Komodo liveaboard hidden costs: what you pay beyond the fare

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Boats at anchor in Labuan Bajo harbour, on the west coast of Flores. Every Komodo liveaboard, and every fee on this page, starts at that waterfront. · Jakub Hałun · Source · CC BY 4.0

September 2026 prices from the boats' own pages and Indonesia's own park tariff, plus a worksheet that adds about USD 526 of extras to a USD 1,809 cabin.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A Komodo cabin fare and the park are two separate payments. Situju7's 5-day, 4-night berth is USD 1,809 to USD 1,944 after its 10 percent discount, and a compulsory USD 300 Komodo Port and Park Fee is prepaid on top: 15 to 17 percent more. 1
  • Indonesia's own entrance ticket is much smaller than the bundles you will be quoted. Under Government Regulation 36/2024 it runs Rp 200,000 to Rp 250,000 per foreign visitor per day, about USD 11 to USD 14, with a Rp 25,000 daily diving tariff for divers. 2, 3, 4
  • Crew tips run USD 10 to USD 20 per guest per day on Komodo Resort's own guideline, so USD 40 to USD 80 over four nights, pooled at the end of the week and accepted in rupiah, dollars or euros. 5
  • Nitrox is a boat-by-boat question. Situju7 lists it as unavailable; Komodo Resort's Komodo Sea Dragon charges USD 15 a day or USD 8 a tank, plus USD 5 a tank a day for its 15-litre cylinders. 6, 5
  • Hold USD 526 of extras around a USD 1,809 cabin: the park fee, a USD 126 return flight from Bali, four nights of tips, a USD 40 DAN membership and a USD 20 bank fee. That is 29 percent on top of the fare. 1, 7, 5, 8

Start with the fare, then count the rest

The quote you get for a Komodo liveaboard is a cabin, not a whole trip. On Situju7's own price table, a berth on the 5-day, 4-night cruise is USD 2,010, or USD 1,809 with the operator's 10 percent tour discount. The Bali Grand Suite is USD 2,160, USD 1,944 after the same discount. Twelve dives and one night dive come with it. 1

Then the separate lines begin. A compulsory Komodo Port and Park Fee of USD 300 per person, prepaid at booking confirmation. A USD 20 bank fee per trip. A camera fee and a Dragon Sanctuary trekking ticket, both named on the operator's page, both settled in cash at the park on the day you walk ashore. 1, 6

So the honest planning figure sits about 29 percent above the cabin. This page prices each line from the boats' own pages, from Indonesia's own tariff schedule and from Bank Indonesia's own reference rate, all read on 26 September 2026. 4

What does the Komodo park fee cost on a liveaboard?

The government ticket, the diving tariff and the activity levies, straight from the regulation, in rupiah and dollars.

Indonesia sets the ticket, and it is smaller than most quotes suggest. Government Regulation 36/2024 took effect on 30 October 2024. Kompas reported the foreign-visitor entrance ticket at Rp 200,000 per person per day. Floresa, writing on 15 April 2026, put the same ticket at Rp 250,000. Two outlets, one regulation, two figures. Budget the higher one. 2, 3

Four days inside the park, priced straight from the schedule, comes to Rp 1,000,000 of entrance tickets at the Rp 250,000 rate plus Rp 100,000 of diving tariff. Call it Rp 1,100,000, about USD 61. Situju7's USD 300 covers the port as well as the park, and it arrives as one figure with no breakdown on the page. 3, 2, 4, 1

The calendar changed in 2026. Since 1 April the park admits 1,000 visitors a day across Padar, Rinca, Komodo Island and 23 dive sites, in three sessions beginning at 05:00, 08:00 and 15:00 WITA. Your boat's operator books your visiting session under the new cap; ask which of the three sessions it holds before you fly in. 3

The same missing line shows up in dive budgets far from Flores, which is why MMT keeps a separate guide to marine park and conservation fees. Komodo is the expensive end of that family, and the one where the number moved twice in four years.

Why do sellers quote a bigger entrance fee?

Labuan Bajo's retail pages tend to show a bundled route fee instead of the ticket. One operator's own 2026 page prices a Komodo Island route at Rp 650,000 per person, about USD 36, and a Rinca route at Rp 900,000, about USD 50. Entrance, trekking, ranger access and a conservation contribution all fold into that single line. 9, 4

A second Labuan Bajo seller lists the same two figures and attaches a caveat: as of April 2026 it was still waiting for the park authority to confirm the consolidated structure, and it tells readers to check with their own operator. Two sellers, one number, one open question. That was the market on the research date. 10

Park fees are Indonesian government decisions, and they land on a place people live in. Komodo village, inside the park, is home to about 500 households and roughly 2,000 people who call themselves Ata Modo. In the Komodo language the dragons are sebae, twins, from an origin story that names people and dragons as siblings. 11

Ata Modo fishers and guides have pushed back hard on tourism expansion, and on the zoning from the 1980s onward that moved their village and narrowed their fishing grounds. When the province proposed a Rp 3.75 million annual pass in 2022, about USD 209 at the September 2026 rate, operators struck and the community protested. The province revoked the regulation behind it on 26 November 2022. 11, 12, 4

Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno confirmed the cancellation in Jakarta on 15 December 2022. The pressure comes back around. On 14 April 2026, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni told a House Commission IV hearing he had discussed raising the foreign-visitor fee with the Finance Minister. As of the research date, the Rp 250,000 ticket stands. 12, 3

One prepaid line is more than half the extras. Everything else moves with your own choices, which is where a budget has room. Source: 1, 7, 5, 8

The shape matters more than the total. That single prepaid line, the USD 300 port and park fee, is 57 percent of the extras and clears your account before you see the boat. The rest bends: which airline, how generous the envelope, whether a thirteenth dive tempts you at USD 150. Keep the extras as their own figure, apart from the fare. 1, 5

For the wider comparison, MMT's liveaboard versus shore diving cost worksheet sets the same week against a room in town and a day boat, and the guide to comparing dive package prices works through what an included dive count tends to cover.

Is nitrox available in Komodo, and what does it cost?

Ask before you book, because the answer changes by boat. Situju7's own vessel data lists nitrox as unavailable, and marks gear rental and wifi as surcharges. For a diver planning long repetitive days, that one line can decide the booking. Komodo Resort's Komodo Sea Dragon fills nitrox for any certified diver and publishes the price. 6, 5

Komodo Resort's FAQ also sets its dive-guide ratio at four divers to one guide and fills 12-litre aluminium cylinders with DIN or INT valves. Situju7 includes 12 dives and one night dive in the package price, so its USD 150 extra-dive charge applies only beyond those. 5, 1

On the Komodo Sea Dragon, twelve nitrox fills at USD 8 each is USD 96. Five days at the USD 15 daily rate is USD 75, so the daily rate wins on a heavy diving week and the per-tank rate wins if you sit out a dive or two. Add USD 5 a tank a day for its 15-litre cylinders, which that boat holds in limited stock. 5

Situju7 does not offer nitrox at any price, so this only applies if you book the Komodo Sea Dragon instead. 6

How much should you tip a Komodo liveaboard crew?

Komodo Resort publishes a plain tipping guideline: USD 10 to USD 20 per guest per day. Situju7 publishes no tipping figure of its own, which is why Komodo Resort's range stands in here. Tipping stays voluntary. The crew collects at the end of the trip and shares it out, and rupiah, US dollars and euros are all accepted. 5

Over a 4-night trip that is USD 40 at the low end and USD 80 at the high end, per guest, so a couple doubles it. Carry it as cash in clean notes and settle on the figure before you board, while the week is still an idea instead of a goodbye on the dive deck with wet hair and a bag to close. 5

  • Set the number at booking, beside the deposit. USD 15 a guest a day sits in the middle of Komodo Resort's range, which makes USD 60 over four nights. 5
  • Ask how the boat splits it. Komodo Resort pools tips across the whole crew, so one envelope reaches the galley and the deck as well as the guides. 5
  • Keep rupiah aside for the park day. The trekking ticket and the camera fee are paid on site, in cash, and those amounts land at the ranger post instead of on your invoice. 1
  • Price the tip against the fare, in percentage terms. USD 60 on a USD 1,809 cabin is 3 percent of the trip, which is less than the bank fee and the flight combined. 1, 7

Fuel surcharges and the lines that arrive late

A fuel surcharge is a live line on some Indonesian boats and absent from others. Master Liveaboards' own statement of 23 September 2026 sets USD 15 per night per person on Indo Master, citing the rise in global fuel prices during the conflict in the Middle East. Four nights, USD 60. Its Blue Horizon, Blue Melody, Philippine Siren and Thailand Master carry zero. 13

That statement dates itself and expires. It applies to departures up to 5 November 2026, and the surcharge is payable in advance of travel. A charge with a date attached can move at the next review, so the figure that counts is the one in your own confirmation email, with your own departure date beside it. 13

  1. Ask for the full line-item list before the deposit

Situju7's list is public: cabin fare, USD 300 port and park fee, USD 20 bank fee, USD 150 extra dives, a camera fee and a Dragon Sanctuary ticket paid at the park. Ask your own boat for the same list in an email you can keep. 1, 6

  2. Ask whether a fuel surcharge applies to your date

Master Liveaboards publishes a dated table vessel by vessel. A boat with no public statement can still add one, so get the answer in writing with the departure date in it. 13

  3. Ask which park fee the quote covers

Government ticket, bundled route fee, or a flat per-trip charge. Ask for the rupiah amount and the number of park days behind it. 3, 9

  4. Ask what the insurance line means

Situju7's listing marks diving insurance compulsory and separately offers a free short-term DAN policy on request. Those two facts sit side by side, so ask which one applies to your booking. 6

  5. Hold rupiah for the day you step ashore

The camera fee and the trekking ticket are settled at the park, in cash, at an amount set by the length of your trek. 1

What dive insurance do you need for Komodo?

Membership and accident cover are two purchases, and the cheap one is the membership. DAN's Regular Membership costs USD 40 a year for an individual and USD 60 for a family, carrying up to USD 150,000 of emergency medical transportation and travel assistance. The Enhanced tier is USD 75 and USD 100, for up to USD 500,000. 8

DAN membership tiers, USD per year, from DAN's own membership page on 26 September 2026 8
TierIndividual, USDFamily, USDMedical transportation benefit, USD
Regular Membership4060up to 150,000
Enhanced Membership75100up to 500,000

Membership covers emergency medical transportation and travel assistance. Dive-accident insurance is bought separately, for each member, at a premium DAN quotes by US state or Canadian province. 8

Dive-accident insurance sits outside that USD 40. DAN sells it per member, and its comparison tool asks for your state or province before it shows a premium, so the price depends on where you live. Get your own quote and put the real number in the worksheet. 8

MMT's guide to scuba insurance costs works through the wording that matters on a liveaboard week: chamber treatment, evacuation from a boat at anchor, and the depth limits your certification implies. Read it before the deposit, because the policy has to exist before the week does.

How much is a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo?

The gateway flight swings by a factor of six. Google Flights' fare index for Denpasar to Labuan Bajo shows the cheapest one-way nonstop at USD 63 on Indonesia AirAsia and the cheapest return at USD 126, with Batik Air from USD 132 and Garuda Indonesia from USD 386. The hop itself takes about an hour, up to two on some rotations. 7

Month matters as much as airline. January runs USD 65 to USD 115 on that index. July runs USD 170 to USD 185. Price the flight in the same hour you price the cabin, and treat USD 126 as the floor it is. 7

A dive traveller's bag is the other variable, and it is heavy. MMT weighs renting against flying with your own regulator and fins in baggage costs for your own dive gear, and the Indonesia country guide covers arrival and the islands either side of this one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Komodo park fee included in a liveaboard price?

Rarely. Situju7 charges a separate USD 300 Komodo Port and Park Fee per person, prepaid at booking confirmation, on top of a USD 1,809 to USD 1,944 cabin fare. That is 15 to 17 percent of the fare again. Ask your own operator for the figure and for what it covers, in writing. 1

How much is the Komodo National Park entrance ticket in 2026?

Rp 250,000 per foreign visitor per day as of 15 April 2026, about USD 14 at Bank Indonesia's rate of Rp 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026. Kompas reported Rp 200,000 for the same Regulation 36/2024 schedule in October 2024. Divers add a Rp 25,000 daily diving tariff. 3, 2, 4

Does the USD 300 port and park fee cover every day I am in the park?

No breakdown is published. Situju7 charges USD 300 as one flat, per-trip figure, prepaid at booking, and the same USD 300 line appears on its shorter 3D/2N itinerary too, so it does not visibly scale with the number of days you spend in the park. That is different from Indonesia's own government ticket, which is charged per person per day. Ask your operator whether its own port and park fee is a daily or a flat charge before you compare boats. 1

Can I dive nitrox in Komodo?

On some boats. Komodo Resort's Komodo Sea Dragon charges USD 15 a day or USD 8 a tank for certified nitrox divers, plus USD 5 a tank a day for its 15-litre cylinders. Situju7's own vessel data lists nitrox as unavailable, so a nitrox diver books a different boat. 5, 6

What does a Komodo liveaboard cost if you travel solo?

About USD 3,165.75 for the lean cabin alone, once Situju7's 75 percent single-cabin surcharge lands on the USD 1,809 fare, USD 1,356.75 more than sharing and more than the entire USD 526 of extras this page prices for a shared cabin. The park fee, flights, tips, DAN membership and bank fee still apply on top, unchanged by travelling alone. 1

How much cash should I carry for the park day?

Bring rupiah for at least three unpriced items: Situju7's personal camera fee, the Komodo Dragon Sanctuary trekking ticket, priced by trek length, and the park's ranger or naturalist-guide fee, none of which publish an amount this research could confirm. All three are settled on site, in cash, separately from anything prepaid to your boat. Ask your operator for today's rupiah figures before you fly in. 1, 6

What does a 5-day Komodo liveaboard cost all in?

About USD 2,335 per person at the lean end and USD 3,306 at the full end, on Situju7's 5-day, 4-night cruise with a Bali return flight, four nights of tips, a DAN membership and the bank fee. The camera fee and the trekking ticket sit on top, at amounts paid in cash on the day. 1, 7, 5, 8

Do I need dive insurance for a Komodo liveaboard?

Situju7's listing marks diving insurance compulsory and separately offers a free short-term DAN policy on request, so confirm which applies to your booking. DAN's own Regular Membership is USD 40 a year for an individual, and dive-accident cover is a separate purchase priced by your state or province. 6, 8
