Komodo island hopping: Padar, Pink Beach and the day boats

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Three named operators, their September 2026 prices, the government's park tariff, and the timetable that decides what the Padar viewpoint looks like when you get there.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A shared seat on the six-stop loop runs USD 81 to USD 120, and the park ticket sits outside the fare. The government charges a flat IDR 250,000 a day for a foreign visitor, about USD 13.95. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Day boats reach Padar between 8 and 10 a.m. One operator's published schedule sets the ridge at 08:00, and its own Padar page puts day-trippers on the stairway from about 9 a.m. First light belongs to the boats anchored nearby overnight. 1, 6
  • The Padar climb is 780 to 830 built steps, 25 to 45 minutes, on a bare ridge with rest platforms and open sun. Padar has no pier, so a tender runs you to the beach at the bottom. 6
  • Padar Selatan carries the tightest annual allowance of the park's three headline sites: 17,885 visitors a year in the 2018 carrying-capacity study, against 187,245 for Komodo Island. 7
  • Since 1 April 2026 the park caps visitors at 1,000 a day. Every entrance and activity ticket has been bought online in the government's SiOra app since the park authority's announcement of 4 February 2026. South Padar's climb is split into three timed sessions of about 330 places each. 8, 9, 10

The ridge before the boats

Padar has no pier. Your boat anchors in the bay and a tender runs you to the beach. A ranger checks park tickets where the sand meets the first step. Above that, a built stairway climbs a bare spine of hill. Three bays open below. 6

The hour you arrive decides what you see from up there. Komodo Luxury's one-day speedboat itinerary leaves Labuan Bajo by 07:00 and sets Padar at 08:00 to 10:00. The same company's Padar page puts day-trip boats on the ridge from about 9 a.m. By then the light is flat and the stairway is busy. 1, 6

Komodo Luxury's loop runs Padar, Pink Beach, a dragon stop on Komodo Island, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and Kanawa, back at your hotel by 17:30. Labuan Bajo Tours and Komodo Speedboat price a similar six-stop day from their own pages but don't publish the same stop-by-stop list. Their fares, the government's park tariff and the hours Komodo Luxury's route gives each stop are below, read from their own pages on 26 September 2026. 1, 2, 3

What does a Komodo island hopping day trip cost?

Three operators, their own published September 2026 prices, with the park ticket added in a separate column because none of them bundles it.

A shared seat on the six-stop loop runs USD 81 to USD 120. Komodo Luxury lists USD 90 a person on its open trip and USD 800 for the whole boat. Labuan Bajo Tours starts at USD 81. Komodo Speedboat asks USD 120 shared and about USD 2,000 private. The park ticket is extra at all three. 1, 2, 3

Day totals add one park ticket to one shared seat. The first two rows use the government's flat IDR 250,000 foreign entrance ticket, about USD 13.95 at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of Rp 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026. The third uses Komodo Speedboat's own IDR 350,000 day-trip figure, about USD 19.53.

The first bar is a from-price; Labuan Bajo Tours does not publish what park fee it collects, so it is shown with the government's flat ticket. The two private bars split the charter six ways as an illustration; both operators price the boat, not the seat. Park ticket at IDR 250,000 except Komodo Speedboat, which quotes IDR 350,000 for a day trip, so its two bars carry the higher fee. Rate: Rp 17,917 per dollar, 25 September 2026. Source: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

The fare buys the boat, the food and the guide. Komodo Luxury's page lists the boat for the day, lunch and snacks, water, coffee and tea, a guide, snorkel gear and life vests. Flights, the park fee and the drone permit sit outside it, and a drone permit takes seven days' notice. If you are pricing the whole trip, the Komodo trip cost breakdown adds flights and beds. 1

Padar Island sunrise: when do the day boats arrive?

The loop is a clock, and Padar is its first hour. Komodo Luxury's schedule collects you at 07:00, runs about 30 km to Padar in an hour to an hour and a half, and pushes off for Pink Beach at 10:00. Lunch is on Komodo Island. Manta Point gets twenty minutes. Kanawa closes the day, and the boat has you back at your hotel by 17:30. 1, 11

Distances and in-park legs come from the same company's park map page: Padar to Pink Beach is a 30 to 40 minute speedboat leg, Pink Beach to the Loh Liang dock another 20 to 30 minutes. Sea conditions move every line of this table.

The Padar climb: steps, sun and what to carry

Treat Padar as a hike and pack for one. The stairway climbs a dry ridge with rest platforms and open sky, 780 to 830 steps, 25 to 45 minutes for most people. 6

  1. Tender in from the bay

A tender runs you from the anchored boat to the beach at the foot of the stairway. 6

  2. Show your ticket on the sand

Carry the e-ticket from the SiOra app, or your operator's written confirmation of the session. Rangers check both at the base. 6, 9, 10

  3. Climb the stairway

Carry water. There is no shade between the sand and the viewpoint. 6

  4. Take the view, then come down

Three bays open below the ridge. A first-light climb has the stairway close to empty and descends in full daylight, which the operator's own page counts as the argument for sunrise over sunset. 6

No Komodo dragons live on Padar. Wild dragons are trekked at exactly two ranger stations, Loh Liang on Komodo Island and Loh Buaya on Rinca. Kanawa, Taka Makassar, Kelor, Sebayur and Siaba are dragon-free as well. UNESCO's listing for the park, inscribed in 1991, counts about 5,700 dragons across Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motong and parts of western and northern Flores. 11, 12

Why is Pink Beach Komodo pink?

The color comes off the reef next door. Red organ-pipe coral, Tubipora musica, breaks up and mixes into white carbonate sand, with microscopic foraminifera shells washing ashore red as well, according to a Komodo dive resort's own guide to the beach. The pink is a reef product. A healthier reef makes a stronger color. 13

The loop gives you an hour's slot here, 10:15 to 11:15 on the published schedule, and the same company's map puts the run from Padar at 30 to 40 minutes, so plan on less than an hour on the sand. Pink Beach sits on Komodo Island's own northeastern shore, a 30 to 40 minute run on from Padar and about 40 km by sea from Labuan Bajo. Snorkel gear comes with Komodo Luxury's fare. 1, 13, 11

Kanawa Island: the loop's easy swim

Kanawa is the stop for a cautious swimmer. The reef starts at the beach, so you snorkel straight off the sand with no boat transfer. The island lies about 15 km northeast of Labuan Bajo, 30 to 60 minutes away depending on the vessel and the sea, and measures about 1.4 km by 0.4 km. 14, 15

Kanawa Island, about 15 km northeast of Labuan Bajo and the last stop on the standard day loop. The reef begins in the shallows under this jetty. 14 · Stepgun · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

Day visits and overnight stays are two different questions here. Operators still sell Kanawa as a stop on the loop. The island's small eco-bungalow resort has run in fits and starts; 2024-2025 visitor reviews describe intermittent water and power, and there is no confirmation it is running normally as of August 2026. Treat a night on Kanawa as unconfirmed until an operator confirms it in writing; the day stop is sold as normal. 15

What do the park fees and the booking system cost you?

The government tariff, the daily cap, and the gap between the park's own pages.

The government charges a flat IDR 250,000 a day for a foreign visitor, the same on weekdays and holidays, effective from 30 October 2024 under Government Regulation 36/2024 and restated as current in April 2026 reporting. Diving adds IDR 25,000. A drone costs IDR 2,000,000 a day. 4, 8

The Federal Reserve's H.10 weekly release carries no rupiah line at all, which is why the central bank's figure is the one used here.

Figures from the 2018 carrying-capacity study by P3E Bali Nusra and WWF Indonesia, which put the park's whole annual ceiling at about 366,108 visitors; the three sites named here (Komodo Island, Loh Buaya and Padar Selatan) account for about 249,000 of that figure per the same report, with the balance spread across other park zones and dive sites the source does not itemize. Padar Selatan's allowance is still the smallest of the three named sites, roughly a tenth of Komodo Island's. Source: 7

Park and conservation fees are a dive-budget line as much as a travel one. MMT's marine park and conservation fees guide collects them across destinations, and liveaboard vs shore diving prices the two ways of reaching a reef. To get here in the first place, start with Bali to Labuan Bajo.

The water rules, and the people who live here

Komodo village, inside the park, is home to the Ata Modo, about 2,000 people in around 500 households. In the Komodo language the dragons are sebae, twins, from an origin story that describes people and dragons as siblings. Project Multatuli's reporting describes residents pressing publicly against tourism expansion planned for their island. 19

Komodo Island is officially part of West Manggarai Regency, in East Nusa Tenggara, just west of Labuan Bajo. The fee changes, the daily cap and the session system are Indonesian government decisions, and the park authority publishes the rules that bind your boat as well as you. Tour operators in that regency have protested the quota in public. 20, 8

  • Anchoring is banned in water shallower than 30 metres, except on fully sandy bottom, and in manta habitat. 21
  • High-speed running near dive and snorkel sites is banned. 21
  • Touching, approaching or feeding wildlife is banned, on land and in the water. 21
  • Serious violations put a visitor on a six-month blacklist from every Indonesian conservation area. 21

Ask your captain where the boat will anchor at Pink Beach and Kanawa. That rule belongs to the operator as much as to you, and the reef under the hull is the same reef that makes the sand pink. 21, 13

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to sleep on the water to get a sunrise at Padar?

In practice, yes. South Padar's first session runs 05:00 to 08:00 WITA, which opens two hours before a day boat leaves Labuan Bajo at 07:00. A liveaboard or an overnight charter anchored in the park is what puts you on the stairway in that window. Komodo Speedboat prices a private boat at about USD 2,000 against USD 120 for a shared seat. 10, 1, 3

How much is the Komodo National Park entrance fee for foreigners?

The government tariff is a flat IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per day, about USD 13.95 at Bank Indonesia's rate of Rp 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026. It is charged per person per day, so two days in the park is two tickets, and it is bought in the SiOra app rather than paid to the boat. What your operator quotes on top is in the table above. 4, 5, 9

Can I buy a Komodo park ticket when I arrive in Labuan Bajo?

Book before you fly. The park authority's announcement of 4 February 2026 requires every visitor to hold entrance and activity tickets bought online in the SiOra app, and April 2026 reporting describes the same digital-only flow under the 1,000-a-day cap. The park's own FAQ page, copyright 2023, still describes a counter at the Komodo Visitor Center, so confirm the method with your operator. 9, 10, 8, 18

Can I see Komodo dragons and Pink Beach in the same day?

Yes. The standard six-stop loop puts Pink Beach at 10:15 and Komodo Island at midday, with Loh Liang as the island's dragon-trek dock. Pink Beach to that dock is a 20 to 30 minute leg. Check that Loh Liang or Loh Buaya on Rinca appears on the itinerary you book, since those two ranger stations are where wild dragons are trekked. 1, 11

Can I swim at Pink Beach, or is it only a photo stop?

You swim. The reef starts a few metres off the sand, and living coral runs about 20 metres out before the bottom drops away. Komodo Luxury's fare covers snorkel gear and life vests. Tides push mild currents through the bay, so the resort's guide tells new snorkellers to stay close to shore. That guide also says strong midday sun washes the pink out. 13, 1

When is the best season for Komodo island hopping?

April to October is the dry season, with steadier seas and clearer air for the Padar climb. December to March is the wet season, when the hills turn green and the crossings get rougher. The park's fees and daily cap hold all year. 6, 8

Is a private boat worth it for island hopping?

Only with a full boat. Komodo Luxury charges USD 800 for the boat against USD 90 a seat, so six people aboard pay about USD 133 each before the park ticket, against USD 90 shared. Komodo Speedboat's roughly USD 2,000 charter works out near USD 333 each on the same six-person split. What you buy is the schedule, including an early start for Padar. 1, 3
