The way in is a cave
Three staircases drop off the cliff at Uluwatu to a gap in the rock, and the third one holds up year round. You walk through the cave and paddle out onto an exposed reef and left hand point that runs for most of a kilometre. The season is May to October. The swell that lights it up comes from the southwest, and the wind that grooms it blows offshore from the southeast. 1, 14
First timers look at the Peak, see the crowd and decide Uluwatu is above their pay grade. The Peak is the most consistent part of the reef and the busiest. It is also one of six named sections. A surf camp that has worked this break since 2005 lists them from the cave outward: the Racetrack, the Peak, Temples, Outside Corner, the Bombie and Secrets. 1
The Racetrack starts at the cave mouth. It is the entry level section, best from low to mid tide, and it gives rides of 300 to 400 metres if you can hold the fast parts. Surf-Forecast rates it 4 out of 10 with very consistent surf and puts its best tide at mid. Learn the reef there. 1, 2
Then there are the neighbours. Five more reef breaks sit within about one to three kilometres along the Bukit: Impossibles, Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan and Dreamland. A scooter from IDR 65,000 a day reaches all of them before lunch, so the tide and your level pick the wave, and the drive stops mattering. 7, 10
Which Uluwatu break matches your level?
Seven waves on one stretch of reef, with the forecasters' own quality ratings and the tide each one wants.
Quality ratings out of 10 are the fastest way to sort the Bukit. Surf-Forecast publishes one for each break along with a reliability word and, for most of them, a best tide. Read the ratings as power and shape, not as difficulty. A 5 out of 10 reef with rocks in the line up asks more of you than a 2 out of 10 beach break. 10, 11
| Break | Type | Quality, of 10 | Reliability | Best tide | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Impossibles | Reef, breaks left | 5 | Very consistent | Low | Strong surfers; rocks in the line up |
| Racetrack, at Uluwatu | Reef and point, left | 4 | Very consistent | Low to mid; mid per Surf-Forecast | The entry section, 300 to 400 m rides |
| Padang Padang | Reef | 4 | Inconsistent | Mid, or high per a second source | Experienced surfers over shallow reef |
| Balangan | Reef | 3 | Consistent | Works at low and high | Intermediates; July the best month |
| Bingin | Reef, breaks left | 3 | Consistent | None stated; all tides in the dry season | Intermediates; calm swimming inshore |
| Dreamland | Beach and reef, left and right | 2 | Fairly consistent | Low | Beginners and first lessons |
| Uluwatu: Peak, Temples, Outside Corner, Bombie, Secrets | Exposed reef and left point | Not rated by section | Often working | Quality holds across the tide | Advanced; sharp reef at dead low |
Ratings, reliability wording and best tides are Surf-Forecast.com's own for each break, read on 25 September 2026. The section breakdown at Uluwatu comes from a surf camp's own guide to its home break. Padang Padang carries an unresolved conflict between two sources on its best tide; see Before you book.
The pattern in that table is worth carrying around. Low tide lights up Impossibles and Dreamland, the strongest and the softest wave on the reef. Mid tide belongs to the Racetrack and, on one reading, to Padang Padang. High tide fills in the Peak and hides the coral. Bingin sits outside the pattern: its own guide text names no single best tide, and a second source has it working on all tides through the dry season. 10, 11, 2, 15, 9, 1
How much does a surf lesson in Uluwatu cost?
Three named schools publish their own prices. All three land in the same band.
Three schools around Uluwatu print their prices. Two quote in rupiah: IDR 400,000 to IDR 650,000 for a two hour session. The third quotes in pounds: GBP 20 to GBP 29 for one session, GBP 35 to GBP 47 for two in a day, by whether you sleep at the camp. Every one of them puts the board and the rash guard in the price. 3, 4, 17
| School and base | Group of 3 or more, IDR | Semi-private, IDR | Private 1 to 1, IDR | Multi-session price, IDR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bali Bisa Surf School, Uluwatu and Dreamland Beach | 400,000 each | 500,000 each, for 2 to 3 people | 650,000 | Not published |
| Hawaii Surf Bali, Jalan Pantai Bingin | 400,000 each | 1,000,000 for the session | 650,000 | Private: 3 sessions 1,950,000; 5 sessions 3,100,000 |
At Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of Rp17,917 per US dollar on 25 September 2026, IDR 400,000 is about $22.33 and IDR 650,000 about $36.28. Read the semi-private column carefully: Bali Bisa quotes per person, Hawaii Surf Bali quotes a session total. Hawaii Surf Bali's five session private pack works out at IDR 620,000 a session, a saving of IDR 30,000 each. Its Nusa Dua lessons are priced higher and sit outside this table.
Padang Padang Surf Camp in Pecatu prices in pounds and splits the rate by where you sleep. A beginner or intermediate group lesson costs a camp guest GBP 20 for one session or GBP 35 for two in a day. Walk in from elsewhere and the same sessions cost GBP 29 and GBP 47. 17
Doubling up pays either way. Two sessions in a day work out at GBP 17.50 each for guests and GBP 23.50 for everyone else. Surf guiding, for surfers who want a local eye instead of a coach, is GBP 12 a day with your own board, GBP 20 with the camp's. 17
Padang Padang: cheap to walk into, argued over at the tide
Entry to Padang Padang Beach is IDR 15,000 for an international adult and IDR 10,000 for a child aged 3 to 10, cash only, collected at the steps. Parking is IDR 2,000 a vehicle for the day. Then the prices turn: a board on the sand is IDR 100,000 an hour and a one hour lesson booked at the beach is IDR 400,000. The fee page carries a stated update date of 27 December 2025. 18

That disagreement is real, and the beach settles it on the day. A Bali tour operator's water safety guide calls Padang Padang a shallow reef break whose best time is high tide, and reserves it for more experienced surfers. Surf-Forecast has it as a fairly exposed reef break, inconsistent, 4 out of 10, best around mid tide. Neither source is a lifeguard service or a government agency. Ask at the beach on the day you surf. 12, 13
What both sources agree on is the floor. Sharp coral lies close under the surface here, exposed at low water and hidden at high. Padang Padang sits on the same water safety list as Uluwatu and Bingin for reef and rock hazard. Wear booties and look at the reef from the steps before you commit to a session. 12
What does a day on the Bukit cost?
Five ways to spend a surfing day, priced from the operators' own pages on 25 September 2026.
A surfing day on the Bukit runs from about IDR 120,000 to about IDR 720,000, and the whole spread is the coach. Strip the lesson out and you are paying for a board, a scooter and a parking fee. Add a private session and the day is just over four times the delivered-board day at IDR 175,000. The step from that day to a group lesson is IDR 295,000. 6, 7, 8, 3, 4
Table view: A surfing day on the Bukit, five ways
| Item | Value (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Two hours at Balangan, own session | 120,000 IDR |
| Board delivered for the day, two breaks | 175,000 IDR |
| Two hours at Padang Padang, walk up | 215,000 IDR |
| Group lesson of three, plus scooter | 470,000 IDR |
| Private lesson, plus scooter | 720,000 IDR |
The emphasised bar is the value pick for a surfer who already stands up: one delivered board for the day, one scooter, two parking fees, and every break on the reef in reach. The two lesson bars include the same scooter and one parking fee. Source: 6, 7, 8, 9, 18, 3, 4
| The day | Board or lesson, IDR | Scooter, IDR | Entry and parking, IDR | Day total, IDR | About, USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two hours at Balangan on a shack board | 50,000 | 65,000 | 5,000 | 120,000 | 6.70 |
| Board delivered for the day, two breaks | 100,000 | 65,000 | 10,000 | 175,000 | 9.77 |

| Private lesson, one to one, board included | 650,000 | 65,000 | 5,000 | 720,000 | 40.19 |
| Spread, cheapest to dearest | 600,000 | 33.49 |
Scooter at the Honda Beat daily rate of IDR 65,000. Parking at IDR 5,000 a scooter at Balangan and Bingin; the Padang Padang row assumes you walk in from lodging nearby and pay the IDR 15,000 entry. Board rates: IDR 50,000 for two hours at Balangan's shacks, IDR 100,000 a day delivered to Bingin, Padang Padang or Suluban, IDR 100,000 an hour on the sand at Padang Padang. Dollar column at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate of Rp17,917 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. Food, lodging, the Love Bali levy and airport transfers sit outside these totals.
One number does the most work here. A board delivered to the beach is IDR 100,000 for the whole day. A board handed to you on the sand at Padang Padang is IDR 100,000 for one hour. Book the day rate the night before and the hourly rate stops applying to you. 6, 18
The sand rates vary by beach. Balangan's shacks are the gentlest at about IDR 50,000 for two hours, which works out at IDR 25,000 an hour. Bingin runs about IDR 150,000 for two hours, so IDR 75,000 an hour. Padang Padang is the steepest of the three. 8, 9, 18
If you are pricing a longer stay around these numbers, the one month in Bali itinerary puts the surf days inside a full month of nights and transfers, and how much a month in Bali costs carries the food and rent lines this page leaves out.
Balangan, Bingin, Impossibles and Dreamland

Four waves, four reasons to ride over. The Bukit rewards a surfer who moves with the tide instead of sitting in one line up all morning. Here is what the forecasters and the beach reports say about each. 10, 15, 16, 11
- Impossibles is the pick when Uluwatu is too big or too crowded. Surf-Forecast rates it 5 out of 10 and very consistent, the highest of the Bukit breaks checked, a left over reef that wants low tide and a southwest swell. Watch for rocks in the line up. 10
- Bingin gives you a left outside and quiet water inshore. The fringing reef keeps the swimming calm near the sand, with waves that barely reach the shoreline. Surf-Forecast has it at 3 out of 10, consistent, offshore on an east wind, August its strongest month, and its guide text names no single best tide. A second source has the break working on all tides through the May to October season. 15, 9
- Balangan is a long left off the point. 3 out of 10, consistent, offshore on an east-southeast wind, and July is its best month on the historical model, with 99 per cent of days surfable. Parking is IDR 5,000 for a scooter and IDR 10,000 for a car, with no entrance fee, and a beach umbrella is about IDR 50,000. 16, 8
- Dreamland is the beginner room. A beach and reef break that goes left and right, 2 out of 10 for power, fairly consistent, best around low tide, August its strongest month. Bali Bisa Surf School runs its beginner lessons here, on the softest wave of the set. 11, 3
- Bingin's clifftop lot is IDR 10,000 for a car and IDR 5,000 for a motorbike, with no entrance fee. Board rental at Bingin is about IDR 150,000 for two hours, the steepest hourly rate on the reef after Padang Padang. 9
Getting here is short and cheap. Ngurah Rai airport to Uluwatu is about 18 kilometres, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and a named transfer operator prices a private minivan for one to five people at IDR 250,000, around $13.95, with tax and fuel in the figure. Once you are on the Bukit, where to stay in Uluwatu sorts the cliff villas from the surf camps, and the wider Indonesia travel guide handles the island hopping either side of this week. 19, 5
Read the reef before you paddle out
A rip runs outward along the surface, and the way out of one is sideways. A Bali tour operator's water safety guide gives the sequence: stop swimming for the beach, move along the shoreline until the pull weakens, then come in at an angle. Reef, coral and rock at Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang sit hidden under water at high tide, which is when the surface looks friendliest. 12
Booties are the cheap insurance on a reef this sharp. Hawaii Surf Bali hands out reef booties and zinc with the board and the rash guard; Surf Lesson Bali puts booties in its day rental too. Uluwatu's own reef turns shallow and sharp at dead low, even though the wave quality there holds across the tide. 4, 6, 14
One money rule travels with you to the sand. Bali's provincial tourism office checks the Love Bali levy voucher at tourist destinations as well as at the airport, and it has run in person checks at Uluwatu. Bali's visa and tourist levy guide has the current amount and covers how to pay it before you fly. 21
Your first morning, in order
Five moves, in this order, and you are in the water on your first morning. Each one rests on a price or a rule from a named source above.
Pay the Love Bali levy before you fly
Once per trip. The provincial tourism office checks the voucher at destinations as well as the airport, with Uluwatu among its named checkpoints. Keep the voucher on your phone. 21
Pick the break the night before, from the conditions
This is how Padang Padang Surf Camp decides: it chooses the next morning's beginner break from Padang Padang, Balangan, Dreamland, Toro Toro and Jimbaran, by what the swell and wind are doing. Copy the habit and check a tide table for your dates. 17
Start on the softest wave your level allows
Dreamland at low tide for a first lesson, 2 out of 10 for power and the break a named school chose for beginners. The Racetrack at mid tide once you stand up, for 300 to 400 metre rides. Impossibles at low tide when Uluwatu itself is beyond you. 11, 3, 2, 1, 10
A week of this and the reef starts to read like a timetable. If you want the same treatment for a diving base instead of a surfing one, pricing a month of shore diving in Amed runs the numbers on Bali's quiet east coast.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uluwatu good for beginners?
The main reef suits confident surfers, and the reef is sharp at dead low tide. The Racetrack section, straight out from the cave, is the entry level wave: 4 out of 10 for quality, very consistent, best at mid tide, with rides of 300 to 400 metres. For a genuine first lesson, named schools drive to Dreamland instead, a beach and reef break rated 2 out of 10 for power. 1, 2, 11, 3
How much is a surf lesson in Uluwatu?
IDR 400,000 a person in a group of three or more, IDR 500,000 semi-private and IDR 650,000 for a private two hour lesson at Bali Bisa Surf School. Hawaii Surf Bali matches the group and private figures and quotes IDR 1,000,000 for a semi-private session total. That is roughly $22 to $36 at Rp17,917 to the dollar on 25 September 2026. Board and rash guard are in the price. 3, 4, 5
Where can I rent a surfboard near Uluwatu?
Surf Lesson Bali delivers a board to Bingin, Padang Padang or Suluban for IDR 100,000 a day with a rash guard and reef booties. On the sand, Balangan's shacks ask about IDR 50,000 for two hours, Bingin about IDR 150,000 for two hours, and Padang Padang IDR 100,000 an hour. The delivered day rate is the value play. 6, 8, 9, 18
What tide should I surf Uluwatu on?
Uluwatu's wave quality holds across the tide, with the caution that the reef goes shallow and sharp at dead low. Section by section it shifts: the Racetrack works best from low to mid tide, and mid on Surf-Forecast's reading, the Peak at high tide, Temples from mid to high. Along the reef, Impossibles and Dreamland both want low tide. Check a tide table for your own dates. 14, 1, 10, 11
When is the best time of year to surf the Bukit?
May to October, the dry season, with a southwest swell and offshore wind from the southeast at every break on this page. Surf-Forecast's historical model puts Uluwatu's peak consistency in August, at 99 per cent of days clean and surfable, and Balangan's best month in July. 14, 16
Is Balangan surf worth the ride from Uluwatu?
Yes, if you want a long left and a quieter line-up than Uluwatu. It is a scooter ride away, parking is IDR 5,000, and at 3 out of 10 it asks less of you than Impossibles at 5. Go in July, its strongest month, and go at low or high tide - it works at both. 16, 8
What else will I pay for around Uluwatu?
The Love Bali levy applies once per trip, and the provincial tourism office checks the voucher at destinations including Uluwatu; see Bali's visa and tourist levy guide for the current amount. A private airport transfer covering the 18 kilometres from Ngurah Rai runs about IDR 250,000, near $13.95, for one to five people with tax and fuel included, over 30 to 45 minutes. 21, 19, 5
Where do surfers stay close to the breaks?
Padang Padang Surf Camp on Jl Labuan Sait in Pecatu publishes GBP 749 a week for a standard room to yourself, GBP 560 each a week for two sharing, and up to GBP 1,225 a week for a superior suite solo. Breakfast, lunch, the pool and daily resident coaching are included; lessons and most dinners are extra, and airport transfers come free on stays of seven nights or more. 22
