Labuan Bajo travel guide: the harbor town, the hill and inland Flores

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Three nights in the harbor town priced and planned: the free hill above the bay, the coupon fish market, the four peoples who live here, and the road inland in rupiah.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Two nights covers the town, three covers the town and the hill. Labuan Bajo crosses on foot in about 15 minutes, and Komodo Airport sits about 3 km from the center. 1, 2
  • Bukit Sylvia charges nothing. The hill sits 3.5 to 4 km from the center, 10 to 15 minutes by car, and the light lands about 5:30pm to 6:30pm in the April to November dry season. 3
  • Kampung Ujung runs on paper coupons, IDR 20,000 to IDR 100,000, about USD 1.12 to USD 5.58. Buy them first, then pick your fish, any time from about 5pm to midnight. 4, 5
  • Book the national park before you fly. Since April 2026 every visitor reserves through the park's own SiOra system, and there is no walk-in ticket window at the harbor. 6, 7
  • Inland Flores is a week, not an afternoon. Ruteng is about 3 hours by road and Kelimutu 10 to 12 hours each way; seven days with a private driver and six beds runs about IDR 4,400,000 to IDR 10,000,000, or USD 246 to USD 558. 8, 9, 5

The harbor town at five in the afternoon

What Labuan Bajo is when you stop treating it as a departure lounge.

At five the boats start coming back. Day-trip decks empty onto the concrete, engines idle in the bay, and the waterfront fills with people buying fish for dinner. Labuan Bajo is a working harbor first and a resort second. Most visitors give it one night on the way to the dragons. The town holds a free hill, a seafood market that runs on coupons, and a road inland that repays a longer stay.

The place is small. Labuan Bajo counts 7,226 people across 11.65 square kilometers, roughly 620 people per square kilometer, and crosses on foot in about 15 minutes. It is the capital of West Manggarai Regency, at the western tip of Flores. The name joins labuan, harbor, with the Bajo people who settled this coast. 1

Arrival paperwork and the wider shape of the country sit in MMT's Indonesia travel guide. What follows is the town: how long to stay, what to walk to, how the fish market charges, who lives here, and what the road inland costs.

How many days in Labuan Bajo?

Two nights covers the town. Three covers the town and the hill. One night is enough to land, eat on the waterfront and board a boat in the morning. A second night buys sunset from Bukit Sylvia and a full evening at the fish market. A third leaves room for Batu Cermin cave, 5 km northeast of the marina, or a slow morning before a park day. 1, 3

Komodo Airport is about 3 km out, with the harbor roughly 10 minutes further on. Drop the bag, walk the harbor front, and watch the day boats unload. 2, 13

→ Taxi or hotel car from the terminal, about 10 minutes
  2. 02
The hill and the fish market1 night

Bukit Sylvia for golden hour, about 5:30pm to 6:30pm, then Kampung Ujung for grilled fish once the stalls open at about 5pm. 3, 4

→ Car or scooter, 10 to 15 minutes each way to the hill
  3. 03
The park day, reserved in advance1 night

Boats leave early from the harbor. The reservation has to exist in SiOra before you sail, so book it on arrival at the latest. 6

→ Day boat from Labuan Bajo harbor

With less time: With one night: land, eat at the waterfront stalls, sail at dawn.

The park day decides the shape of the week. A day boat returns you to the same bed. A liveaboard takes the bed with it and gives the town back only at the end. MMT prices that fork in Komodo liveaboard vs day trips and totals a whole trip in Komodo trip cost.

What is there to do in Labuan Bajo itself?

A hill, a harbor and a cave, all inside 5 km of the marina.

On land the list is short, and most of it is free. Nineteen named islands, beaches and dive sites sit offshore, and they pull almost everyone onto a boat. The town's own attractions are a sunset hill, a working waterfront and a cave 5 km out. 1

Bukit Sylvia is the town's sunset spot. A Labuan Bajo boat operator working here since 2015 puts the hill 3.5 to 4 km from the center, 10 to 15 minutes by car, then a few minutes on foot from a small parking area. Golden hour falls about 5:30pm to 6:30pm, clearest in the April to November dry season. 3

Kampung Ujung: how the coupon system works

Buy paper coupons first, then choose your fish. Kampung Ujung runs about 250 meters along the waterfront, from roughly 5pm to midnight, with some stalls later. Coupons come in denominations from IDR 20,000 to IDR 100,000, about USD 1.12 to USD 5.58 at Bank Indonesia's 25 September 2026 rate. You trade them for grilled fish, shrimp, squid, crab or lobster, cooked to order. 4, 5

  1. Walk down at dusk

The strip wakes up around 5pm, as the day boats finish unloading. Earlier than that and the grills are still cold. 4

  2. Buy the coupons before you shop

Denominations run from IDR 20,000 to IDR 100,000, about USD 1.12 to USD 5.58. Start small; a second round of coupons takes a minute. 4, 5

  3. Pick the fish, watch it cooked

Grilled fish, shrimp, squid, crab and lobster sit out along the stalls and go on the grill once you choose. 4

  4. Keep an eye on the clock

Most of the strip trades until about midnight, and some stalls stay open later. A late boat arrival still gets dinner. 4

Who lives in Labuan Bajo?

Four peoples share this harbor, and they name themselves.

Four communities live side by side here, each with its own name, history and ceremonies. A regional news outlet set them out in January 2026: the Bajo, the Manggarai, the Bima or Mbojo, and the Bugis. Naming them beats calling everyone local. 14

  • The Bajo are a seafaring people whose Mappaleppe ceremony asks the ancestors for safe voyages. The town's name carries theirs. 14, 1
  • The Manggarai farm the highlands, divide land under the Lodok system and perform the caci whip-fighting dance at weddings. 14, 15
  • The Bima, or Mbojo, came across from eastern Sumbawa and are one of the harbor's four communities. 14
  • The Bugis arrived from South Sulawesi from the middle of the twentieth century, keeping the Mappalette Bola house-moving ceremony and the Siri na Pacce code of honor. 14

Flores around Labuan Bajo is Manggarai country. The Manggarai number about 725,000 across West Manggarai, Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies, more than 90 percent Roman Catholic, with a Sunni Muslim minority on the coast. Further inland, the Ngada around Bajawa and the Lio around Kelimutu are separate peoples with their own villages, ceremonies and visitor rules. 16, 8, 9

Is inland Flores worth the detour?

Ruteng is an afternoon away. Kelimutu is a week.

Yes, on its own week. Ruteng sits about 3 hours east by road. Kelimutu, the volcano with three colored crater lakes, sits 10 to 12 hours away each way, which is 20 to 24 hours of driving for one morning at the rim. A traveler who drove the route calls five days a tight minimum and seven to ten days the comfortable version. 8, 9

The named stops are the reason to go. Around Ruteng the Manggarai Lingko system lays out rice fields in circles that fan from a center point, best seen from the hillsides above. Near Bajawa stand Bena and Tololela, Ngada villages on the UNESCO list. At Kelimutu the three lakes change color, and the Lio people's own account gives each lake its meaning. 8, 9

What does a week inland cost?

A private driver and six beds run about IDR 4,400,000 to IDR 10,000,000, or USD 246 to USD 558. That is the spine of the bill: IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,000,000 a day for car and driver, IDR 150,000 to IDR 500,000 a night for a room, on one traveler's 2026 account of the route. Fuel, food, tickets and the flight out of Ende sit on top. 8, 5

Split between two people, the low end is about USD 123 each for driver and beds. Half of IDR 4,400,000 is IDR 2,200,000, which converts to USD 122.79 at the same rate. Divers weighing road time against water time will find that trade in liveaboard vs shore diving. 8, 5

The building boom, and what it leaves behind

Indonesia's government named Labuan Bajo one of five super-priority tourism destinations in 2018, and the town has been building ever since. Tourism land grew by 161 hectares between 2011 and 2017, and another 246 hectares between 2017 and 2023, with 267 more projected by 2029. A 2019 count listed 13 five-star hotels, 68 non-star hotels, 4 villas and 26 dormitories. 1

161 plus 246 is 407 hectares already built since 2011; adding the 267 projected gives 674. Figures from an encyclopedia entry citing sourced studies of Labuan Bajo's tourism development, read 26 September 2026.

The strain shows in the waste and the wages. Komodo National Park and the Labuan Bajo coast together produce an average of 13 tons of waste a day, 35 to 40 percent of it inorganic, which is 4.55 to 5.2 tons. About one third of local tourism businesses have Flores owners, and a 2017 assessment flagged low wages and weak labor-law compliance across the sector. Where you eat and sleep moves that third. 1

What should you check before you book?

Four things move between today and your flight: the park reservation, the fees, the rupiah rate and the road. Ten minutes of checking settles most of them, and the park reservation settles the trip.

  • Your park reservation sits in SiOra, for your date and your boat. 6
  • Today's rupiah rate, if you are converting. Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference was IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. 5
  • Your e-VOA, if you would rather settle entry before landing: IDR 500,000, about USD 27.91, valid 30 days, extendable once. 10, 5
  • The flight, since two airlines carry the Bali route: Batik Air and Indonesia AirAsia, seven departures a day, 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. MMT breaks the baggage rules down in Bali to Labuan Bajo. 19
  • Kelimutu's entrance fee, which no source here could confirm; the park's own site returned nothing on 26 September 2026. 9
  • Whether Bukit Sylvia is still open to walk up, and what a driver charges to wait. 3
  • Your hotel's distance from the harbor and the airport. Downtown hotels in the Plaza Marina complex put themselves about 10 minutes from the terminal. 13
  • 115 saved in your phone: Basarnas, Indonesia's search and rescue line, for anything at sea. 11

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a car in Labuan Bajo?

For the town, no. It crosses on foot in about 15 minutes, and the harbor, the stalls and most hotels sit along that walk. For Bukit Sylvia you want a ride: 3.5 to 4 km from the center, 10 to 15 minutes by car, then a few minutes uphill on foot. Batu Cermin cave is 5 km northeast of the marina. 1, 3

Is Bukit Sylvia free?

No fee and no ticket booth, just a small parking area and a short walk up. Ask at your hotel before you build an evening around it. 3

What is the currency, and what is a dollar worth?

The Indonesian rupiah. Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate, the central bank's own daily figure, was IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. It moves daily, so check it the week you travel. 5

Do I need a visa to visit Labuan Bajo?

Most visitors use Indonesia's visa on arrival. The e-VOA option, applied for online before you fly, has been available since 9 November 2022, so there is no need to wait until landing to settle it. The fee is IDR 500,000, about USD 27.91, valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30. That single visa covers Flores and the rest of the country. 10, 5

How do you get to Labuan Bajo?

By air, to Komodo Airport (LBJ), about 3 km from the center with the harbor roughly 10 minutes further. Batik Air and Indonesia AirAsia fly from Bali, seven departures a day between them, 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes in the air. The airport gained international status on 2 April 2024 and added a Kuala Lumpur route in September 2024. 19, 2

Can I still buy a Komodo park ticket at the gate?

No. Since April 2026 every visitor, Indonesian or foreign, reserves through the park's SiOra platform in advance, and only licensed boat operators can create that booking; there is no walk-in ticket window at the harbor. Book 3 to 4 days ahead in quiet months and 2 to 3 weeks ahead in June, July and August, when the daily cap is more likely to sell out. MMT breaks the rest of the boat and fee arithmetic down in Komodo trip cost. 6, 7

Who do you call in an emergency at sea here?

115, the 24-hour line at Basarnas, Indonesia's national search and rescue agency. The agency states the number covers accidents, disasters and life-threatening conditions anywhere in the country, at sea included. Save it before you board a boat. 11
