Manuel Antonio on a budget: food, buses and stays in Quepos

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

What a day on Costa Rica's busiest park strip costs from a Quepos base, priced in September 2026 from the fares, the decree and the riders who paid.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The local bus from Quepos to the park gate costs CRC 320 to 380 each way. Two riders recorded the fare two years apart, 60 colones apart. Cash to the driver, small bills. 2, 3
  • The park ticket is the one fixed cost: USD 18.08 per adult, USD 5.65 per child aged 2 to 12, sold online only through the government portal. The park closes every Tuesday. 4, 5
  • Playa Espadilla Norte is free and sits outside the gate. Espadilla Sur is the same strip of coast inside the park, about 30 minutes' walk in on the same ticket. 6
  • A day on the free beach from Quepos runs CRC 13,140 at the low end: the bus both ways, a casado lunch and a soda dinner. Take the top of every range and it reaches CRC 19,260. 2, 7
  • Green season, June to October, is the price lever. The rains on this coast begin between 2 and 10 May and end between 6 and 23 November. 8, 9

Start in Quepos, not on the park road

The cheap bed and the park gate sit at opposite ends of one bus route. Manuel Antonio is the road that runs out to Costa Rica's most visited national park, 478,000 people through it in 2023. Quepos is the working town at the other end, with the bus terminal, the municipal market and the sodas. The ride between the two takes 15 to 25 minutes and costs CRC 320 to 380. 10, 2, 3

That ride is the whole trick of this page. Sleep in Quepos. Eat where the town eats. Take the first bus up in the morning and the last one back at night. The park ticket costs the same either way, and a bed three kilometres from a view competes on price with other beds, which changes the number at the end of the week.

Everything below was priced in September 2026: the fares from the operators and the riders who paid them, the entrance fee from the decree that sets it, the season dates from the national weather institute. Colón figures stand on their own dates. 1, 9

How much does Manuel Antonio cost per day?

One day from a Quepos base, in colones, with the park ticket shown separately because the park charges it in dollars.

A beach day from Quepos runs CRC 13,140 at the low end. That buys the local bus both ways at CRC 320, a casado lunch at CRC 4,500 and a soda dinner at CRC 8,000. Take the top of every range and the same day costs CRC 19,260. The gap between them is CRC 6,120, and nearly all of it is food. 2, 7

Park entry is charged in dollars and sits outside this table: USD 18.08 per adult and USD 5.65 per child aged 2 to 12 through the portal. Colón and dollar figures each stay in their own currency here, because the Federal Reserve's daily exchange-rate release carries no colón rate and this page applies no conversion of its own. 4, 11

Food is CRC 12,500 of the CRC 13,140. Buy breakfast and fruit at the Quepos market and the day drops by thousands; the bus is the smallest line on the page. Source: 7, 2

The entrance fee is the one price nobody talks down. The decree sets it at USD 16 for a non-resident and CRC 1,600 for a resident; the portal charges USD 18.08 for an adult once tax is added. Book a Wednesday through a Monday, because the park closes every Tuesday and opens 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. the rest of the week. 1, 4, 5

What does the bus from San José to Quepos cost?

Four prices exist for the same ride, and they sit within CRC 920 of each other. Tracopa's direct San José to Quepos bus is quoted at CRC 4,455 to 5,375 and takes three to four hours. The regulator's authorized fare for that route is CRC 5,130. Two buses through Jacó add up to CRC 4,605. 12, 13

How do you get from Quepos to the park gate?

The local bus costs CRC 320 to 380 and runs from before dawn. It leaves the Quepos terminal at 5:45 a.m., then 6:45 a.m., then roughly on the hour and the half hour until 7 p.m., with late runs at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The fare is flat whatever distance you ride. It sets you down at the end of the road beside Playa Espadilla Norte, two minutes' walk from the main entrance. 2, 3

The 2026 account has the bus starting at 5:45 a.m. and running to 9:30 p.m.; a 2024 rider recorded a 5:30 a.m. start and gaps of about 15 minutes. Return buses to Quepos pick up outside the Super Joseth supermarket near Restaurant Marlin. 2, 3

  1. Book the ticket the night before

Entry sells online only, through the government reservation portal, at USD 18.08 for an adult and USD 5.65 for a child aged 2 to 12. Pick any day but Tuesday. 5, 4

  2. Eat in Quepos first

The park bans outside food and drink beyond a short list of exceptions, so breakfast happens in town. A soda plate or fruit from the market costs a fraction of anything sold at the gate. 15, 7

  3. Take the 5:45 a.m. or the 6:45 a.m. bus

Gates open at 7 a.m. and the daily cap is 2,500 people, raised from 1,800 in 2024. The early bus puts you at the entrance ahead of the day tours. 2, 4, 10

  4. Carry small colón bills

The driver takes cash and works from a small float. A CRC 320 fare and a CRC 10,000 note make a slow start to the morning. 2

  5. Walk in from the drop-off

The bus stops at the end of the road by the free beach. The main entrance is two minutes away on foot. 2

Which Manuel Antonio beach is free?

Playa Espadilla Norte costs nothing. It runs along the north side of the strip, outside the park boundary, public and ticket-free, with bars, restaurants and beach vendors behind it. The local bus drops you at the top of it. A whole day there costs the ride and whatever you eat. 6, 2

Playa Espadilla Sur is the same coastline behind a ticket. It lies inside the park on the south side, about 30 minutes' walk from the entrance, calmer and clear of vendors. That quiet costs USD 18.08 per adult, which is the honest way to think about the fee: you are buying the walk and the forest, with a beach at the end. 6, 4

Which Quepos restaurants fit a budget?

A soda is the answer and a casado is the order. Sodas are the small family kitchens that serve one plate properly: a main, rice, beans, salad and a drink. Nationally a casado lunch runs CRC 4,500 to 7,500 with sales tax and gratuity already in the price. An evening plate of steak or fresh fish runs CRC 8,000 to 11,000. 7

Both figures include the sales tax and the gratuity, which Costa Rican restaurants add to the menu price. These are national ranges from a tour operator's cost guide. No soda in Quepos or Manuel Antonio publishes its own menu online, so read the board at the door and expect a price inside this band. The dollar figures are the source's own, not a conversion made on this page.

Where are the cheap hotels in Manuel Antonio?

The cheap beds are in Quepos, not on the park road. So the lever here is location, and it points back down the road to Quepos. Costa Linda Art Hostel is the exception worth naming: it sits about 100 metres from the park entrance and two minutes from the beach, described by the one firsthand account available as the only budget lodging in Manuel Antonio town itself. Ask for tonight's rate in writing before you count on it. 16

No hostel on this strip publishes a current nightly rate, so get tonight's price in writing before you count on it. 16

  • Price the green season. June to October brings the heaviest afternoon rain and the softest lodging demand, with September and October the wettest months. The rains begin between 2 and 10 May and end between 6 and 23 November. 8, 9
  • Compare on the total, not the nightly rate. A CRC 320 bus each way buys back a lot of room-rate difference across three nights, and it puts the market and the sodas at your door.
  • Get the rate by email. Prices on this coast move with the season and with whichever aggregator you booked through. A written quote is a number someone can be held to.
  • Let the trip decide the stop. The two-week Costa Rica itinerary and the full two-week cost show how many nights this coast is worth against the rest of the country.

When is the cheapest time to go?

The rain is the discount. Costa Rica's weather institute gives this coast a rainy season that starts between 2 and 10 May and ends between 6 and 23 November. December to April is dry, busy and dearest. May and November sit in between, with thinner crowds and lower prices, and heavy rain here is an afternoon habit more than an all-day one. 9, 8

Tuesday is the day to spend somewhere else. The park closes every Tuesday, opens 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. the rest of the week, and admits 2,500 people a day, up from 1,800 before 2024. A wet Tuesday in Quepos is a market morning, a laundry run and a long lunch. 4, 10

One habit saves more than any booking trick: colones in small bills. Drivers take cash and carry a small float, and the fare goes up over the years while the note in your pocket stays the same size. Draw colones in Quepos town, and read ATM fees abroad first. For the days either side of this stop, the Costa Rica travel guides cover the rest of the coast.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Manuel Antonio tickets at the gate?

No. Entry sells online only, through SINAC's reservation portal. The portal price is USD 18.08 per adult and USD 5.65 per child aged 2 to 12 with tax, and the decree behind it sets a base fee of USD 16 for non-residents and CRC 1,600 for residents. 5, 4, 1

Is there a direct bus from San José to Manuel Antonio?

The direct Tracopa bus runs to Quepos, quoted at CRC 4,455 to 5,375 for three to four hours, and the local Quepos bus covers the last stretch to the park road for CRC 320 to 380. Buy the long-distance ticket at the terminal window and pay the local driver in cash. 12, 2, 3

How late does the last bus back to Quepos run?

A 2026 account puts the last departure from Manuel Antonio at 9:30 p.m., picking up outside the Super Joseth supermarket near Restaurant Marlin, with services roughly on the hour and half hour until 7 p.m. and a run at 8 p.m. Confirm the evening times with the driver on the way up. 2

Can I bring my own lunch into the park?

Only within a short list added in February 2023: bottled water, packaged fruit, a sandwich or diet-specific food, each in a reusable container within a stated limit. Leave the wildlife alone too: feeding it is illegal under Costa Rica's wildlife law, though this page could not confirm a current fine amount. 15

Do I need a ticket for Playa Espadilla?

For Espadilla Norte, no. It is public, free and outside the gate, with bars and vendors along it. Espadilla Sur sits inside the park, about 30 minutes' walk in, and needs the park ticket at USD 18.08 per adult. 6, 4

What is the cheapest full day in Manuel Antonio?

A day on the free beach from Quepos runs CRC 13,140 at the low end, before the bed. Go into the park itself and the same day adds USD 18.08 per adult on top. Add the bed for the full number you will actually pay. 2, 7, 4

Is parking free near the park?

Roadside parking near Playa Espadilla is free by law. The men in safety vests who offer to watch a car are informal, and about CRC 3,000 a day is the top of a fair tip. Parking inside a private lot is a real paid service with a real price. 6

Is the green season worth it for a budget trip?

For a reader chasing price, yes. June to October brings the heaviest afternoon rain and the softest demand, September and October wettest of all, and the rains run from early May to the second half of November. The park opens at 7 a.m., which puts a morning visit ahead of the weather. 8, 9, 4
