Jacó vs Manuel Antonio: where to base on the Pacific

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Playa Jacó runs about 2 miles of dark sand on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, and the rip currents here keep most swimmers knee deep. 1 · Pantar at Italian Wikipedia · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

Two towns on the same coast, 90 minutes apart: one is 2 hours from the airport and sells $150 rooms, the other is 3.5 hours out and starts at $345. Priced 25 September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Jacó is about 2 hours from SJO airport and Manuel Antonio about 3.5 hours, on the same shuttle company's own timetable. That is 75 percent longer in the van, for $59 a seat against $45. 2, 3
  • Manuel Antonio National Park costs $18.08 a foreign adult with tax, sells tickets online only and closes every Tuesday. Carara National Park, the closest park to Jacó, charges $10 under the same decree. 4, 5
  • A named Jacó hotel room starts at $150 a night with tax included; the comparable Manuel Antonio resort room starts at $345 before a 17.5 percent tax and fee, about $405.38. Over seven nights that gap is $1,787.66. 6, 7
  • You can have both. A direct shared shuttle links the two towns in about 1.5 hours for $45, skipping San José, which makes it faster than either town's own airport run and $14 a seat cheaper than Manuel Antonio's. 2, 3

Two towns, 90 minutes apart

A group surf lesson in Jacó costs $65 and runs about 2 hours. A ticket into Manuel Antonio National Park costs $18.08, sells online only, and the gate stays shut every Tuesday. Two towns on the same coast, about 90 minutes apart by shared shuttle, asking two different things of your week. 8, 4, 2

Jacó is the closer one, and the operators say so themselves. Croc's Resort and Casino, a beachfront property in Jacó, puts its own distance from Juan Santamaría airport at 55 miles, or 88 kilometers, and the drive at 1.5 to 2 hours. Si Como No, a resort on the Manuel Antonio road, puts its own airport run at about 3 hours. 9, 10

That hour and a half decides more than one afternoon. It shapes the arrival day, the departure day, and how much of a short trip you spend watching Ruta 27 go by. MMT's two-week Costa Rica itinerary puts both towns on the same coastal leg; this page is for the week when you pick one. 11

The rest of the choice is what sits within walking distance. In Jacó it is a 2-mile surf beach with a casino resort behind it. In Manuel Antonio it is the gate of the park Costa Rica's tourism minister calls the country's most visited. 1, 9, 12

How long is the run from SJO to each town?

Shared shuttle fares and times, read from the operators' own route pages on 25 September 2026.

Easy Ride runs the same shared service to both towns and prices the difference plainly: $45 and about 2 hours to Jacó, $59 and about 3.5 hours to Manuel Antonio. That is 75 percent more time in the van for $14 more a seat, each way. For two people moving to Manuel Antonio instead, the transfer alone costs $28 more in each direction. 2, 3

Allow 4.5 hours for San José to Manuel Antonio. Interbus quotes that on its one 7.30 a.m. departure; Easy Ride quotes 3.5 hours across four. Traffic decides which day you get, so take the earlier slot when your flight leaves the same afternoon. 14, 3

Which airport you fly into moves this whole table. The SJO or Liberia comparison prices seats into both Costa Rican gateways; every figure on this page assumes you land at SJO.

Is Jacó worth visiting?

Yes, if you surf, or if you want somewhere open after dinner. Playa Jacó runs 2 miles, or 3.2 kilometers, of dark sand with deep blue water past it, and the most popular lesson spot sits at the south end. The town behind it is a grid, walkable, with the beach at one edge. 1

  • Learn to surf for $65. Jaco Beach Surf School's standard group lesson runs about 2 hours and includes the board and a rash guard for 24 hours. A private lesson is $80 for about 3 hours, with the ride between your Jacó hotel and the beach included. Lesson times follow the tide, so the school sets the hour. 8
  • A casino you can walk to from the sand. Croc's Resort and Casino lists Jaco Casino, Game On Sports Bar, Liquidity Casino Bar and the Gatsby Hideaway on its own property, with slot machines, blackjack, roulette, poker and baccarat. 9
  • A national park for $10. Carara National Park, the closest one to Jacó, charges non-residents $10 a head under the same national park fee decree that prices Manuel Antonio, Decreto Ejecutivo 38295-MINAE. Residents pay 1,000 colones. 5
  • Two hours back to the airport. On a one-week trip, the short transfer is Jacó's quietest advantage, and it is worth about half a day at each end. 2

The two beaches, side by side

Same coastline, two different mornings. Jacó gives you a long, straight, dark-sand beach with surf schools along it and a town immediately behind. Manuel Antonio gives you the strip of hotels on the road south of Quepos, with the national park gate at the end of it and a local bus back to town. 1, 16

Weather is the one thing the two towns share exactly. Costa Rica's meteorological institute puts Jacó, Quepos and Manuel Antonio in the same Pacífico Central rainfall region, with the rains beginning between 2 and 10 May and ending between 6 and 23 November. One forecast covers both bases. 17

What does it cost to get into a park?

Manuel Antonio National Park charges $18.08 a foreign adult with tax, $5.65 for children aged 2 to 12, and free entry under 2. The government decree behind that price sets $16 for non-residents or the colón equivalent, which works out at 7,266.40 colones at the central bank's 25 September sell rate. Tickets sell only through the park service's online portal. 4, 5, 15

Manuel Antonio caps daily visitors around 2,500 and closes every Tuesday for maintenance, the schedule Costa Rica's tourism board set out when the park moved to Monday opening. 4, 12

  1. Pick a day between Wednesday and Monday

The park runs Wednesday through Monday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closes Tuesdays for maintenance work. Build the rest of the week around that one fixed day. 4, 12

  2. Buy the ticket online before you travel

Tickets sell through the park service's online portal, and the daily cap sits around 2,500 visitors, so dry-season mornings go early. The gate sells nothing. 4

  3. Decide about the car before you drive down

The park has no official parking lot of its own. Paid private lots line Route 618 and attendants in vests wave cars into them for a cash fee. 4

  4. Coming from Jacó for the day

The direct shared shuttle runs about 1.5 hours each way at $45 a person, so a day trip out of Jacó costs $90 in transport before the ticket. 2

Quepos or Manuel Antonio: where should you stay?

Quepos is the working town; Manuel Antonio is the strip of hotels on the road out to the park. Readers searching for one usually mean both. A Quepos lodging operator puts the local bus from the town station to Manuel Antonio at 320 colones, which it calls $0.50; at the central bank's 25 September reference sell rate of 454.15 colones to the dollar, that is about $0.70. 16, 15

Quepos holds the bus station, the shuttle stops and the airstrip. Si Como No, on the Manuel Antonio road, puts itself 10 minutes from the park gate and 25 minutes from the Quepos airstrip. Staying on the strip buys minutes at the gate in the morning. Staying in Quepos puts the rest of the errands inside a short bus ride. 10, 16

For a first visit built around one park day, the strip wins the early start. For a longer stay, Quepos keeps the transport in reach. The same 320-colón bus links the two, so either address gets you to the other. 16

What does a room cost in each town?

Four named properties, their own rate tables, read 25 September 2026.

Jacó's named hotel rate starts at $150 a night with tax; Manuel Antonio's starts at $345 before tax. Hotel Cocal and Casino, on Jacó's beachfront, prices its Courtyard room at $150 Sunday to Thursday in low season, 16 April to 30 November, and $210 on a high-season weekend, tax included. 6

Tulemar Resort in Manuel Antonio prices its Standard Room at $345 through the green season, 1 May to 15 November 2026, and $585 over the Easter window of 20 March to 3 April 2027. Both figures sit before 13 percent VAT and a 4.5 percent resort fee, which lift $345 to $405.38 and $585 to $687.38. 7

Jacó's hotel rooms sit in a tighter band and move less across the year. Manuel Antonio's resort tier starts higher and swings harder: Casa de las Flores almost doubles into Easter week. At the top of both markets the two towns meet again, around $1,300 to $1,490 a night. Tulemar figures exclude the 17.5 percent tax and fee; Hotel Cocal and Vista Mar include tax. Source: 6, 7

Seven nights is where that spread turns into a decision. A week in the Cocal Courtyard room at the low-season weeknight rate is $1,050, tax included. A week in Tulemar's Standard Room in the green season is $2,837.66 once the 17.5 percent is added. The difference is $1,787.66. The two-week cost page prices the rest of the trip around numbers like these. 6, 7

Both are real rooms at named properties, and neither is the cheapest bed in its town. Read them as the shape of each market rather than its floor: Jacó sells hotel rooms and large condos, Manuel Antonio sells resort rooms and villas, and the two ranges overlap only at the top. 6, 7

Pick a season, then pick a town

The rains arrive on the same week in both towns. Costa Rica's meteorological institute gives the whole Pacífico Central region a rainy season beginning between 2 and 10 May and ending between 6 and 23 November, on the 1991 to 2020 record. Temperatures barely move: average highs run about 88F (31C) in March and April and about 81F (27C) in November and December, with humidity near 83 percent in September and October. 17, 18

  • Dry season, December to April. The best weather, the most reliable wildlife sightings and the busiest crowds. Tulemar's Standard Room hits $585 over the 20 March to 3 April 2027 Easter window, before tax. 4, 7
  • Shoulder, May and November. Fewer crowds and lower prices, with the rains starting in the first ten days of May and easing between the 6th and 23rd of November. 4, 17
  • Green season, June to October. Heavier afternoon rain, September and October the wettest. Tulemar's green rate is $345 against $395 in the January to March window. 4, 7

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Manuel Antonio National Park on a day trip from Jacó?

Yes, on the direct shuttle priced in the table above. It runs as a shared service with hotel drop-off rather than a fixed timetable, so book the return pickup with room to spare before the park's 4 p.m. closing time. Pick any day between Wednesday and Monday, since the park closes Tuesdays, and buy the ticket through the park service's online portal first. 2, 4

Which town is cheaper?

Jacó, on every line this page prices. The airport shuttle is $45 against $59, the nearest national park is $10 against $18.08, and the entry hotel rate is $150 with tax against $345 before a 17.5 percent tax and fee. The two towns meet again only at the top of the market, around $1,300 a night. 2, 3, 5, 4, 6, 7

Is Manuel Antonio National Park open every day?

No. It runs Wednesday through Monday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closes every Tuesday for maintenance, the schedule Costa Rica's tourism board described when the park added Monday opening. The daily visitor cap sits around 2,500. 4, 12

Do I need a rental car in either town?

Shared shuttles cover both bases and the road between them, so a car is a choice. If you drive, budget Ruta 27's tolls at 190 to 760 colones a plaza across nine plazas, and plan for the park having no official parking lot: private paid lots line Route 618 and take cash. 11, 4, 2

Where do I learn to surf, and what does it cost?

Jacó. A standard group lesson at Jaco Beach Surf School is $65 for about 2 hours, with the board and rash guard for 24 hours; a private lesson is $80 for about 3 hours and includes the ride from your hotel. The school sets the hour by the tide. Rip currents at Playa Jacó are common, so follow the instructor on where to sit. 8, 1

When is the cheapest time to go?

The green season, June to October, when Tulemar's Standard Room sits at $345 against $585 at the Easter peak. The meteorological institute puts the region's rains between early May and mid-to-late November, and September and October are the wettest weeks of it. 7, 17, 4

Can I bring a surfboard on the shared shuttle?

Yes, for $20 a board on top of the per-person fare, so a Jacó to Manuel Antonio seat with one board is $65. Easy Ride's shared shuttles carry no pets, so plan a private transfer if you travel with an animal. 13, 2

How much is the Manuel Antonio park fee in colones?

The decree sets $16 a non-resident or the colón equivalent, which is 7,266.40 colones at the central bank's reference sell rate of 454.15 on 25 September 2026. The price travelers actually pay online is $18.08, the $16 plus 13 percent tax. Residents pay a flat 1,600 colones. 5, 15, 4
