Jacó surf lessons: what they cost and where to take them

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Lesson and rental prices from named Jacó schools and shops, read on 25 September 2026, plus the tide, the season and the beach that matches your level.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Two hours with an instructor costs $60 to $80. Tortuga Surf Camp charges $60 a head once three people book together and $80 for one-on-one coaching; Jaco Beach Surf School's $65 standard lesson includes the board and rash guard for 24 hours. 2, 3
  • Rent by the week from day six on a longboard. Walter Surf Shop prices a longboard at $20 a day or $100 a week, so seven single days cost $140 and the weekly rate saves $40. A shortboard is $15 a day or $100 a week. 4
  • Learn in Jacó's bay, graduate to Playa Hermosa. Hermosa sits 10 to 15 minutes south, takes south-west swell head on and breaks boards on its bigger days. It became Central America's first World Surfing Reserve on 23 September 2020. 5, 6
  • The best tide for the wave is the strongest tide for the rip. Playa Jacó surfs best around high tide, which is also when rip currents run hardest at the two ends of the bay, away from the lifeguarded central strip. 7, 8
  • Two days of surfing from San José starts near $95 a person: the bus both ways, a $60 group lesson and a $15 shortboard the next day. The shared-shuttle version of the same two days is about $185. 9, 2, 4, 3

Your first wave, and what it costs

Jacó's bay is wide, and the swell that reaches it arrives as secondary waves rolling the length of the sand. That is why the lessons happen here. At the south end the shape holds glassier; the north end runs choppier and punchier. An instructor steadies the tail of a foam board, picks a wave, and pushes. You stand, or you fall. Then you paddle out and go again. 1

Two hours in the water costs $60 to $80, a board for the day costs $15 to $25, and the beach sits about 100 km from the airport at San José, roughly 1.5 hours by car. Every price on this page comes from a named school's or a named shop's own page, read on 25 September 2026. 2, 3, 4, 9

One decision shapes your week more than any price. Jacó's bay is where people learn. Playa Hermosa, 10 to 15 minutes south, is where the swell lands with enough power to snap a board. Get that choice right and the rest is booking. If Jacó is one stop in a longer route, two weeks in Costa Rica sets out the drives around it. 5

How much does a surf lesson in Jacó cost?

Two named schools, five lesson formats, and the cost per hour behind each sticker price.

Both schools price the same two hours between $60 and $80, and group size is the lever. Tortuga Surf Camp charges $80 for one-on-one coaching, $70 a head for a couple or two friends, and $60 a head once three people book together. Jaco Beach Surf School runs a $65 standard lesson and an $80 private lesson that lasts three hours and collects you from your Jacó hotel. 2, 3

Cost per hour is each school's own price divided by its own stated hours: $65 over 2 hours is $32.50, $80 over 3 hours is $26.67, $60 over 2 hours is $30. The $65 standard lesson includes a board and rash guard with 24 hours of board use; the $80 Jaco Beach lesson includes the ride between a Jacó hotel and the beach. Children under 12 book a private lesson at Tortuga. Both schools quote in US dollars, and the colón has no line in the Federal Reserve's exchange-rate release, so nothing here is converted. 3, 2, 10

The sticker price hides the hour count. Jaco Beach Surf School's $80 private lesson runs three hours, which works out at $26.67 an hour, cheaper by the hour than its own $65 standard lesson at $32.50. Tortuga's $80 private class covers two hours, so it lands at $40. Same figure on the page, different amount of time with a coach. 3, 2

What does board rental cost in Jacó?

A board runs $15 to $25 a day; the week pays off by day six on a longboard, day seven on a shortboard. Walter Surf Shop publishes a price for each board type: shortboards at $15 a day or $100 a week, funboards and longboards at $20 a day or the same $100 a week, stand-up paddleboards at $25 a day or $120 a week. Leash and fins are in the price. Bring ID or a passport. 4

The gap is widest on the longboard, where a week costs $40 less than seven single days. On a shortboard the two prices almost meet, so paying by the day leaves you free to change board as the swell changes. Source: 4

The longboard is where the week earns its keep. Seven single days at $20 come to $140, against $100 for the week, a saving of $40. On a shortboard those seven days cost $105 against a $100 week, so the daily rate keeps your options open for $5. Jaco Beach Surf School rents from $20 a day across boards from 5'10" to 11'. 4, 11

  • Leash and fins come with the rental at Walter Surf Shop, which asks for ID or a passport at the counter. 4
  • The $65 standard lesson at Jaco Beach Surf School keeps the board with you for 24 hours, so your first rental day is already paid for. 3
  • Jaco Beach Surf School's range runs 5'10" to 11', enough to move from a long foam board to something shorter inside one week. 11
  • Walter Surf Shop also runs a Tamarindo branch, handy if the route carries on up the Nicoya coast. 4

Jacó or Playa Hermosa: which beach suits you?

Jacó teaches. Playa Hermosa tests. Surf Atlas, which writes up both breaks, sends learners to Jacó's bay and steers them away from Hermosa, a 10 to 15 minute drive south. Hermosa takes south-west swell straight on, and on the bigger days that power snaps boards. Crocodiles and stingrays sit on its hazard list. 1, 5

Save The Waves Coalition named Playa Hermosa, in the canton of Garabito, a World Surfing Reserve on 23 September 2020, the first in Central America and the 13th in the world, for its wave quality and its coastal wildlife. The dedication followed in 2021. A designation like that tells a surfer two things at once: the wave is worth protecting, and it deserves respect on the day. 6

When is the surf best, and at what tide?

Playa Jacó works best around high tide, with the wind off the land from the north-east and a groundswell out of the south-south-west. Surf-Forecast's spot guide calls July the most consistent month of the year here, with clean, rideable surf about 44% of the time. The break hands out lefts and rights. 7

Season decides which beach you want. Costa Rica's national weather institute puts the start of the rainy season on this coast between 2 and 10 May, and the end between 6 and 23 November. Those months bring the south-west swell that lights up Hermosa and gives Jacó its bigger days. December to April swings the swell west and north, smaller and better organized, which is the water a first lesson wants. 12, 1, 5

Rainy-season start and end dates are the weather institute's own figures for the Pacifico Central region, which covers Jacó, Quepos and Manuel Antonio, from the 1991 to 2020 climate period. The swell pattern is Surf Atlas's description of the same months; July's consistency figure is Surf-Forecast's. 12, 1, 5, 7

The season you pick moves the rest of the trip too. What two weeks in Costa Rica costs prices the same months across the country, and the Costa Rica country guide collects the routes on either side of Jacó.

Who should teach you, and what to ask

Ask for the certification by name: ISA Surf Instructor 1. Ballena Tales, a Costa Rican travel magazine, names that International Surfing Association qualification as the bar for a surf instructor here, and adds a ceiling of two surfers per instructor in the water at once. Neither Jaco Beach Surf School nor Tortuga Surf Camp lists an ISA certification on its own site, so put the question to the desk. 13

The water here has a record, and it is worth reading. Cruz Roja, Costa Rica's Red Cross, counted water-accident responses at 28 named beaches through August 2024. Jacó and Playa Hermosa tied at the top with four each. Nationally that season it logged 593 responses, 105 deaths and 27 people taken to hospital in critical condition. Those counts cover all water accidents, swimmers included; the source gives no surf-only breakdown. 14

  1. Pick the beach, then the school

Book a first lesson in Jacó's bay and keep Hermosa for later in the week. The two are 10 to 15 minutes apart, so a Jacó school can run you either way once you are ready. 5

  2. Ask three questions before you pay

How many surfers per instructor, is the instructor an ISA Surf Instructor 1, and does the price include the board. Two surfers per instructor is the ceiling the magazine's certification standard sets. 13

  3. Check the tide and where the lifeguards sit

High tide brings the cleanest wave and the hardest rip. Start on the central strip where the lifeguards are, and leave the two ends of the bay alone on a big tide. 7, 8

  4. Use the board for the whole 24 hours

Jaco Beach Surf School's $65 standard lesson includes the board and rash guard for a day, so the afternoon session after your lesson is free. 3

  5. Rent once you know what you want under you

Walter Surf Shop lists shortboards, funboards, longboards and paddleboards with leash and fins from $15 a day, and takes ID or a passport at the counter. 4

What does a surf trip to Jacó cost from San José?

Jacó sits about 100 km south-west of Juan Santamaría airport, roughly 1.5 hours by car, closer to 2 hours on a Friday afternoon or a Sunday. The road runs on Highway 27 toward Caldera, then Route 34, the Costanera Sur, down the coast. How you cover it swings the day's budget from under $10 to $160. 9

Distances and times as published by a Jacó shuttle and tour operator: about 100 km, or 62 miles, south-west of SJO, 1.5 hours in normal traffic and closer to 2 hours on Friday afternoons and Sundays. 9

The cheapest surf weekend starts near $95 a person. The bus both ways at under $10 a leg, a $60 group lesson, and $15 for a shortboard the next day. Swap the bus for a shared shuttle and take the $65 standard lesson with its 24 hours of board use, and the same two days come to about $185. 9, 2, 4, 3

Two days, per person$95$185

Arithmetic on the operators' own figures: $10 each way plus $60 plus $15 is $95; $50 each way plus $65 plus $20 is $185. The bus fare is the operator's 'under $10' ceiling and the shuttle the low end of its $50 to $60 band; the lesson board covers day one, so the next-day line is just the second day's rental. Beds and food sit on top. 9, 2, 4, 3

Everything else on the coast sits on top of those two columns. If Jacó is the surf stop in a bigger loop, the two-week Costa Rica itinerary puts it in order, and SJO or Liberia settles which airport to fly into first. Staying a season instead of a week? The digital nomad stay rules set out the income evidence and the insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a surf lesson in Jacó for two people?

Tortuga Surf Camp's semi-private rate is $70 each for two hours, so a couple pays $140. A third person drops everyone to $60. Jaco Beach Surf School's standard lesson is $65 a head and includes the board and rash guard for 24 hours. 2, 3

Is Jacó good for a complete beginner?

Yes. The bay is wide and takes its swell as secondary waves that run the length of the sand, and the south end holds cleaner shape than the north. Surf Atlas points learners here and away from Playa Hermosa. Start on the central strip where the lifeguards sit. 1, 8

Can I learn to surf at Playa Hermosa?

Hermosa suits intermediate surfers and up. It faces south-west swell head on, produces board-breaking days, and carries crocodiles and stingrays on its hazard list. It lies 10 to 15 minutes south of Jacó, which makes it a good second-week beach once you can paddle out on your own. 5

What is the best month to surf in Jacó?

It depends who is surfing. July is the most consistent month, with rideable surf about 44% of the time, and it suits a surfer who can already paddle out. For a first lesson, take December to April, when the swell swings west and north and arrives smaller and better organized in Jacó's bay. 7, 1, 5

How safe is the water at Jacó?

Rip currents run at the north and south ends of the bay and pull hardest at high tide, while lifeguard cover concentrates on the central part of the beach. Cruz Roja logged four water-accident responses at Jacó through August 2024, level with Playa Hermosa at the top of its 28-beach list. Surf in front of the lifeguards. 8, 14

Should I rent a board by the day or by the week?

By the week from day six on a longboard or funboard: $20 a day against $100 a week at Walter Surf Shop, so six single days cost $120. On a shortboard the week is $100 against $105 for seven single days, so the daily rate stays flexible for $5. A paddleboard week is $120 against $25 a day. 4

What is the cheapest way to get from San José to Jacó?

The bus is cheapest and slowest, under $10 a person but 3.5 to 4 hours door to door. The shared shuttle at $50 to $60 buys back about 90 minutes and a hotel drop-off, which is the swap worth making if you land in the afternoon. 9

Do I need my own board for a first lesson?

No. Both schools put a board in the lesson price, and Jaco Beach Surf School's $65 standard lesson leaves it with you for 24 hours. Rent from a shop once you know which board you want under you, from $15 a day. 3, 2, 4
