500,000, about USD 307, capped at four students to an instructor and certifying to 18 metres. That sits between Amed White Sand Divers' IDR 5,100,000 and Scuba Odessey's IDR 6,000,000. 3, 1, 2, 4

An insurer treats the two the same. SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance accepts PADI, NAUI, SSI and BSAC alike. The card matters. The logo on the front of it matters much less. 8

So choose on the instructor, the group size and the dive sites. Amed Jepun Divers holds its courses to four students, finishes most of them with a dive on the USAT Liberty wreck, and takes 10 percent off for students who stay at its own Jepun Hill Studios. 3

For how the agencies price training elsewhere in the world, MMT's scuba certification cost page pulls tuition, pool time and open-water fees apart so you can see which shop folded what into the sticker.

What the price already covers

Every Bali price above has the theory inside it. PADI's own US store sells the Open Water eLearning on its own for USD 251, about IDR 4,497,000 at the reference rate. That is most of an Amed course, before any instructor gets in the water with you. 7, 4

The entry requirements are modest, and the shops that state them agree. Minimum age 10. A 200-metre swim. A short medical questionnaire before the first day. 3, 1, 6

  • Three or four days of your trip. PADI's own page puts the course at 2 to 4 days. Two of the three Amed shops and Scuba Junkie Penida state three days; Scuba Odessey says three to four, Let's Dive Tulamben says two to three, and Purple Dive Penida does not publish a day count for its base course. 7, 1, 3, 6, 2, 5, 13
  • Four or five dives in open water. Amed White Sand Divers runs four, including the USAT Liberty wreck. Scuba Odessey lists five. Scuba Junkie Penida runs a pool day, then two boat dives a day. 1, 2, 6
  • Equipment, the instructor and the certification fee at all seven shops, with lunch or snacks at most of them. 1, 3, 2, 5, 12, 13, 6
  • Tax, where the shop says so. Scuba Junkie Penida's price holds until 31 December 2026 and includes 10 percent government tax. Amed White Sand Divers says all taxes; Purple Dive Penida says all government taxes. 6, 1, 13
  • Site fees at the Amed and Tulamben shops. Let's Dive Tulamben covers dive-site entrance tickets and the porter fee. Amed Jepun Divers' course page states its price covers the regional tax; its separate fun-dive price list also lists park fees as included, though its course page does not repeat that line - ask the shop to confirm park fees are covered on the course itself. 5, 3, 11

What no sticker covers is the comparison with learning at home before you fly. MMT's learn to dive at home or abroad page sets the whole training journey side by side, flights and all.

Your three days, in order

The shape holds at every shop here: paperwork, shallow water, then the sea. Every shop here runs the same three beats in the same order, and publishes its own version of the detail. 3, 6, 1

  1. Before you arrive

Work through the eLearning or digital theory the course price already bought. Fill in the medical questionnaire. If an answer on it needs a doctor's signature, sort that at home while it costs you nothing but time. 3, 6

  2. Day one, confined water

A 200-metre swim, then skills in shallow or pool water. Scuba Junkie Penida runs its first day in a pool with lunch there; the Amed shops teach in the bay. 3, 1, 6

  3. Days two and three, open water

Four dives across the course at Amed White Sand Divers, five at Scuba Odessey, two a day on the boat at Scuba Junkie Penida. Depth stays inside 18 metres at the two shops that publish a limit. 1, 2, 6

  4. The last dive

Most Amed Jepun Divers courses finish on the USAT Liberty wreck, 12 kilometres up the coast road at Tulamben. Amed White Sand Divers puts the Liberty among its open-water dives too. 3, 1, 10

  5. After the card

Stay off flights and altitude for 18 hours after the last dive ends, per Scuba Junkie Penida's own guidance. Then book fun dives at IDR 550,000 a dive in a two-dive day. 6, 11

What to settle before you pay

Two emails ahead of the deposit settle almost everything here. One to the shop about the transfer and what the price excludes, one to your insurer about the activity clause. Both answers are worth having in writing before a rupiah moves. 5, 6, 8

  • Settle in rupiah. Tulamben Wreck Divers converts at a fixed IDR 15,000 to the dollar on its own site, while Bank Indonesia's reference rate was Rp17,917.00 on 25 September 2026. Read the rupiah figure and let the shop keep its conversion. 12, 4
  • Ask what the price excludes, in writing. Of the seven shops here, only Scuba Junkie Penida spells out a levy and a conservation fee on its own course page. 6
  • Ask about the transfer if you sleep outside the shop's own village. Let's Dive Tulamben publishes IDR 50,000 each way from Amed. The rest publish nothing either way. 5
  • Book the course days early in the trip, and keep more than 18 hours between the last dive and any flight. 6
  • Pick the month if you can. April to November holds the best visibility, and July to October the clearest water. 9
  • Ask whether the shop teaches PADI, SSI or both, and for a price on each. Amed Jepun Divers publishes a clean SSI course price; its general prices page was unreadable on the research date, so its PADI figure is a question for the shop. 3, 11
  • Price the insurance beside the course. MMT's scuba insurance costs page covers the wording to look for before you buy.
  • Sort the bed and the drive. MMT's where to stay in Amed and getting to Amed pages handle both, and the Indonesia country guide covers arrival.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a PADI Open Water course in Amed?

IDR 5,100,000 to IDR 6,000,000 at the two named PADI shops, about USD 285 to 335, for three or four days and four or five open-water dives. Amed White Sand Divers is the cheaper of the two at IDR 5,100,000, with hotel pickup in the Amed area and all taxes inside the price. 1, 2, 4

What is the cheapest open water course in Bali?

Of the seven named shops priced here, the two cheapest are both in Tulamben: Let's Dive Tulamben at IDR 4,900,000 and Tulamben Wreck Divers at about IDR 5,075,000. Let's Dive Tulamben's own page adds IDR 50,000 each way for pickup from Amed but does not say how often that applies: once each way it is IDR 5,000,000, still under Amed White Sand Divers' IDR 5,100,000; taken on all three course days it is IDR 5,200,000, above it. Ask the shop which applies. 5, 12, 1

Can I learn to dive with SSI in Amed?

Yes. Amed Jepun Divers runs an SSI Open Water course over three days for IDR 5,500,000, about USD 307, with four students to an instructor, a 200-metre swim and a medical questionnaire. Every Tulamben and Nusa Penida course priced on this page is PADI-branded instead. 3, 4

Is Amed or Nusa Penida better value for learning to dive?

Amed, on price. Nusa Penida's two named shops charge IDR 6,800,000 and IDR 6,850,000, and Scuba Junkie Penida's total reaches IDR 7,025,000 once the fees it excludes are paid - about IDR 1,925,000 above Amed's cheapest course, before the Sanur boat and the nights on the island. 6, 13, 1, 4

How many days does the course take?

Three days at Amed White Sand Divers, Amed Jepun Divers and Scuba Junkie Penida, two to three at Let's Dive Tulamben, and three to four at Scuba Odessey and Tulamben Wreck Divers. Purple Dive Penida publishes no day count for its base course, so ask before you book it. PADI's own page puts the course at 2 to 4 days. Leave a spare day in the plan for weather. 1, 3, 6, 5, 2, 12, 13, 7

How old do you have to be to learn to dive in Amed?

Ten. Amed Jepun Divers and Scuba Junkie Penida both set the minimum age at 10. Divers under 15 earn a Junior Open Water certification, and 10 and 11 year olds stay above 12 metres until they turn 12. 3, 6

Is the card worth it if I only dive once?

For a single afternoon in the water, a try dive at IDR 1,000,000 costs less. The card changes the price of every dive after it: IDR 550,000 a dive in a two-dive day at Amed Jepun Divers, against IDR 1,000,000 for an uncertified one at the same shop. Against its IDR 5,500,000 course, that pays for itself on about the thirteenth dive. 11, 3

Does travel insurance cover a diving course?

Read the activity clause. SafetyWing's policy accepts PADI, NAUI, SSI and BSAC but excludes an accident where the diver was not certified for what they were doing - and a training dive is not yet a certified dive. Ask your insurer in writing before the course starts. 8
