Where to eat in Labuan Bajo: start at Kampung Ujung
At six in the evening the harbor road starts smoking. Kampung Ujung runs from the fish market to the tourism dock, and dozens of family-run stalls set their tables along it. You choose a fish off the ice, watch it weighed, and eat it grilled with pinisi schooners moored in front of you and the sun dropping behind them. 7, 1
Every stall in the zone is a micro, small or medium business, each cooking its own short menu. 7 At Kuliner 22 the signature plate is grilled fish in yellow spice paste with a Manggarai brown-sugar sambal. 7
This page prices that evening from figures vendors and officials have put on the record, read on 26 September 2026. It also carries the part the roundups leave out. Kampung Ujung has been through two public rounds of price complaints, in June 2024 and January 2026, and the repair is still under way. 3, 1
Labuan Bajo sits in West Manggarai Regency, on Manggarai land. The wider park area is home to Komodo (Ata Modo), Bima and Manggarai communities, alongside Bajo and Bugis families. 8 If the trip around the meal is still open, the Komodo trip cost breakdown sets food beside boats and park fees.

What is the Labuan Bajo night market, and when does it open?
The stalls' own posted schedule, the certification the zone carries, and the 27 vendors who keep it running.
Posted opening is 18:00, and vendors arrive well before it. On a January 2026 morning one vendor came early from her home in Kelurahan Labuan Bajo, hours ahead of a 6 p.m. opening. 1 No official closing time is posted, though a guesthouse blog estimates the market winds down around 21:00 to 22:00; treat that as a loose estimate rather than a posted schedule, and ask a stall the hour when you pass in daylight. 4
The zone carries a formal certification. On 8 May 2024 Indonesia's National Committee for Islamic Economics and Finance and LPPOM MUI, the halal inspection body of the Indonesian Council of Ulama, named Kampung Ujung the first certified Zona KHAS in Nusa Tenggara: kuliner, halal, aman, sehat. 5
The standard behind that label asks for at least 10 businesses sharing one site, 75 percent of them halal-certified, and 90 percent stickered safe and healthy by the local health office. At Kampung Ujung, 30 of 40 small businesses held halal certificates, exactly the 75 percent bar. 6
Behind the tables, the vendors run the place themselves. Margareta Renda, 51, who works the stall Grace with three employees, said the 27 vendors trading in January 2026 each put in IDR 100,000 a month to pay a cleaner and toilet attendant, IDR 2,100,000 in total. In January 2026 only the women's public toilet worked, and vendors were buying tanker water to wash down flooding from blocked drains. 1
- Kuliner 22 sells fish by weight at IDR 25,000 per 100 grams, with shellfish, crab, mantis shrimp and lobster beside it. 7
- Grace is Margareta Renda's stall, three employees, one of the 27 trading through January 2026. 1
- Seafood Kampung Ujung, Restoran Artomoro, Tree Top and Arema Sari Laut are other named addresses in and around the zone. Tree Top is a two-level room with a harbor view, known for spicy fish. 9
What does fish cost at Kampung Ujung?
Local fish has a standard price of IDR 170,000 a kilogram, about $9.49. Export-grade fish, kerapu and its neighbors on the ice, runs IDR 200,000 or more. Margareta Renda's stall buys from collectors at around IDR 200,000 a kilogram and sells at IDR 250,000, a margin of IDR 50,000 that pays for charcoal, spices, garnish and staff. 1, 2
That counter price matches a figure from a different stall 17 months earlier. Kuliner 22, open about a year in August 2024, sold fish at IDR 25,000 per ons, the Indonesian 100-gram unit, which works out at IDR 250,000 a kilogram. Two vendors, two years apart, the same number. 7, 1

Dollar figures convert at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate, IDR 17,917 per US dollar on 25 September 2026, the last business day before this research. 2 A whole fish is sold by weight, so the scale writes the main course on your bill.
Why do bills at Kampung Ujung go wrong?
The complaints are about arithmetic nobody showed the customer. A traveler's Instagram post on 30 May 2024 itemized a Kampung Ujung dinner for four and said the menu carried no prices: grilled fish IDR 150,000, rice and side dishes for four IDR 160,000, three fresh orange juices IDR 150,000, one regular orange juice IDR 25,000. With 10 percent tax the reported total was IDR 530,000, about $29.58. 10, 2
| Line | IDR | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Grilled fish | 150,000 | 8.37 |
| Rice and side dishes, four people | 160,000 | 8.93 |
| Three fresh orange juices | 150,000 | 8.37 |
| One regular orange juice | 25,000 | 1.40 |
| Reported total after 10 percent tax | 530,000 | 29.58 |
The four lines add to IDR 485,000, and 10 percent on that is IDR 533,500, so the IDR 530,000 in the report sits IDR 3,500 under the arithmetic. Kompas covered the same week with a receipt photo showing two portions of tofu and tempeh at IDR 40,000, fish at IDR 150,000 and three fresh orange juices at IDR 150,000, overlapping this list without matching it. 11 Read both as accounts of one news cycle, and neither as the single receipt. Dollars at the 25 September 2026 JISDOR rate. 2
A vendor gave Liputan6 the supply side of the juice line. Honey oranges cost IDR 25,000 a kilogram at the market and IDR 30,000 bought near a kiosk, and about 90 percent of the fruit and vegetables sold in Labuan Bajo arrive by truck and boat from Bajawa, Ende, Maumere, Bima, Lombok, Bali and East Java. 10 Freight explains part of a price. It does not explain a blank menu.
Then the bills got bigger. More than 20 members of an Astindo delegation, the Indonesian tours and travel agencies association, were in town for their national congress and were billed IDR 16 million including 10 percent VAT for one dinner at Kampung Ujung on 27 October. They paid IDR 11 million after protesting. Across 20 people that is at most IDR 800,000 each as billed, about $44.65, and at most IDR 550,000 as paid, about $30.70. 1, 2
Government has stepped in twice in public. On 3 June 2024 West Manggarai's FORKOMPIMDA, the district forum of civil, police, military and judicial leaders, met and agreed to form a task force to be legitimized by a regent's decree; Deputy Regent Yulianus Weng said the price story had been viral for days. 3
On 5 January 2026 Regent Edistasius Endi ordered his department heads to evaluate every small business in the zone, and the culinary area closed for a cleanup on 12 and 13 January 2026. 1 Vendors then signed statements committing to transparent pricing, fresh seafood, dishes cooked as ordered, presentable tables and staff trained to serve. 1
How do you order so the bill holds no surprises?
Five moves, in order, and the fish arrives at a price you already know. Every one of them comes from a rule the district or the tourism authority has already published. 3, 10
Ask the rate per kilogram, then choose the fish
Local fish at the standard price is IDR 170,000 a kilogram and export-grade fish is IDR 200,000 or more, so the species you point at moves the bill before the weight does. 1
Watch it weighed on the digital scale
The scale comes from the same 2024 instruction. A fish weighed in front of you at a stated rate per kilogram turns the main course into arithmetic you can check on your phone. 3
Settle the extras and the tax before the charcoal
Rice, side dishes, sambal and fresh juice each land as their own line, and 10 percent tax sat on top of the 2024 bill that went viral. Agree one total, extras included. 10
Take an itemized bill, and scan the barcode if it looks wrong
The district office runs a barcode complaint channel inside the zone. Photograph the bill first, then use it. 1
Where to eat beyond the market: warungs, bakeries and cafes
Jalan Soekarno Hatta is the other half of eating here. The street carries warungs, a bakery and coffee shops inside a few hundred meters, and it is where the printed prices live.

La Cucina, an Italian kitchen on the street, publishes a full menu with figures and states its charges. A plain omelette at breakfast is IDR 38,000, a Margherita is IDR 58,000 small and IDR 90,000 regular, and Rigatoni al Ragu di Maiale is IDR 146,000. The menu says prices exclude 10 percent tax and a 3 percent service charge, so the rigatoni bills at IDR 164,980, about $9.21. Breakfast runs daily 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. 12, 2
| Level | What it buys | IDR per person | USD per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warung | A full local meal | 15,000 - 50,000 | 0.84 - 2.79 |
| Night market stall | One plate of grilled seafood or satay with rice | 20,000 - 60,000 | 1.12 - 3.35 |
| Bakery | Pastries, bread, sandwiches, coffee or a cooked breakfast at Bajo Bakery | 20,000 - 40,000 | 1.12 - 2.23 |
| Cafe | Coffee and meals with vegan options at Cafe.In.Hit Coffee Shop | 40,000 and up | 2.23 and up |
| Mid-range restaurant | A full meal with drinks on the main strip | 100,000 - 200,000 | 5.58 - 11.16 |
| Named dish | Rigatoni al Ragu di Maiale at La Cucina, before tax and service | 146,000 | 8.15 |
The warung, night-market and mid-range ranges come from a Labuan Bajo guesthouse's own blog, which carries no publish date. The Bajo Bakery and Cafe.In.Hit figures and hours come from an independent travel blog last updated 7 August 2026: Bajo Bakery Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Cafe.In.Hit daily 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. La Cucina's figures come from its own menu page. Blog ranges are a planning benchmark; the figure at the counter governs. Dollars at the 25 September 2026 JISDOR rate. 2

| Astindo group dinner, as paid, per head at most | $30.70 |

Every bar comes from the same few hundred meters of harbor road and main street. A group of travel professionals ended up paying 11 times the top of a warung meal per head, and the bill they first got was 16 times it, for a meal priced after the eating. Agreeing the total in advance closes that gap. Source: 1, 4, 2
Two names the roundups still recommend may be gone. A travel blog last updated 7 August 2026 tags Warung Mama as closed since June 2025 and Mediterraneo as closed since April 2025. Other listings, none of them more recently dated, still carry both as open. Nothing published by either business settles it, so confirm before you plan an evening around one. 13 Planning the daylight hours too? Day trips from Labuan Bajo sets out what is open this year.
Manggarai coffee, and what to order at breakfast
The coffee on Labuan Bajo menus has a protected name and a farmers' body behind it. Arabica Flores Manggarai coffee is represented by its own geographical-indication society, formed in 2015, covering more than 1,000 farmers in 30 farmer groups across Manggarai, West Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies, on more than 71,000 hectares, with average production above 3,000 tons a year. 14
The society also sets how the cherries are handled: at least 95 percent red-cherry picking, hand sorting, floating in water, pulping, 12 to 36 hours of fermentation, then drying to 11 or 12 percent moisture. It describes the cup as herbal, floral and spicy in the nose, medium to high in body, with acidity from moderately high to high. Order it black the first time. 14
- Nasi campur, rice with a selection of dishes, and ikan bakar, grilled fish, are the two plates you will meet most often. 4
- Jagung Bose is a Flores dish of corn slow-cooked in coconut milk, and turns up in the more local places. 4
- Roti Kompiang is a Manggarai flatbread with sesame seeds, good with the coffee above. 4
- Es jeruk, fresh orange juice over ice, is the drink at the center of the 2024 bill, so ask its price like any other line. 4, 10

Build it from plates you can see priced. A warung meal runs IDR 15,000 to IDR 50,000 and a night market plate with rice IDR 20,000 to IDR 60,000, about $0.84 to $3.35. A full mid-range meal with drinks is IDR 100,000 to IDR 200,000, about $5.58 to $11.16. A whole fish at the stalls is charged by weight on top of that. 4, 1, 2
What time does the Labuan Bajo night market open?
The stalls open at 18:00. No official closing time is posted, though a guesthouse blog estimates they wind down around 21:00 to 22:00, well short of the '4am' figure sometimes repeated online. Ask a stall in daylight if you want the last order. 1, 4
Is Kampung Ujung expensive?
By the kilogram it is ordinary: IDR 170,000 for local fish, IDR 250,000 at one stall's counter, about $9.49 and $13.95. Bills go wrong when the rate and the weight stay unspoken. One group of more than 20 travel professionals was billed IDR 16 million for a single dinner and paid IDR 11 million after protesting. 1, 7, 2
How do I avoid being overcharged at Kampung Ujung?
Read the price list, ask the rate per kilogram, watch the fish weighed on the digital scale, agree the extras and the 10 percent tax before cooking starts, and take an itemized bill. The price list and the scale are both instructions West Manggarai's task force gave vendors in June 2024, and the district runs a barcode complaint channel inside the zone. 3, 10, 1
Is the food at Kampung Ujung halal?
The zone was certified as a Zona KHAS, a halal, safe and healthy culinary area, on 8 May 2024, the first in Nusa Tenggara. The standard asks for 75 percent of businesses on the site to hold halal certificates, and 30 of Kampung Ujung's 40 small businesses did. Individual stalls hold individual certificates, so look for the sticker at the stall you pick. 5, 6
What should I order in Labuan Bajo?
Ikan bakar, grilled fish, at the harbor stalls, and nasi campur, rice with a selection of dishes, anywhere in town. Jagung Bose is a Flores plate of corn slow-cooked in coconut milk.
