Komodo snorkeling: mantas at the surface, no dive card

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Named snorkel sites, the three zones where the current keeps swimmers out, September 2026 day-boat prices from three Labuan Bajo operators, and the manta code of conduct.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Snorkeling here asks for no certification. Diving without one is banned under the park authority's list of prohibited acts, and nothing on that list applies to a swimmer at the surface. Mantas at Manta Point cruise two to three metres down. 2, 3
  • The IDR 250,000 foreign park ticket already covers snorkeling, about USD 13.95 at Bank Indonesia's rate of Rp 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026. The IDR 25,000 surcharge is billed for scuba, so a snorkel day skips it. 4, 5
  • A shared seat on a day boat runs USD 81 to USD 120. Only Komodo Luxury's fare page states gear and a life vest are included, so ask the other two what theirs covers. Add the park ticket and one day on the water lands between USD 94.95 and USD 139.53. 6, 7, 8, 4, 5
  • Three zones are closed to snorkelers: Batu Bolong, the northern pinnacles of Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and Shotgun, and the south Komodo sites around Horseshoe Bay. Channel current runs too hard for anyone at the surface. 9, 10
  • Stay three metres off a manta and keep the flash off. Both species have been under a full Indonesian protection policy since 14 September 2014, and a crowded cleaning station gets abandoned. 3, 11

Twenty minutes at Manta Point

You go over the side with a mask, a snorkel and fins, and that is the whole kit. Under you sits a rubble-and-coral plateau about 3 km long and up to 500 metres wide, in a channel where opposing tides drive cold, plankton-rich water toward the light. The mantas come for the plankton. On a rising tide they feed at or near the surface. 1

A reef manta measures three to four metres across the wings, and some animals here have been recorded past five. They pass two to three metres beneath you, close enough to see the spot pattern on the belly. A six-stop day boat gives the site twenty minutes on its published schedule. 3, 6

For the park as a whole, start with the Komodo National Park guide, and for the country, the Indonesia travel guide.

Do you need a certification to snorkel with mantas in Komodo?

The park rule that separates divers from snorkelers, and the short list of manners that applies to both.

No card, no course, no logbook. Diving inside the park without a diving certification sits on the park authority's own list of prohibited acts. No equivalent rule covers snorkeling anywhere in that protocol. Basic swimming ability and borrowed gear put you in the water above the same reef a diver pays extra to descend on. 2, 3

The money follows the same line. A foreign visitor pays a flat IDR 250,000 a day to enter the park, about USD 13.95, the same on a weekday as on a holiday since the tariff changed on 30 October 2024. Diving adds IDR 25,000 per person per dive activity, about USD 1.40. A snorkel day pays the entrance ticket alone. 4, 5

  • Three metres, minimum. Hold that distance from any manta, diving or snorkeling. Chasing, blocking and riding are out. 3
  • Hands off. A manta carries a protective mucus layer on its skin that damages on contact, which opens the animal to infection. 3
  • Flash off. Camera flash disorients and startles a feeding manta. 3
  • Keep the group small. Research in Komodo records mantas abandoning cleaning stations that get crowded, and a station takes years to establish. 3

These are protected animals. After the 2013 CITES listing of oceanic and reef mantas, the Government of Indonesia issued a policy for the full protection of both species and of whale sharks, effective from 14 September 2014. Researchers have photo-identified over 1,000 individual reef mantas in the park from their belly spots. A peer-reviewed study catalogued 1,085 of them between 2013 and 2018. 11, 3, 12

Where you can snorkel, and where the current says no

One dive resort publishes the clearest named breakdown in the park: its house reef, eight boat sites, and the three zones it keeps snorkelers out of.

The sites are not interchangeable, and the difference is the channel each one stands in. A Sebayur Island dive resort names its house reef plus eight boat-accessible snorkel sites, then names three zones where it puts divers only. Komodo's best-known dive sites form a separate list: Manta Alley, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Batu Bolong, Yellow Wall, the Cauldron and Tatawa Besar. Tatawa Besar is the one name on both. 9, 13

Site descriptions come from two operators' pages. The park authority publishes rules for dive and snorkel sites without naming them one by one, so no government list corroborates this table. Manta Point's page prints two depth ranges, 5 to 15 m in its summary and 5 to 25 m in its text; the wider figure is the one used here.

Batu Bolong is the site people ask about, and the answer is settled. A 2019 carrying-capacity rule capped the dive boats allowed there each day and stopped snorkelers swimming at it. Two independent operators describe the same hazard: a small pinnacle in a channel, with down-currents and eddies that pull swimmers off the reef. 10, 9, 2

How much does a Komodo snorkeling tour cost?

Three named Labuan Bajo operators, their published September 2026 prices, with the park ticket in its own column because none of them folds it into the fare.

A shared seat on a day boat runs USD 81 to USD 120. Labuan Bajo Tours starts at USD 81 for a six-stop run that includes Manta Point. Komodo Luxury asks USD 90 a person on its open trip, or USD 800 for the whole boat, and states gear and a life vest are included. Komodo Speedboat asks USD 120 shared; its inclusions list names transfers, lunch, a guide and water, not gear, so ask before you book. 7, 6, 8

Komodo Luxury's fare states gear and a life vest are included; ask the other two operators what theirs covers. The IDR 25,000 surcharge is billed for scuba and never reaches a snorkeler's bill. The last bar splits the USD 800 charter six ways as an illustration; the operator prices the boat, not the seat. Park ticket at IDR 250,000 except Komodo Speedboat, which quotes IDR 350,000. Your own gear costs IDR 40,000 a day in town. Bajo Rental, trading since 2015, rents a mask, snorkel and fins for about USD 2.23 a day, with free airport or port pickup and drop-off. Five days works out at IDR 200,000, about USD 11.16. That is the line for anyone staying ashore and swimming off beaches between boat days. 16, 5

Park entry now runs through the SiOra platform. Every visitor, Indonesian or foreign, reserves online before arriving, and a licensed operator can do it for you. For the wider budget, the Komodo trip cost breakdown adds flights and beds, and marine park and conservation fees collects this kind of charge across destinations. 17

Twenty minutes is the standard allowance at Manta Point on a six-stop day. Komodo Luxury's published itinerary leaves Labuan Bajo at 07:00, reaches Padar at 08:00, Pink Beach at 10:15, Komodo Island for lunch at noon, Taka Makassar at 13:30, Manta Point from 14:15 to 14:35 and Kanawa at 15:00, with a hotel drop-off by 17:30. A manta-focused day wants a private boat. 6

The run out to the site is the one number the same operator prints two ways. Its park map page gives 35 km and about 1.5 hours by speedboat. Its Manta Point page says about 45 minutes in one place and about 1.5 hours in another. Plan on the longer figure and treat an early arrival as a gift. 18, 1

How do you stay safe in Komodo's currents?

The current is the reason the reef is this good. Komodo lies in the Indonesian Throughflow, the channel between the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, and the water accelerates through the narrows between Komodo, Rinca and Gili Lawa. Twice-daily tides add to it. The same push drags cold, nutrient-rich water onto the reefs, and in the clearest months it opens visibility to 30 metres. 19

  1. The guide picks the tide, not the hour

Snorkel stops get planned around slack water, or set up as a drift that runs with the current instead of into it. The resort rates Manta Point mild to moderate, best at slack or on a rising tide. 20, 14

  2. Take the life vest if you want it

Komodo Luxury's fare bundles a vest with the gear, and guides offer one to less confident swimmers as a matter of course; ask the other two operators whether theirs does the same. 6, 20

  3. Swim across a current, not into it

If the water starts carrying you, turn and swim parallel to the shore or the reef line until you are clear of the flow. Fighting it head-on empties your legs for nothing. 20

  4. Stay inside the site your guide named

Batu Bolong and the northern pinnacles lie minutes from water calm enough for a beginner. The difference is the channel, and it is invisible from the deck. 9, 14

When is the best month to snorkel in Komodo?

Mantas hold at the central cleaning stations all year. What moves is how many, and how far you can see.

Groups of twenty, thirty or more at a single station are most reliable from roughly September through May, with December to February the standout stretch. Late September falls on the rising edge of that curve. On land the park is one of Indonesia's driest places, 800 to 1,000 mm of rain a year, with a dry season from May to October and daytime highs near 40°C. 21, 13

One operator's table for its snorkel sites in the north and centre of the park. Water temperature and visibility both move with the weather and the tide on the day.

The two operators do not agree about September. Its May 2026 guide puts the peak from December to March, with large groups, warmer water at 28 to 29°C and reduced visibility to go with it. April to May and October to November bring reliable sightings, calmer seas and improving visibility. June to September brings smaller groups and the clearest water in the year, 25 to 30 metres. 22

The dry-season dip has a cause. From May to October reef mantas enter their reproduction period and spend less time at cleaning stations, so central sites drop to about one to five animals a dive. A study of 1,085 photo-identified mantas puts the southeast monsoon at May to October and the northwest monsoon at November to April, and found more movement from the southern site to the central ones than the other way about. 22, 12

The two readings do not resolve. The resort's calendar puts late September on the rising edge toward the big season; the dive operator's calendar puts the same month at the tail of the reproduction dip, running about one to five mantas a dive. Neither publishes an actual count for the week a reader books, so ask the operator what it saw that week. 21, 22

The water rules, and the people whose islands these are

Komodo village, inside the park, is home to about 2,000 people in around 500 households. They are Ata Modo. In the Komodo language the dragons are sebae, twins, from an origin story that describes people and dragons as siblings. Project Multatuli's reporting describes residents pressing publicly against the tourism expansion planned for their island. 24

Labuan Bajo, where your boat loads, is a Manggarai town. The Manggarai are the Indigenous people of western Flores, about 725,000 across three regencies. The park fees, the daily cap and the booking system are Indonesian government decisions, and the park authority publishes the rules that bind your boat. 25

  • Anchoring is banned in water shallower than 30 metres, except on fully sandy bottom, and banned outright in manta habitat and manta transit routes. 2
  • High-speed running near dive and snorkel sites is banned; the protocol names surface diving alongside scuba. 2
  • Diving without a certification is banned at the park's dive sites. Snorkeling carries no equivalent rule. 2
  • A serious violation puts a visitor on a six-month blacklist from Komodo and every other Indonesian conservation area, and a foreign visitor can be referred to the immigration office. 2

Ask your captain where the boat will anchor. That rule binds the operator as much as it binds you, and the reef under the hull at Pink Beach is the reef that makes the sand pink: broken red organ-pipe coral mixed into white carbonate sand. Living coral runs about 20 metres out from that shore before the water drops away. 2, 15

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Komodo snorkeling tour cost in 2026?

A shared seat on a six-stop day boat runs USD 81 to USD 120 with three named Labuan Bajo operators. Add the park ticket, IDR 250,000 or about USD 13.95 (Komodo Speedboat quotes IDR 350,000, about USD 19.53), and the day totals USD 94.95 to USD 139.53. None of the three fares covers a flight to Labuan Bajo, a tip for the crew or a drone permit - budget those on top. 6, 7, 8, 4, 5

Can I snorkel in Komodo without booking a tour?

One site only: a Sebayur Island resort's house reef is walkable from its beach, about a kilometre of reef with no boat needed. Every other named site, Manta Point, Mawan, Siaba Besar, Pink Beach and the Tatawas, lies inside the park and is reachable only by boat. Gear rents separately from a tour: Bajo Rental in Labuan Bajo charges IDR 40,000 a day, about USD 2.23, with free port pickup, and park entry runs through the SiOra platform or a licensed operator either way. 9, 16, 17, 5

What happens when the day boat stops at Batu Bolong for the divers?

Snorkelers wait on the boat or move on to the next stop on the schedule while the divers go down - Batu Bolong itself is closed to snorkelers under a 2019 rule, and two independent operators describe the same strong, unpredictable down-currents and eddies as the reason. Ask your operator which site fills that slot before you book, since a six-stop itinerary treats it as dead time otherwise. 10, 9, 14

How big are the manta rays in Komodo?

Reef mantas, the resident species you meet at Manta Point and Mawan, run three to four metres across the wings. Oceanic mantas reach seven metres and over two tonnes, but show up far less often, mainly at sites exposed to deep ocean water in the park's south during cooler months. 3

Is September a good month to snorkel in Komodo?

The two operators this page draws on do not agree. A Sebayur Island resort's table calls September 25°C water, 15 to 25 m visibility and 'excellent conditions' on the rising edge of the manta season. A dive operator's calendar puts the same month inside the reef-manta reproduction dip, when central sites can drop to one to five mantas a dive. Neither publishes a count for the specific week you book, so ask your operator what it has been seeing. 9, 21, 22

What happens if I break the park's rules in the water?

Balai Taman Nasional Komodo's visitor protocol sets the penalty: a six-month blacklist from Komodo and every other Indonesian conservation area, plus a possible immigration referral for a foreign visitor. The same document does not say who flags a violation in the moment or how a barred visitor is notified - only your guide, bound by the same rules, can tell you how it plays out on the water. 2
