Three trips inland, and where each one stands
Around the middle of the day, a shaft of sunlight drops through a gap in the roof of Rangko Cave and lands on a pool of clear salt water. The cave sits about an hour north of Labuan Bajo by road, then 10 to 15 minutes by boat. Of the three inland trips people ask about most, this is the one running normally on 26 September 2026. 4, 8
The other two need a plan. Cunca Wulang, the river gorge in the hills west of town, has been closed to visitors since 25 May 2026, the day after a suspension bridge on its trail collapsed and two Austrian visitors died. 9 Wae Rebo, the Manggarai village of seven Mbaru Niang houses at about 1,200 metres, lies 5 to 6 hours of driving plus a long climb away. 1, 2, 3
So this page prices a day out of Labuan Bajo from the operators' own pages and the village's own fee list, read on 26 September 2026. Where sources conflict, both figures are here. Rupiah amounts convert at Rp 17,917 per US dollar, Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 25 September 2026. 10
| Trip | From Labuan Bajo | Who collects the money | Status on 26 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rangko Cave | About 1 hour by road, then a 10 to 15 minute boat | Local entry fee, the boat owner, your operator | Open, reported operating normally |
| Cunca Wulang | 1.5 to 2 hours by road west, then a 30 to 45 minute walk | Trailhead entrance fee and a local guide, in cash | Closed since 25 May 2026, reopening date open |
| Wae Rebo | 5 to 6 hours by road to Denge, then a 2 to 3 hour climb | The village, in cash, when you arrive | Contested; closed on 2 and 3 October for a ceremony |
Wae Rebo's current status is disputed between two named sources; the section below lays out both. Neither Cunca Wulang nor Rangko Cave has a published official tariff page, so the money column names who collects the cash instead of a single fee.
Is Cunca Wulang waterfall open?
Closed since May 2026, with the reopening in the regency's hands. Here is the trip it was, and the prices sources fight over.
No, and the closure carries an official date. On 24 May 2026 a suspension bridge at Cunca Wulang collapsed while two Austrian visitors, aged 55 and 56, were crossing it. Both died in the fall. West Manggarai Regency's tourism department closed all visits the next day by official letter, until a time to be determined later, pending a full evaluation of the site. 9
That evaluation is what sets the reopening date, so the answer comes from the regency, and no operator can grant it. Searches through 26 September 2026 turned up no reopening notice from the government or the local press. Treat the gorge as shut until West Manggarai's tourism office or a Labuan Bajo operator says otherwise on the day. 9
Here is the trip it was, for whenever it comes back. The drive runs 1.5 to 2 hours west toward Werang, by car or scooter. A guided walk of 30 to 45 minutes then crosses farmland and forest down to the water. What waits is a run of deep green pools between the gorge walls, with ledges above them. 13, 14
The dry season, roughly April to November, gives the clearer pools and the gentler current. After heavy rain the water rises and clouds over, and guides close the swimming or the whole gorge. Jumping from the ledges happens only where a guide confirms the depth that day, because the depth moves with the week's rainfall. 14
| Line | IDR | USD | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance, per person | 20,000 to 25,000 | 1.12 to 1.40 | A Labuan Bajo guesthouse's own guide |
| Entrance, per person | 130,000 to 210,000 | 7.26 to 11.72 | Independent visitor reports |
| Local guide at the trailhead | 50,000 to 100,000 | 2.79 to 5.58 | Both of the above |
| Full-day private car with an English-speaking driver-guide, per car | about 1,500,000 | 95, as quoted | Komodo Airport Transfer price list, 24 August 2026 |
No government or village tariff page for Cunca Wulang could be opened, and the village's own site shows no fee section. The two entrance figures differ by a factor of eight. The operator publishes USD 95 alongside its own rupiah approximation of IDR 1,500,000, which works out lower at the reference rate; USD 95 is the figure it quotes. Entrance and guide money is cash at the trailhead, on top of the car.
The gap between IDR 25,000 and IDR 210,000 is the honest state of the record. One named guesthouse guide gives the low figure. Independent visitor reports give the high one, and split it into a government fee near IDR 140,000 plus a further local charge of IDR 20,000. Both sit outside any published tariff. Budget for the top of the range and carry cash. 15
What does a day at Rangko Cave cost?
The one destination here with a clean read on its current status, and four named prices for the same half day.
Rangko Cave came back after the earthquake and was reported operating normally. The M7.7 Flores quake of 15 August 2026 shut a long list of sites across Nusa Tenggara Timur. By 31 August, reporting that quoted the province's travel agents' association and the regional tourism authority's data put Komodo National Park sailings and Rangko Cave both back in service. 8
The cave is a limestone chamber on the Flores mainland, an hour north of Labuan Bajo by road to Rangko village, then a 10 to 15 minute boat to the landing and a short walk. Inside sits a pool of clear, salty water. Around the middle of the day a shaft of sunlight comes through a gap in the roof and lands on it. The site sits outside Komodo National Park and charges its own local entry fee. 4, 5

| How you go | What the price covers | Price as quoted | Per person, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorbike drop-off, boat arranged for you | IDR 150,000 per person each way, plus IDR 300,000 for a boat carrying one to three people | IDR 450,000 each, two sharing | 25 |
| Independent | Motorbike USD 10, private boat USD 23, entrance USD 3 | USD 36 | 36 |
| Organized private tour | Private car, boat, entrance and guide | USD 45.93 | 46 |
| Sharing tour, about 4.5 hours | Air-conditioned transport, boat, all entrance fees, snorkel gear and water, plus Boleng Beach snorkeling and Amelia Hill | USD 48 | 48 |
Komodo Touristic's own estimates give the second and third lines. The first is Komodo One Click's published components, with the motorbike counted both ways and the boat split between two people: IDR 300,000 plus IDR 150,000 is IDR 450,000 each, about USD 25 at Rp 17,917. The fourth is an Alba Cruise sharing trip as listed by a review site, so confirm it with the operator. Both of those companies take bookings over WhatsApp instead of a published checkout.
The spread is USD 25 to USD 48, and it buys three different mornings. The cheapest version puts you on a motorbike for an hour each way and leaves the snorkeling out. Going independently costs about USD 36 and asks you to find a boat at Rangko yourself. The USD 48 sharing trip hands over the driving for about four and a half hours and adds two more stops. 5, 6, 7
Can you visit Wae Rebo in a day?
From Ruteng, a day works. From Labuan Bajo, the road decides it for you.
From Ruteng, yes. From Labuan Bajo, plan two days. The round-trip climb from Denge takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, which fits inside one day on its own. Add the drive from Labuan Bajo at 5 to 6 hours each way and the daylight runs out. Both guides consulted put the overnight first. 3, 2
The road splits into two legs. Labuan Bajo to Ruteng takes 3.5 to 4 hours. Ruteng to Denge, the trailhead village, takes another 1.5 to 2 hours on a narrower mountain road. The climb starts at Denge and gains height to about 1,200 metres. 2, 1
| Leg | Time | IDR | USD at Rp 17,917 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, by road | 3.5 to 4 hours | - | - |
| Ruteng to Denge, by road | 1.5 to 2 hours | - | - |
| Denge up to Wae Rebo, on foot | 2 to 3 hours up; 3.5 to 4.5 hours round trip | - | - |
| Private driver, Labuan Bajo to Wae Rebo, one way | - | 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 | 55.81 to 83.72 |
| Private car, Ruteng to Denge and back | - | 500,000 to 1,500,000 | 27.91 to 83.72 |
Transport figures are two independent 2026 travel accounts rather than one operator's rate card, and they agree on the order of magnitude. A round trip from Labuan Bajo therefore sits around IDR 2,000,000 to 3,000,000, about USD 112 to USD 167.
- 01Ruteng1 night
Breaks the mountain road in half and leaves the trailhead 1.5 to 2 hours away at breakfast, so the climb starts with the whole morning ahead of it.
→ 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Labuan Bajo. - 02Wae Rebo1 night
The village after the day visitors have gone back down, and the morning before the next ones arrive. The overnight contribution of IDR 325,000 includes meals.
→ 1.5 to 2 hours by road to Denge, then a 2 to 3 hour climb. - 03Labuan Bajo0 nights
Back down to the harbour town for the boats, the night market and the airport.
→ The descent, then 5 to 6 hours of road.
With less time: With one day to spare, base yourself in Ruteng, climb from Denge after breakfast and come down the same afternoon; the round trip on foot runs 3.5 to 4.5 hours. That leaves a couple of hours in the village and skips the evening entirely.
Staying the night changes what you see. One account calls the sunrise and the hours after dark an entirely different experience from a brief daytime stop. The other says a single day works and still leaves too little time up there. Meals come with the overnight contribution, so the extra cash mostly buys the evening. 3, 2
Getting to Labuan Bajo in the first place is its own budget. Bali to Labuan Bajo covers the flights, the bag limits and the ferry, which matters if the inland days are bolted onto a diving week.
What Wae Rebo charges, and what the village asks
Wae Rebo sets its own visitor contributions, and takes them in cash when you arrive. There is no online booking. Two independent 2026 accounts land on the same figures: IDR 50,000 for the welcome ceremony, IDR 200,000 for a day visit, IDR 325,000 to stay the night with meals, and IDR 200,000 to 250,000 for a trekking guide. 2
| Contribution | IDR | USD at Rp 17,917 |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome ceremony | 50,000 | 2.79 |
| Day visit, no overnight | 200,000 | 11.16 |
| Overnight stay with meals | 325,000 | 18.14 |
| Trekking guide, optional | 200,000 to 250,000 | 11.16 to 13.95 |
| A day visit with the welcome ceremony | 250,000 | 13.95 |
Two independent 2026 accounts converge on these amounts, and one narrows the guide fee to IDR 200,000 flat. The village and Manggarai Regency publish no fee schedule online, so read the figures as community-set and approximate, and carry more cash than the total.
A visit starts on the village's terms. A village elder introduces guests to the ancestors and asks their blessing. From that point guests belong to the village for the length of the stay, free to walk between the houses, watch the day's work and talk with the people who live there. The tua golo, the village elder, holds authority over adat, Manggarai customary law. 3
That authority is also why the calendar moves. When the community holds a ceremony, the village closes to visitors and says so. Seven Mbaru Niang houses stand in the clearing, each one home to several families, and the community rebuilt them itself. 1, 11

Wae Rebo holds a UNESCO award, and the name of it matters. In Bangkok on 27 August 2012 the Mbaru Niang took the Award of Excellence, the top tier of that year's UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards, for a community-led rebuilding project run with Indonesia's Rumah Asuh Foundation. World Heritage listing is a separate process with a separate list. Indonesia's own tourism-authority page uses the World Heritage wording; the 2012 citation names the houses and the work. 16, 1
Is Wae Rebo open right now?
Two named sources disagree, and one closure is already on the calendar.
Check on the day, because the record splits. The M7.7 quake of 15 August 2026 raised landslide risk on the trekking route, and the Wae Rebo Cultural Preservation Body closed the village to visitors that same week while its chair waited on a survey of the trail and the Mbaru Niang houses. 17
By 2 September 2026 a tourism worker in the village, speaking to detikBali, described Wae Rebo as open and was already arranging the next closure. A regional tourism report dated 31 August and updated 10 September still listed the village among sites shut for a post-earthquake safety check. No account closer to 26 September 2026 turned up in the research for this page. 11, 8
Then there is the village's own calendar. Wae Rebo closes to visitors on 2 and 3 October 2026 for a kenduri, the Manggarai ceremony for the dead, held in the main traditional house. Earlier in the year heavy rain and a landslide on the trekking route closed the village from 13 to 25 May 2026, twelve days, reopening once the debris was cleared. 11, 18
- Ask a Labuan Bajo operator, or the village, for today's status the day before you leave for Ruteng. The regency's tourism department names weather monitoring, with no fixed calendar, as the basis for reopening decisions. 18
- Keep a spare day in the week. A twelve-day closure in May 2026 and a same-week closure after the August quake are the pattern here. 18, 17
- Leave 2 and 3 October 2026 alone. The ceremony was scheduled well in advance and announced. 11
- Draw the cash in Labuan Bajo. The village takes payment on arrival, and there is no card machine at 1,200 metres. 2, 1
How much does a day trip from Labuan Bajo cost?
Rangko Cave is the cheapest full day you can buy here, and Wae Rebo's village fees are the smallest number on this page. What Wae Rebo costs is the road. At IDR 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 each way for a private driver, the road comes to four to six times the village's own contribution for a day visit with the ceremony, and eight to twelve times it for the round trip. 2
Table view: What one person pays for the day, in US dollars
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Wae Rebo, village fees only, car extra | $13.95 |
| Cunca Wulang, car split four ways, site closed | $23.75 |
| Rangko Cave, motorbike and shared boat, two people | $25.12 |
| Rangko Cave, independent | $36 |
| Rangko Cave, organized private tour | $45.93 |
| Rangko Cave, sharing tour with snorkeling | $48 |
Two bars cover only part of the day. Wae Rebo's bar is the village's contributions alone; the driver to the trailhead adds IDR 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 each way. The Cunca Wulang bar is a USD 95 full-day car divided by four passengers, with the trailhead entrance and guide still to pay in cash, at a site that is currently shut. The four Rangko Cave lines are all-in per person, and the USD 48 sharing trip is the only bar that covers transport, entrance, gear and two extra stops. Source: 2, 14, 6, 5, 7, 10
Read the chart as two separate questions. For Rangko Cave the question is what you want included, and about USD 23 separates the motorbike from the air-conditioned minibus. For Wae Rebo the question is the car, and the only real lever is how many people split it. 5, 6, 2
Get the current status in writing
Ask the operator, or the village in Wae Rebo's case, whether the site is open on your date. Cunca Wulang has been shut since 25 May 2026 and still appears in tour guides. 9
Price the car, then divide it
Land transport out of Labuan Bajo is quoted per car, so a full-day car at USD 95 works out at USD 23.75 a head with four aboard. Ask what the quote leaves out: entrance fees and the local guide are usually separate cash. 14
Do these trips need a Komodo National Park ticket?
All three sit outside the park boundary, so the park ticket buys nothing here. Komodo National Park's entrance ticket for foreign visitors runs IDR 200,000 to 250,000 per person per day, about USD 11 to USD 14, under government regulation 36 of 2024, and secondary reporting still disagrees on the exact figure inside that range. Cunca Wulang, Rangko Cave and Wae Rebo each collect their own local charge instead. 12, 13, 4, 10
That makes an inland day a useful counterweight to a week built on boats. If you are pricing the whole trip, what a Komodo trip costs breaks the park fees, boats and flights out line by line, and a liveaboard against day trips compares the two ways to see the water. For the islands either side of Flores, start at the Indonesia travel guide.
Divers weighing a boat against a base on land will want liveaboard against shore diving, which runs the same arithmetic over a week of dives. Book the inland day around the light and the weather, and confirm it the afternoon before you go.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cunca Wulang waterfall open in 2026?
No, and the reopening is the regency's call, not an operator's. The tourism department closed all visits from 25 May 2026 after a fatal suspension-bridge collapse the day before, pending a full evaluation of the site, and searches through 26 September 2026 found no reopening notice. West Manggarai's tourism office is the place to check, and any seller quoting the trip should give you the site's status in writing. 9
What time of day should I visit Rangko Cave?
Between 11am and 1pm, when a shaft of sunlight comes through the gap in the cave roof and lands on the pool. Earlier or later the chamber is dim. The way down uses a fixed ladder and a rope over wet limestone, so wear shoes with grip. 4
How much is a Rangko Cave trip per person?
About USD 36 going independently on Komodo Touristic's own estimate, made up of USD 10 for a motorbike, USD 23 for a private boat and USD 3 entrance. Its organized tour comes to USD 45.93. A 4.5-hour sharing trip that adds Boleng Beach snorkeling lists at USD 48. Two people using Komodo One Click's motorbike drop-off and shared boat pay about IDR 450,000 each, roughly USD 25. 5, 6, 7, 10
Can Wae Rebo be done as a day trip from Labuan Bajo?
The arithmetic says two days. Driving takes 5 to 6 hours each way, and the climb from Denge takes 2 to 3 hours up. From Ruteng, 1.5 to 2 hours from the trailhead, a day works: the round trip on foot runs 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Both guides consulted recommend the overnight, which includes meals for IDR 325,000. 2, 3
What does a Wae Rebo visit cost?
IDR 250,000, about USD 14, for a day visit with the welcome ceremony, or IDR 325,000, about USD 18, to stay the night with meals. The village takes it in cash on arrival and there is no card machine at 1,200 metres, so draw the money in Labuan Bajo. The car to the trailhead costs several times more than the village does. 2, 10
Is Wae Rebo a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
It holds the Award of Excellence from the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards, given in Bangkok on 27 August 2012 for the community-led rebuilding of its Mbaru Niang houses with Indonesia's Rumah Asuh Foundation. That is a conservation prize, and a different thing from a World Heritage listing. Indonesia's own tourism-authority page uses the World Heritage wording; the 2012 citation names the houses and the rebuilding. 16, 1
Do I pay the Komodo National Park fee on an inland day trip?
No. Cunca Wulang, Rangko Cave and Wae Rebo all sit outside the park boundary, and each collects its own local charge. The park's own ticket for foreign visitors runs IDR 200,000 to 250,000 per person per day under government regulation 36 of 2024, about USD 11 to USD 14, and covers the islands and the water inside the boundary. 12, 13, 4, 10
When is the best season for these inland trips?
April to November, the dry months, give clearer pools at Cunca Wulang and a gentler current on the walk in. The same rain that clouds a gorge sets off landslides on the Wae Rebo trekking route, which closed that village for twelve days in May 2026. Keep a spare day in the week either way. 14, 18
