What laundry costs while traveling with one bag

The line item that makes one bag work

One town, two counters, 3.5 times the price - seven, if you are in a hurry. In Playa del Carmen, La Fregona prints a flat MXN 10.00 a kilogram to wash and dry. Another shop in the same town, Playa Del Carmen Laundry, asks MXN 35 a kilogram on about 24 hours and MXN 70 for its 3-to-5-hour express tier, both on a 4 kg minimum. Same clothes, same week. ^{1, 2}

That gap is the argument for a small wardrobe. A carry-on works when washing it is cheap and quick, and the whole plan turns on a price most travelers read for the first time at the counter, in a language they are still learning, on the afternoon they run out of shirts.

So here are the prices, read on 25 September 2026 from the shops' own pages, in four cities long-stay travelers actually base in: Playa del Carmen, Ubud, Medellín and San José. How much does laundry cost while traveling?

Six named shops in four cities, every figure read from the operator's own price page on 25 September 2026.

Drop-off laundry is priced three ways: by the kilogram, by the load, or by the ticket. Medellín and Playa del Carmen shops post a per-kilo rate. Ubud offers both. San José sells a 10 kg or 25 kg load, and sells self-service by the ficha, a token that buys one machine. ^{5, 2, 9, 4}

Read the tier, the minimum and the exclusions together, or the table lies to you. A low per-kilo rate with a 4 kg floor can cost more on a half-empty bag than a shop that charges by the load. The cheapest sticker on that table belongs to the shop that publishes the least about how it bills. ^{2, 1, 9}

What does speed cost?

Every shop that prices by turnaround charges a premium for hurry, and the premium is steep. Ubud TOP Laundry Express moves from Rp24,900 a kilogram at 12 hours to Rp59,900 at 2 hours. Emma Eco Laundry in Medellín goes from COP 16,000 a kilogram at 24 hours to COP 25,000 at 4 hours. ^{3, 5}

LAVA in San José prices the labor as well as the clock. Its self-service wash-and-dry ticket is CRC 4,800 for a 10 kg load, which works out at CRC 480 a kilogram. The same load handed to staff on 24-hour turnaround costs CRC 8,280, or 72.5 percent more, and CRC 13,110 at 90 minutes. ⁴

Playa del Carmen: the widest gap in one town

Mexico is the one country on this page with a central-bank rate to convert with. On Friday 18 September 2026 the dollar bought 17.2454 pesos, per the Federal Reserve's H.10 release of 21 September 2026. The dollar column below runs on that figure. ⁸

The minimum is the number to watch. Playa Del Carmen Laundry bills a 4 kg floor, so MXN 140 is the basic price whatever the bag weighs. Hand over 2 kg and the effective rate becomes MXN 70 a kilogram. At 3 kg it is MXN 46.67. The shop prints the conversion you need at the scale: 1 kilo is 2.2 pounds. ²

Ubud: per kilo or per load?

Ubud hands you both pricing models inside one subdistrict. Ubud TOP Laundry Express, on Jl. Raya Nyuh Kuning in Mas, charges by the kilogram and runs 24 hours a day, with free pickup and delivery across Ubud, Gianyar, Sukawati, Denpasar and Sanur. Washing, drying, ironing and folding sit inside the rate. ³

Swastee Eco Laundry prices by the load instead. Self-service is Rp30,000 to wash and Rp25,000 to dry a 1 to 5 kg load, on a 90-minute cycle, with coffee, tea and Wi-Fi thrown in. The same load dropped off for same-day service is Rp35,000 to wash and Rp30,000 to dry. ⁹

South Bali is a separate market, priced higher for speed. Balilaundry.com, serving Canggu, Kuta and Seminyak, charges Rp35,000 a kilogram for next-day service, Rp50,000 for 7-hour and Rp80,000 for 3-hour, on a 3 kg minimum with free pickup and delivery. CleanFold Bali in Canggu holds a Rp75,000 minimum order and adds 11 percent tax. ^{10, 11}

Medellín and San José: fewer printed prices

Emma Eco Laundry is the one Medellín shop on this page that prints a number at all. Wash by the kilo runs COP 16,000 for normal service with 24-hour delivery and COP 25,000 for express with 4-hour delivery. Both tiers include washing, drying and folding with biodegradable products. ⁵

A 3 kg minimum charge applies to each tier, so the smallest normal load bills at COP 48,000 and the smallest express load at COP 75,000. Delivery inside El Poblado is free. The price page carries its own date: last updated May 2026. ⁵

Limpio y Seco, another Medellín laundry advertising wash by the kilo with home pickup, routes you to a quote form instead of a rate. Several competitors in both cities work the same way, which makes one printed price look like the market rate when it is one shop's rate. ¹²

San José's published prices also come from a single operator. LAVA sells self-service wash-and-dry tickets and full-service loads at 24 hours or 90 minutes, by the 10 kg or 25 kg load. ⁴

Is a Scrubba wash bag worth it?

The sink has a price tag too, and you pay it once. The Scrubba Wash Bag sells for USD 59.95 on its maker's own store, and the smaller MINI for USD 46.00. A 3.4 oz bottle of Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile soap is USD 4.69, small enough for a liquids bag. ^{6, 7}

So the wash bag wins in the expensive town and loses in the cheap one. Eight loads is a month of weekly washes plus a few rinses, easily reached on a long trip through minimum-charge shops. Against a flat MXN 10.00 a kilogram it takes 37.2 loads, which is a year. Price the kit against the city you will spend the most weeks in. ^{6, 7, 2, 1}

   Weigh the bag before you choose the shop

   A 3 kg or 4 kg minimum sets the floor, so a half-full bag pays what a full one pays. Playa Del Carmen Laundry prints the conversion on its own price page: 1 kilo is 2.2 pounds. ^{2, 5}

   Take the slowest tier your week allows

   The jump from 12-hour to 2-hour service at Ubud TOP Laundry Express is 140.6 percent. Drop the bag on a night you are staying put and that premium stays in your pocket. ³

   LAVA's San José rates exclude IVA, soap, softener and dryer sheets. CleanFold Bali adds 11 percent tax on top of a Rp75,000 minimum order. ^{4, 11}

   Emma Eco Laundry delivers free inside El Poblado. Ubud TOP Laundry Express and Balilaundry.com both collect free. Playa Del Carmen Laundry charges MXN 80 flat inside a limited area. ^{5, 3, 10, 2}

How often should you wash on a one-bag trip?

The pricing model sets the rhythm, not the calendar. A flat per-kilo shop with no minimum charges the same for two small washes as for one big one, so wash when the shirts run low. A per-load or minimum-charge shop pays you to wait until the bag is full. ^{1, 9, 5}

• Flat per-kilo, no minimum: wash small and often. At La Fregona's MXN 10.00 a kilogram, a 2 kg wash is MXN 20 and a 3 kg wash is MXN 30. Splitting the load costs nothing. ¹
• A 3 or 4 kg floor: combine. Emma Eco Laundry's 3 kg minimum makes the smallest normal load COP 48,000 whatever it weighs, and Playa Del Carmen Laundry's 4 kg minimum makes it MXN 140. Two travelers washing together halve that per person. ^{5, 2}
• Per-load self-service: fill the drum. Swastee's Rp55,000 covers washing and drying anything from 1 to 5 kg, so 5 kg costs Rp11,000 a kilogram while 2 kg costs Rp27,500. ⁹
• Carrying a wash bag: rinse nightly, pay the shop monthly. The kit is USD 64.64 once, against MXN 140 every time you hand a small load over a counter in Playa del Carmen. ^{6, 7, 2}
