How to see Komodo dragons: Komodo Island or Rinca

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The two ranger stations where wild dragons are trekked, what the gate costs in September 2026 rupiah, and the places where the sources disagree.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Rinca is the short run and the confirmed price. Loh Buaya sits about 22 km from Labuan Bajo, 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat, and the park's own guide-service page sets the naturalist fee there at IDR 200,000 per group of five. 1, 2
  • Komodo Island costs you the morning. Loh Liang lies about 40 km out, roughly 2 hours by speedboat and 4 to 4.5 hours on a phinisi, which is why most one-day trips run to Rinca. 1
  • Budget IDR 290,000 a head for the gate and the guide, about USD 16 at Bank Indonesia's reference rate of IDR 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026. Diving inside the park adds IDR 25,000 per person per day. 3, 2, 4
  • Stay with the ranger. Of about 24 attacks documented from 1974 to 2012, five of them fatal, nearly all involved people at work in dragon habitat without an escort, not visitors walking behind a ranger. 5

Two ranger stations, two different mornings

Dragons live in two valleys a visitor can walk. Everything else on the boat itinerary is a beach, a reef or a viewpoint.

A resting dragon looks like part of the path until it moves. At Loh Liang on Komodo Island and at Loh Buaya on Rinca, park rangers walk small groups along marked trails through dry forest and savannah, and the animals are often thickest around the ranger station itself. Those two valleys are the only places in the park where you trek for wild Komodo dragons. 1, 6

The rest of a Komodo boat trip is dragon-free. Padar has no resident dragon population. Kelor, Kanawa, Sebayur, Siaba and Taka Makassar have none either. So the whole question comes down to one choice: Rinca, Komodo Island, or both. 1

The park covers 173,300 hectares, 114,801 of them water and 58,499 land, across at least 142 islands, five of which hold dragon habitat. UNESCO inscribed it in 1991 and puts the population at around 5,700 animals. 7, 8

The park's site publishes no naturalist-guide fee for Loh Liang. The cooperative that holds the guiding permit, KSU Taman Nasional Komodo, lists Loh Buaya and Gili Lawa Darat as its only two locations, so ask your operator what a Komodo Island guide costs and get the answer in writing. 2

Both islands carry villages that predate the park. Komodo village sits on Komodo Island's east coast, with Rinca village and Papagarang on their own shores, all inside traditional settlement zones written into the park's map. 1

Rinca vs Komodo island: which one should you pick?

One day out of Labuan Bajo favors Rinca. A boat with a night in it opens up Loh Liang.

Take Rinca if you have a day, Komodo Island if you have a boat and a night. Loh Liang sits nearly twice as far from Labuan Bajo as Loh Buaya, which adds about an hour each way on a speedboat and more than two hours each way on a phinisi. That is the whole argument, and it is why so many day-trip itineraries stop at Loh Buaya. 1

Rinca's speedboat figure is the top of the operator's 45-to-60-minute range and Komodo Island's phinisi figure the top of its 4-to-4.5-hour range. The operator describes these as the rounded numbers its crews use daily, and says real times shift with sea state, tide and vessel. Source: 1

  • One day, one island: Rinca. The 45-to-60-minute speedboat ride leaves room for a reef or a beach stop on the way home. 1
  • Two nights on a boat: both. Loh Liang in the early morning, Loh Buaya on the run back toward Labuan Bajo, with Padar between them for the viewpoint and no dragons at all. 1
  • Diving the park anyway: Rinca. The dragon trek becomes a half-day add-on instead of the day itself, and the diving ticket is a separate IDR 25,000 per person per day. 3

How long is the Komodo dragon trek, and how hard?

Short, medium and long are real labels. The hour figures attached to them come from operators, and they disagree.

Every trek time on the market comes from a tour company, because the park publishes none. Three sources give three sets of figures for the same named routes, and on Rinca's long loop they are 90 minutes apart. Book the label, ask the ranger for the clock. 10, 11, 6

Weight the first two columns above the third. The Adventure Indonesia page dates from 2019, gives both islands identical figures, and its body text runs into several paragraphs of unrelated garbled material, which reads as compromised content. None of the three is the park authority, and the park's own site carries no duration table.

The terrain descriptions agree where the times do not. The short loop stays flat near the ranger station, where dragons gather and sightings run highest. The medium route climbs through forest and savannah to a ridge with a view over the bay. The long loop adds hills, distance and a better chance of dragons away from the station, with less ranger cover out there. 6, 10

Ask for the medium trek unless the boat schedule squeezes you. On Rinca that is 4 km over two to two-and-a-half hours by the resort's figures, with water buffalo, wild horses, deer and raptors along the way. On Komodo Island it is about 3 km through a dry riverbed to a viewpoint above Loh Liang bay. 10

What does a Komodo dragon trek cost?

Two line items decide it: the government's entrance ticket and the cooperative's guide fee. Everything else is boat.

One person on a Rinca trek pays IDR 290,000 at the gate, about USD 16. That is the flat IDR 250,000 foreign entrance ticket plus a fifth of the IDR 200,000 guide fee, which the cooperative charges per group of up to five. Split four ways instead of five and the guide share rises. 3, 2, 4

The entrance ticket is 6.25 times the guide share. That ratio is why splitting a guide across a full group of five saves less than most travelers expect, and why the ticket price is the number worth confirming at the counter. Source: 3, 2, 12

Conservation charges at reef destinations work the same way almost everywhere, and they rarely appear in the headline price. The marine park and conservation fees worksheet is the place to slot Komodo's IDR 25,000 diving ticket into a wider dive budget. 3

Are Komodo dragons dangerous?

The recorded history says yes, and it also says who the victims were: people alone in dragon country, not visitors walking behind a ranger.

About 24 attacks were documented between 1974 and 2012, five of them fatal, a case-fatality rate near 21 percent. The pattern inside that record matters more than the total. Most victims were island residents at work in dragon habitat where they live, collecting firewood, fishing or walking alone, without the escort every visitor is given. No guided-tourist fatality appears in those 38 years. 5

The named cases sketch the same shape. A 74-year-old Swiss visitor who walked away from his group on Komodo Island in 1974 and was never found. An eight-year-old boy near Komodo village in 2007, the park's first fatality in the 33 years since. A local man who died in 2009 after falling from a tree into reach of two dragons. A construction worker bitten at a resort development site on Rinca in December 2020. 5, 13

The clearest documented incident involved a professional. In February 2013 a wire report named guide Abdul Rachman, bitten on the right calf by a 2.5-metre dragon that appeared near its nest while he led four Indonesian visitors, and recorded two park employees hospitalized in a separate attack two weeks earlier. The park official quoted said Rachman failed to hold the animal off with his stick. 14

  • Follow the ranger and the on-duty naturalist guide. The park's own visitor protocol makes ignoring their instructions, information, direction or prohibitions along the trekking route a violation. 15
  • Keep clear of every animal, on land and in the water. Touching wildlife or closing on it counts as a serious violation at any nature-tourism site in the park. 15
  • Stay on the marked trail and inside your entry window. Trekking off the trail, outside the zone or outside the park's timed visiting hours is a violation in its own right. 15
  • Walk in as a group. One safety guide records that solo visitor access to Komodo Island is prohibited and that rangers are trained to put themselves between a dragon and the people they are escorting. 6

Two safety details stay unsettled, so take your ranger's word on site. One source states a minimum 5-metre distance in its summary and 3 metres in its own rule table; the park's protocol sets no figure in metres and simply requires clearance. A resort blog describes Rinca's escort as an armed ranger while a safety guide records a forked wooden staff and no firearms. 6, 15, 10

How a ranger-led trek runs

The sequence is the same at both stations, and the ticket comes first. Fifty trained naturalist guides work for the cooperative that holds the guiding permit, drawn from communities in and around the park, and they hold that permit under a 2021 decree from the forestry ministry's conservation directorate. 2

  1. Buy the entrance ticket for the day

The foreign rate is IDR 250,000 per person per day, flat on weekdays and holidays since 30 October 2024. Diving the same day adds a separate IDR 25,000 ticket. 3

  2. Confirm your entry window

The park runs timed visiting hours, and trekking outside them counts as a violation. The published windows run from early morning through late afternoon, so ask your operator which window applies at Loh Buaya or Loh Liang. 15

  3. Meet the guide and settle the fee

At Loh Buaya on Rinca the cooperative charges IDR 200,000 per group of up to five people. Komodo Island carries no published figure, so agree the number before you walk. 2

  4. Pick short, medium or long

Short stays flat near the station where sightings run highest. Medium climbs to a ridge. Long adds hills and distance with thinner ranger cover. Ask for the time in hours from the ranger in front of you. 6, 10

  5. Walk where the guide puts you

Rangers position themselves between the group and any dragon - a safety guide describes a forked staff, an operator describes an armed ranger, so let the person in front of you set the distance - and the park expects nobody to feed wildlife. 6, 10, 16

One practical note on timing: the flat daily ticket means a second island on a second day costs another IDR 250,000 a head, about USD 13.95. Two islands in one day on one ticket is the cheaper route, and only a fast boat makes it possible. 3, 4, 1

Komodo village and the Ata Modo today

A fishing town of around 2,000 people shares the island with the dragons, and some of its residents are the park's rangers.

Komodo Island has a working village on its east coast, and it was there before the park was. The Indigenous people of the island call themselves Ata Modo, the Modo people, and the island Tana Modo. The English label Komodo people came from an anthropologist in 1989, from outside the community. 17, 1

Komodo village today is a fishing settlement of about 800 families, around 2,000 people at a 2019 count. Most residents fish. Some work as Komodo National Park rangers, which puts Ata Modo people among the staff running the trekking operation visitors book. 17

UNESCO's biosphere reserve page records Ata Modo people living in the reserve today, alongside resident Komodo, Bima and Manggarai communities and the Bajo and Bugis who came later. 9 Labuan Bajo, the gateway town, sits in West Manggarai Regency on Flores, in Manggarai country. 17

How does a dragon trek fit into a week in Komodo?

One dragon morning is usually enough, and the rest of the week is water. The park is two-thirds sea by area, 114,801 hectares of it, and the reefs are the reason most people stay more than two days. Slot the trek where the boat already passes a ranger station. 7

The conservation picture is worth carrying with you. The IUCN moved the Komodo dragon from Vulnerable to Endangered in 2021, working from an estimate of about 1,380 mature individuals and modelling that suitable habitat could shrink by at least 30 percent within 50 years as seas rise. That figure counts breeding-age animals, a narrower measure than UNESCO's roughly 5,700 total. 13, 8

Frequently asked questions

Which island is better for seeing Komodo dragons?

Rinca for a single day, Komodo Island if a boat gives you the morning. Loh Buaya on Rinca is about 22 km from Labuan Bajo, 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat, against about 40 km and roughly 2 hours to Loh Liang on Komodo Island. 1

How much is the ranger fee for a Komodo dragon trek?

IDR 200,000 per group of up to five people at Loh Buaya on Rinca and at Gili Lawa Darat, charged by KSU Taman Nasional Komodo, the cooperative that holds the park's guiding permit. That works out at IDR 40,000 a head in a full group, about USD 2.23. The park's site carries no equivalent published figure for Loh Liang on Komodo Island, so agree that price with your operator in advance. 2, 4

What is the park entrance ticket for a foreign visitor?

A flat IDR 250,000 per person per day, the same on weekdays and holidays, since the change took effect on 30 October 2024. At Bank Indonesia's reference rate of IDR 17,917 per dollar on 25 September 2026 that is about USD 13.95. Some operators bundle park charges into a higher multi-day figure than the government's published rate, so ask for the line-by-line breakdown. 3, 4

Can I trek Komodo National Park without a guide?

No. The park's visitor protocol requires visitors to follow the instructions of park staff and the on-duty naturalist guide along the trekking route, and treats leaving the marked trail or zone as a serious violation carrying a six-month ban. One safety guide records solo visitor access to Komodo Island as prohibited outright. 15, 6

How close can you get to a Komodo dragon?

Take the distance your guide gives you on the day. The park's own protocol requires clearance from wildlife with no figure in metres attached. One tourism safety guide states a 5-metre minimum in its summary and 3 metres in its rule table on the same page, so no single published number is settled. Rangers are trained to stand between a dragon and the group. 15, 6

How often do Komodo dragons attack people?

About 24 attacks were documented between 1974 and 2012, five of them fatal, roughly a 21 percent case-fatality rate among recorded attacks. Most victims were local residents alone in dragon habitat. The best-corroborated recent case is a February 2013 bite on a working tour guide near a nest, reported by a wire agency quoting a park official. 5, 14

What time of day do the dragon treks run?

The park operates timed visiting windows and treats entry outside them as a violation. The windows on its published page span early morning to late afternoon, and pair a morning slot with an afternoon slot, but that page leaves each window unlabeled by resort. Confirm the window for Loh Buaya or Loh Liang with your operator before the boat books a departure time. 15

Is there a fee to visit Komodo village?

A ticketing platform lists an IDR 20,000 one-day Desa Wisata Komodo ticket, about USD 1.12, swapped for a paper ticket at a cashier. Neither the village, its community tourism group nor the park authority publishes that figure, so carry it as a lead and ask on the island. Komodo village is a fishing town of about 800 families, some of whose residents work as park rangers. 12, 17, 4
