Three beaches, three different arrivals
The three sit within a few kilometres of each other on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, and each one asks something different of you. Melasti takes your car down a paved canyon to the sand. Padang Padang takes your ticket, then your knees, down a staircase through a cleft in the limestone. Bingin takes a clifftop parking fee and a walk past hilltop guesthouses to stairs a community rebuilt by hand. 6, 10, 1
Padang Padang is 110 metres of fine white sand between tall cliffs, known locally as Labuan Sait, in Pecatu, about 3 km southwest of Bingin. It opens daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it was a filming location for Eat Pray Love in 2010. 11, 10
Everything below was read from the beaches' own fee listings, Bali news reporting and government pages on 25 September 2026, with rupiah converted at Bank Indonesia's reference rate for that day. Where a figure stayed unconfirmed, it says so and the item moves to the checklist at the end. 7
What does a day at the Uluwatu beaches cost?
Entrance and parking as each beach listed them, with rupiah converted at Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 25 September 2026.
One adult on a scooter can see all three for IDR 40,000, about USD 2.23. Bingin takes IDR 5,000 for motorbike parking and nothing at the sand. Padang Padang takes IDR 15,000 a head plus a flat IDR 2,000 for the lot opposite the entrance. Melasti takes IDR 15,000 a head plus IDR 3,000 for a motorbike. Bring cash in small notes. 1, 3, 4, 5, 7
| Beach | Adult entry (IDR) | Motorbike parking (IDR) | Car parking (IDR) | One adult on a scooter (IDR) | One adult on a scooter (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bingin | none charged | 5,000 | 10,000 | 5,000 | 0.28 |
| Padang Padang | 15,000 | 2,000 flat, any vehicle | 2,000 flat, any vehicle | 17,000 | 0.95 |
| Melasti | 15,000 | 3,000 | 5,000 | 18,000 | 1.00 |
| All three in one day, scooter | 30,000 | 10,000 | 17,000 | 40,000 | 2.23 |
By car the same loop is IDR 47,000, about USD 2.62 - the car parking column is an alternative to the motorbike column, not an addition. Padang Padang's rate is the international one; Melasti's source lists a single adult rate. Children pay IDR 10,000 at Padang Padang and IDR 3,000 at Melasti; Melasti also lists IDR 10,000 for a minibus and IDR 15,000 for a bus or truck. Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar, 25 September 2026. Bingin's parking is charged even though the sand itself is free.
Table view: What each beach costs one adult on a scooter
| Item | Value (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Melasti | 18,000 IDR |
| Padang Padang | 17,000 IDR |
| Bingin | 5,000 IDR |
Bingin is the cheapest because it sells no ticket. That is also the problem: the village of Pecatu has asked for official tourist-attraction status so a formal fee can fund proper access. The whole loop is IDR 40,000, about USD 2.23. Source: 3, 4, 1, 5, 12
Bingin Beach: free sand, community stairs
Bingin is the one you climb down to for nothing. No road reaches the sand. You leave the scooter at the clifftop lot, follow the signs into a paved alleyway past hilltop guesthouses, and take stairs that fork partway down; every fork lands on the shoreline. 1
That path is the story of the past year. After Badung's government demolished unauthorised clifftop buildings in 2025, the formal way down was lost, and surfers and residents built an emergency staircase themselves. I Made Sumerta, the Bendesa Adat of Pecatu, described the access as back to how it was in the 1970s. As of May 2026 the permanent replacement had still to be built. 2, 12

The Bingin Board Riders, about 80 adult members by the count of its chair Mega Semadhi, is pressing for a government-built staircase, and the village wants official attraction status so a formal fee can pay for it. Overnight stays have fallen since the demolition took the local accommodation with it. Day visits carried on. 2, 12
The reef is why people swim here. A fringing reef takes the force out of the swell and the waves barely reach the sand, which makes Bingin the easiest of the three for a float. The same reef shapes the break offshore: it works year-round and is at its best in those same dry months, though this beach's own guide narrows that window to May through October. 1
Facilities are thin on purpose. Toilets are inside the restaurants at the bottom; the beach has no changing rooms or showers of its own. An umbrella runs IDR 100,000 for a few hours and a surfboard IDR 150,000 for two. 1
How much is the Padang Padang entrance fee?
IDR 15,000 for an international adult, IDR 10,000 for an international child aged 3 to 10, cash only. Domestic visitors pay IDR 10,000 and IDR 5,000. The booth sits at the top of the stairs, and the lot opposite charges a flat IDR 2,000 for a scooter or a car for the day. Those rates were last printed on the operator's fee page on 27 December 2025. 3, 4
| Visitor | Entry (IDR) |
|---|---|
| International adult | 15,000 |
| International child, 3 to 10 | 10,000 |
| Domestic adult | 10,000 |
| Domestic child, 3 to 10 | 5,000 |
Cash only, at the booth above the stairs. Parking is a flat IDR 2,000 for any vehicle. Rates as listed on 27 December 2025.
Then you climb down. The path drops through a narrow cleft in the limestone, past a temple, and squeezes between a fallen rock and the cliff face before it opens onto the sand. The two sources that publish a step count disagree: Wikipedia says 120, a visitor guide describing the same route says about 50. Either count rules the descent out for wheels. 11, 10
The break is why surfers come, and why swimmers should read the tide. Padang Padang Left is a shallow left-hand reef break nicknamed the Balinese Pipeline, and the site of the annual Rip Curl Cup. It works best at high tide. At low tide the coral sits close under your feet, which is the same reason a water-safety guide lists this stretch among the island's sharper reef bottoms. 11, 9, 10
Melasti Beach: the one you can drive down to
A road carved through the cliff drops you at beach level. Jalan Melasti leaves the main Bukit roads and winds down a canyon with sheer limestone walls on both sides to a parking area near the sand. From there the beach is flat ground. That makes it the obvious pick with a pram, a cooler, or a knee that objects to a staircase. 6

Entry is IDR 15,000 for an adult and IDR 3,000 for a child, last verified on the operator's fee page on 2 January 2026. Parking runs IDR 3,000 for a motorcycle, IDR 5,000 for a car, IDR 10,000 for a minibus and IDR 15,000 for a bus or truck. The Kecak dance ticket sold at Melasti is a separate purchase from the beach ticket. 5
The water suits swimmers. Sand underfoot and a gradual slope make it gentler than the reef beaches around it. In the dry season, roughly April to October, the water here is clearest in the morning before the wind picks up. Afternoon winds and bigger swell change that within hours, so read the water before you walk in. Toilets, changing rooms, warungs and chair rental are all on site; shade is scarce. 6
Which Uluwatu beach is best for swimming?
Bingin first, Melasti second, Padang Padang for surfers. The reasons differ. Bingin has a reef that flattens the swell before it lands. Melasti has sand and a gentle slope. Padang Padang has coral at ankle depth when the tide drops, and a break that experienced surfers travel for. 1, 6, 9
| Beach | Getting to the sand | Steps | Bottom | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bingin | Clifftop parking, paved alleyway, community-built stairs | Count unpublished | Fringing reef, calm close in | Swimming and a long lunch |
| Padang Padang | Ticket booth, then a staircase through a cleft and cave | 120 (Wikipedia) or about 50 (visitor guide) | Shallow reef, coral exposed at low tide | Surfing at high tide |
| Melasti | Paved cliff road to a car park at beach level | None | Sand, gradual depth | Families and swimmers, mornings |
The two published step counts for Padang Padang conflict and neither is an official figure. Bingin's stair count is not published anywhere.
Plan the swim as though the water is unsupervised. Lifeguard staffing and flag systems at these three beaches are not published, and the reef beaches on this coast hide coral and rock under the surface at high tide. Shoes you can swim in solve half of that. 9
How do you see all three in one day?
Run it south to north and let the tide and the light do the sorting. Melasti is at its calmest and clearest in the morning, Bingin is the lunch stop, and Padang Padang closes at 7 p.m. 6, 10
Bingin for lunch
Park at the clifftop for IDR 5,000 and walk down. The warungs are at the bottom, the reef keeps the water calm, and there is no ticket to buy. Toilets are inside the restaurants. 1
The Kecak, if you leave early for it
Pura Luhur Uluwatu runs two sessions a night: the 6 p.m. one seats about 1,200 and usually fills, the 7 p.m. one draws 800 to 900. Traffic on the access road has pushed some first-session ticket holders into the second, and Badung is building about 2.5 hectares of new parking in 2026 to ease it. 15
- Cash in small notes. Padang Padang's booth takes cash only, and every parking attendant on this loop wants coins and small bills. 3
- Something on your feet. Coral sits close under the surface at Bingin and Padang Padang and is exposed when the tide drops. 9
- A sarong and sash if the day ends at the temple. Balinese temples set their own rules for dress and entry, and the Kecak at Pura Luhur Uluwatu is held on temple ground; ask what the temple asks of visitors that evening.
- Your Love Bali voucher. Tourism staff check it at destinations in the Uluwatu area, not only at the airport. 13
Getting there, including the boat that lands on the sand
A fast boat uses Padang Padang Beach itself as its Uluwatu terminal. GoBoat crosses from Canggu to Uluwatu in 35 minutes for IDR 255,000 a person, about USD 14.23, picking up at Nelayan Beach on the Canggu side and Padang Padang on this one, with more than 370 daily departures across its network. For anyone based north and coming down for a beach day, that is the alternative to the Bukit road. 16, 7
The road is the constraint the rest of the day bends around. Badung is adding about 2.5 hectares of parking outside the Uluwatu temple zone in 2026 because vehicle numbers into the area keep climbing. Build slack into any plan that ends at a booked show time. 15
Where you sleep decides how often you make this loop. Where to stay in Uluwatu compares the areas and their prices, Canggu for remote workers prices the other end of the boat, and Kuta answers whether the old strip still earns a night on the way through. The Indonesia guide covers arrival, the visa and the islands past Bali. If this reef gives you ideas, Amed for a diving month prices the quiet east coast.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an entrance fee at Bingin Beach?
No ticket is sold at Bingin. Parking at the clifftop costs IDR 10,000 for a car and IDR 5,000 for a motorbike, and that is the whole charge. Pecatu village has asked for official tourist-attraction status, which would bring a formal fee with it, so expect this to change. 1, 12
Can I pay the beach fees by card?
Bring rupiah in small notes for all three. Padang Padang's fee page names cash only, and no card option is published for Bingin's clifftop parking or Melasti's ticket window, so budget the day in cash before you set off. 3
What time do the beaches close?
Plan the last beach of the day around the light. Only Padang Padang publishes hours, and it shuts at 7 p.m.; Bingin and Melasti post no closing time, so daylight is the limit at both. 10
Which Uluwatu beach has no stairs?
Melasti. A paved road cut through the limestone canyon reaches a parking area at beach level, and the sand is on flat ground from there. Bingin and Padang Padang both need a stair descent from clifftop parking. 6, 1, 10
How many steps lead down to Padang Padang?
Two published counts disagree. Wikipedia says 120 steps; a visitor guide describing the same route says about 50. Neither figure comes from a government or park authority, and neither route suits wheels. Treat it as one flight through a cave and judge it on the day. 11, 10
Do I still pay the Bali tourist levy on top of beach fees?
Yes. The IDR 150,000 levy, about USD 8.37, is paid once per trip through Love Bali, and beach entrance and parking fees sit on top of it. Provincial tourism staff check the levy voucher at destinations including Uluwatu, so carry the code with you. 8, 13, 7
Can I reach Uluwatu's beaches by boat from Canggu?
Yes. GoBoat's Canggu to Uluwatu crossing takes 35 minutes and costs IDR 255,000 one way, about USD 14.23, and its Uluwatu pickup point is Padang Padang Beach itself. Book the return leg before you walk down the stairs. 16, 7
Are there lifeguards at Bingin, Padang Padang or Melasti?
Plan as though nobody is watching the water. No lifeguard service page for these three beaches could be confirmed, so treat every swim as unsupervised and read BMKG's forecast for the waters south of Bali before you get in. 14
