Seminyak vs Canggu vs Kuta: which base in south Bali

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Kuta Beach, the closest of the three bases to Ngurah Rai airport and the cheapest transfer. 1, 2 · Kambui · Source · CC BY 2.0

What each of the three costs to reach, what its water does, and who it suits, priced from the operators' own pages on 25 or 26 September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The same operator charges IDR 150,000 to Kuta and IDR 300,000 to Seminyak, about USD 8.37 and USD 16.74. Exactly double, and the Seminyak run is only 10 to 12 km. 2, 3, 4
  • Canggu is the slow one. Its best case from the airport is 40 minutes and its worst is 90, and one operator's own page gives three distances for the route: 14 km, 18 km and 21 km. 5
  • Canggu is also the only base of the three with desk prices on a website: IDR 299,000 for a day at BWork, IDR 1,350,000 a month for 50 hours at Tropical Nomad. 6, 7
  • Kuta is the beginner's water. Its forecast page calls it a beach break, rates it 2 out of 10 and names no hazards. Canggu is a reef break rated 3, with rips and rocks. 1, 8
  • A scooter, a driver, a ride-hailing fare and the province's levy cost the same at all three addresses: from IDR 1,850,000 for 30 days, USD 40 a day, IDR 2,000 to 2,500 per km, and IDR 150,000 once. Decide those before you pick a base. 9, 10, 11, 12

Three neighbors, three different trips

Kuta Beach lies 4 km from Bali's airport in a straight line, and its waves rate 2 out of 10 for power. 1 Drive north and Seminyak's beach clubs start, with a temple and a street of restaurants behind them. Keep going and the road thins into Canggu, where the break turns to reef and the cafes fill with laptops. One strip of coast. Three very different weeks.

The choice lands on two lines of your budget: what the ride from the plane costs, and how long you sit in traffic every time you leave the house. On one operator's own price list, Kuta is IDR 150,000 and Seminyak is IDR 300,000 for a car. Double the fare, and the Seminyak run is only 10 to 12 km. 2, 3

Every figure below was read on 25 or 26 September 2026 on the page that owns it: three transfer operators' price lists, a surf forecast reference, a surf school, a beach club, two coworking spaces, a rental agency and Bali's own levy notice. Rupiah first. Dollars at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate for 25 September 2026, IDR 17,917 to USD 1. 4

How much does the airport transfer cost to each base?

Three named operators' own published fares, read on 25 and 26 September 2026.

The cheapest published ride goes to Kuta and the priciest goes to Canggu. Kuta Transport charges IDR 150,000 for one to five people in a minivan to Kuta, Legian, Jimbaran or Tuban, with 21% government tax and service included, and puts the drive at 20 to 45 minutes. Its Seminyak page asks IDR 300,000. A third operator, Bali Rent Scooter, undercuts that on Seminyak at IDR 175,000 and charges IDR 225,000 to Canggu. 2, 3, 13

Arriving and leaving costs twice the fare: IDR 300,000 from Kuta, IDR 350,000 from Seminyak, IDR 450,000 from Canggu. Kuta Transport's Seminyak fare of IDR 300,000 each way would make that base the dearest of the three at IDR 600,000 return, so ask which operator your hotel is booking. Source: 2, 13

Bali's transfer market has no single price. The same 10 to 12 km run to Seminyak is IDR 300,000 on one list and IDR 175,000 on another. A premium chauffeur service on the Canggu route starts at USD 180 for a Toyota Alphard and climbs to USD 870 for a 14 seat Sprinter. Ask for the fare in rupiah, in writing, before the car moves. 3, 13, 5

Kuta: closest to the plane, softest waves

Kuta is the easy landing. The airport sits 4 km away in a straight line, the fare is the lowest of the three, and the water in front of you is an exposed beach break with reliable surf that its own forecast page rates 2 out of 10. May to October is the best stretch for waves. Around 2% of the year the swell reads too small for most surfers, and beginners still get a ride out of it. 1, 2

That soft water has a price list attached. Odyssey Surf School has taught here since 2003, from the Mercure Hotel Arcade about 10 metres off the sand, with lessons from IDR 455,000, about USD 25.39. Its free pickup covers registered addresses in Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Sanur and Nusa Dua, and stops short of Canggu. Lessons run twice a day and pause for Nyepi, the day Bali's Balinese Hindu community keeps across the island. 15, 4

  • A first night off a long flight. The shortest transfer of the three, 20 to 45 minutes by the operator's own estimate. 2
  • A first surf lesson. A beach break rated 2 out of 10, with no hazard named on its forecast page, and a school on the sand from IDR 455,000. 1, 15
  • A last night before a morning flight. The same short ride back, at the same IDR 150,000. 2

Seminyak: beach clubs and a fare that doubles

Surf running up the flat sand of Seminyak Beach with a headland visible far down the coast under a hazy sky
Seminyak Beach, looking toward the Bukit peninsula. The beach club scene runs behind this sand, and the airport fare here is double Kuta's on the same operator's list. 2, 3 · Schweigeblick · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

Seminyak buys you an evening and charges for the ride. A Bali transfer operator that works the route describes it as a long-standing magnet for Europeans, expats and jetsetters, known for stylish beach clubs, villas and dining, and names Petitenget Beach, Eat Street and Petitenget Temple as its landmarks. Surfers there use Double Six Beach, on the Kuta side. 3

The run from the airport is 10 to 12 km, and 20 to 60 minutes depending on the hour. A second operator's own table puts the same trip at 12 km and 25 to 40 minutes. Either way you are in the villas within an hour of the carousel. 3, 5

The beach club arithmetic is printed at one address, at least. Potato Head charges an IDR 200,000 cover between 4pm and 6:30pm, about USD 11.16, redeemable against selected drinks. Outside that window entry is free, with open seating and no minimum spend, and it fills fast. The club states it has no dress code and welcomes families and pets. 16, 4

Canggu: the work base, and the ride that fights back

Canggu is three villages doing three jobs. A transfer operator's own guide splits it into Berawa, closest to the airport and thick with beach clubs including Atlas, La Brisa and Finns; Echo Beach and Batu Bolong, the surf end further north; and Pererenan and Kayutulang, quieter and furthest out. The water is an exposed reef break rated 3 out of 10, with rips and rocks named as hazards, and it gets crowded when the surf is up. 5, 8

It is also the one base of the three with desks you can price from a website. 7, 6

Nothing comparable is published in Kuta or Seminyak. MMT's remote-work budget worksheet prices the data plan and the backup desk that sit around that membership.

Staying a month changes the shape of the bill. A Canggu agency's live listings run from IDR 16,875,000 a month, about USD 942, for a one-bedroom apartment in Berawa, up to IDR 95,000,000 for a new three-bedroom villa. Whole villas price by the night at the top end: Villa Moana quoted USD 575 to USD 635 for late September 2026 dates, tax and service included. Weigh those against a hotel with MMT's monthly stay worksheet. 18, 19, 4

How bad is the traffic, and is the tram coming?

Badung Regency counts two registered vehicles for every resident. Its transportation agency reported 1,000,000 registered vehicles against an official population of 500,000 in April 2026, and its acting head said a 15 minute run can take an hour and a half at peak. Traffic engineering landed in Seminyak and Kerobokan Kelod first. Canggu Village and Berawa are on the list for later. 20

ItemClear roads (minutes)Peak traffic (minutes)
Kuta20 minutes45 minutes
Seminyak20 minutes60 minutes
Canggu40 minutes90 minutes

Canggu's best case, 40 minutes, is close to Kuta's worst. The Seminyak row comes from the operator that charges IDR 300,000 for that route; a second operator's table puts the same run at 25 to 40 minutes. Source: 2, 3, 5

The bad hours are predictable. The same Canggu page names 4pm to 8pm daily plus all day Saturday, and lists three routes a local driver picks between in the moment: through Kuta and Tuban, along Sunset Road and the Sanur bypass, or over the Bali Mandara toll road, where a car pays IDR 14,000 and a motorcycle IDR 5,500. Kuta and Seminyak sit on the shorter, untolled side of that map. 5, 21

What costs the same wherever you stay?

Four of the biggest lines in a Bali month ignore your address. Bali's levy, a scooter, a car with a driver and a ride-hailing fare are priced islandwide by the province, the operators and a ministry decree. Settle those figures first; they carry across all three bases. Entry and the levy are Indonesia-wide questions, and MMT's Indonesia guide covers the arrival. 12, 9, 10, 11

The dollar column is MMT arithmetic at IDR 17,917 to USD 1, Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate for 25 September 2026, except the car and driver line, which Bali Travelo prices in USD itself. The motorcycle taxi figures are the government's floor and ceiling, with a minimum fare of IDR 8,000 to 10,000 covering the first 4 km; the figure you pay is the app's own estimate. 4, 11

One local difference hides in the fine print. A scooter rental operator names Canggu, Seminyak and Legian, plus the roads into Ubud, as the places its customers meet police checkpoints, and puts the usual fine for missing documents at IDR 500,000, about USD 27.91. Kuta is absent from that list. One rental company's map of where it sees checkpoints is not a map of where they are. Carry an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle endorsement. 23, 4

Where should you stay in south Bali?

Pick the base that matches your week, then book the ride. All three sit on the same coast, so the decision comes down to the airport run, the water and what you do at 10am on a Tuesday. 2, 1, 8

Fares are the lowest each base carries on a named operator's own list on 25 and 26 September 2026; Kuta Transport asks IDR 300,000 for Seminyak. Drive times are the operators' own ranges. Dollar figures are MMT arithmetic at the JISDOR rate for 25 September 2026. 3, 4

  1. Pay the levy before you fly

IDR 150,000 per person, once, the same figure whichever base you pick. It has been in force since 14 February 2024. 12

  2. Book the transfer at a named fare

Get the rupiah price from the operator's own page: IDR 150,000 to Kuta, IDR 175,000 to Seminyak, IDR 225,000 to Canggu on the lists read on 25 and 26 September 2026. 2, 13

  3. Match the landing hour to the traffic

Arriving between 4pm and 8pm, or any time on Saturday, puts you in Badung's worst hours. A Canggu run then can take 90 minutes. 5, 20

  4. Sort wheels on day two, once you know the street

A scooter month starts at IDR 1,850,000 and a car with a driver at USD 40 a day, the same from all three bases. Carry the International Driving Permit. 9, 10, 23

Split a long stay if the budget allows it: a night in Kuta off the plane, a stretch of evenings in Seminyak, then Canggu with a desk and a reef in the morning. When the beach clubs have had enough of you, go east. MMT's guide to Amed for a diving month prices the quiet coast where the water is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in south Bali on a first trip?

Kuta for the first night and the first lesson, then move. It has the shortest airport run of the three at 20 to 45 minutes, the cheapest published fare at IDR 150,000, and a beach break rated 2 out of 10 for power with no hazard listed on its forecast page. 2, 1

Canggu or Seminyak: which suits a month?

Canggu, if you work. It is the one base of the three with desk prices published on the spaces' own sites, from IDR 299,000 a day at BWork to IDR 3,300,000 for an unlimited month at Tropical Nomad. Seminyak wins on the airport run and on evenings out, where Potato Head's cover is IDR 200,000 between 4pm and 6:30pm. 6, 7, 16

How far is Canggu from the airport?

One operator's own page gives three answers: 14 km as the crow flies, about 18 km by road, and 21 km in its own summary table, at 40 to 90 minutes. A surf forecast reference puts the straight line at 10 km. Budget the time and treat any single distance figure as loose. 5, 8

Does the airport transfer price vary between operators?

By a lot. Seminyak is IDR 300,000 on Kuta Transport's list and IDR 175,000 on Bali Rent Scooter's, for the same 10 to 12 km. Kuta Transport's price covers one to five people with tax and service included; a big van for five to ten runs IDR 750,000 on the same list. Ask which one is being booked before the car moves. 3, 13, 2

Do I need a scooter in Canggu?

Something with wheels, yes. A 30 day scooter rental starts at IDR 1,850,000 with DC Rental Bali, and a car with a driver runs from USD 40 a day with Bali Travelo, both serving all three areas. Checkpoints in Canggu, Seminyak and Legian look for an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement, and the usual fine is IDR 500,000. 9, 10, 23

What does the Bali tourist levy cost?

IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, once, in force since 14 February 2024, and identical in Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. Budget it with the visa, apart from the base decision. 12

Will the new airport tram help my trip?

No. It is a planned line with no public timetable beyond the target years, so book the transfer for the road you will actually drive. The agreement was signed 1 September 2026, but groundbreaking is not due until March 2027 and the full line to Canggu not until 2029. 22

Which beach is better for learning to surf?

Kuta. Its forecast page describes an exposed beach break with reliable surf, rates it 2 out of 10 and names no hazard, while Canggu is a reef break rated 3 with rips and rocks. Odyssey Surf School, on the Kuta sand since 2003, starts lessons at IDR 455,000, about USD 25.39. 1, 8, 15, 4
