Uluwatu Kecak dance: tickets, timing and the temple

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

What the temple gate and the dance ticket cost in 2026, and which session you will actually sit in.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Temple entry is a government price: IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult, about USD 3.35. Badung Regency's Perda No. 8 of 2025 set the tariff for the Uluwatu outer area from 1 January 2026, and the ticket booth charges exactly that. 1, 2
  • The Kecak ticket is a separate purchase with three prices. IDR 150,000 for an adult at the gate, 140,000 on a pre-bought voucher, 135,000 booked online through the seller's own reservation flow. 3
  • One adult's evening at walk-up prices comes to IDR 214,000, about USD 11.94, counting temple entry, the dance ticket and a parked car. Booking the dance online first takes it to IDR 199,000. 1, 3, 4, 2
  • There are two sessions most nights, and the first one fills. Desa Adat Pecatu's secretary puts the 18:00 show at about 1,200 seats, usually full, and the 19:00 show at 800 to 900. Traffic on the access road pushes late arrivals into the second. 5
  • Sarong and sash come free with the ticket; the hat and the jewellery stay in your bag. The macaques at the gate are long-tailed macaques with a studied habit of taking an item and trading it back for food. 6, 7

The chant starts before the sun goes down

As many as 150 men sit in rings on an open-air stage and begin to chant. Cak. Cak-cak-cak. No gamelan, no drums, just voices and hands and the Indian Ocean about 70 metres below the cliff. Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands at the southwestern tip of Bali, and the stage sits on the rock beside it. 8, 7

The first show starts at 18:00. On 25 September 2026 the sun went down here at 18:16, so the first scenes play in daylight and the fire comes once the sky has gone. Sita is taken. Hanuman goes looking. About an hour later the fire scene has finished and the audience is walking back to the car park. 3, 9, 8, 10

Two tickets buy that evening, and both are small money. Temple entry for a foreign adult is IDR 60,000, a rate Badung Regency set from 1 January 2026. The dance is a separate ticket at IDR 150,000 if you pay at the gate. Parking a car costs 4,000. What follows is when to arrive and how to keep your sunglasses. 1, 3, 4

How much is Uluwatu Temple entry in 2026?

The entrance fee sits in a regency regulation, so the booth price can be checked against a published tariff.

The entrance fee is a government price, not a gate price. Badung Regency's Perda No. 8 of 2025 set the tariff for the Uluwatu Temple outer area from 1 January 2026: IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult and 40,000 for a foreign child. Indonesian visitors pay 40,000 and 30,000. The head of the Regency tourism office named those figures himself. 1

Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. The entry tariff comes from Badung Regency's own regulation, effective 1 January 2026. The parking figures come from one named operator's ticket page, last checked with site management on 3 January 2026; no official schedule for parking was found. 2, 1, 4

Buy at the booth. The entry ticket is sold on site only, in cash or by QRIS, and the temple gate runs 07:00 to 19:00 WITA. A visitor-information site carrying the same 60,000 and 40,000 on its own fee page adds that the sarong and sash come with the ticket. 4, 11

Badung Regency's tourism department lists the cliffside Kecak performance on its own destination page for the temple, beside the sunset, so the dance is part of the site as the Regency presents it. The price of that dance is another matter. 12

Kecak tickets: three prices for the same hour

The dance ticket is separate from temple entry, and it comes at three prices. Walk up to the gate and an adult pays IDR 150,000. A pre-bought voucher is 140,000. Booked online through the seller's own reservation flow it is 135,000. Children pay roughly half at every tier. 3

The seller's own page gives the child band as 4 to 9 for the gate ticket and 2 to 9 for the online one, and a second visitor-information site gives 2 to 9 at the gate. Ask at the booth if your child is near the line. Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate for 25 September 2026. 3, 11, 2

Badung Regency publishes the entrance fee. The three dance prices here come from the ticket seller's own page, so check them against the board at the gate. 1, 3

What does the whole evening cost?

One adult, walk-up prices, one car. Arithmetic on sourced prices; nobody sells the evening as a package.

Temple, dance and a parked car: IDR 214,000, about USD 11.94. That is one adult paying on the night at Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 25 September 2026. Book the dance ticket online first and the evening falls to IDR 199,000, about USD 11.11. Transport to Uluwatu sits on top. 1, 3, 4, 2

Two adults and two children work out at IDR 654,000, about USD 36.50, with one car parked: 210,000 a head for the adults and 115,000 for each child at gate prices. That is the whole family in for less than one beach-club lunch. 1, 3, 4, 2

Then there is the island-wide charge. Bali's provincial government charges foreign visitors a one-time tourist levy, and its tourism office has run voucher checks at Uluwatu itself as well as at the airport. MMT's Bali visa and tourist levy page has the current amount and walks through the process. 13

What time is the Kecak dance at Uluwatu?

The ticket page lists one show. The village that runs the site describes two.

The ticket page says 18:00 to 19:00, daily. In practice there are two sessions. I Wayan Wijana, secretary of Desa Adat Pecatu, told a Bali news outlet in September 2026 that the first show holds about 1,200 people and is almost always full, and that a second at 19:00 draws 800 to 900. 3, 5

Traffic decides who sits where. Wijana said congestion on the road into the tourism zone has pushed first-session ticket holders into the second show. Badung Regency is building a parking area of about 2.5 hectares outside the zone to take the pressure off. Until it opens, the queue is the schedule. 5

  1. 16:00, the performance gate opens

The visitor-information site puts the performance gate's opening at 4 PM, two hours before the chant and separate from the temple's own 07:00 to 19:00 gate. The operator page that checks its prices with site management suggests arriving between 16:30 and 17:00. 11, 4

  2. Buy both tickets at the booth

Entry is cash or QRIS, on site, and the sarong and sash are handed over free with it. The dance ticket is the separate one, and the cheaper way in is to have reserved it already. 4, 6, 3

  3. Walk the cliff path before you sit

The temple stands about 70 metres above the water and the paths run along the edge. Climbing or sitting on the boundary walls is on the temple's own list of things to leave alone, for the obvious reason. 7, 6

  4. 18:00, the chant starts

Sunset on 25 September 2026 fell at 18:16, sixteen minutes into the hour. Sunset moves through the year, so look up your own date before you decide which session you want. 9

  5. Late in the hour, the fire scene

Flames come once the sky has darkened, staged with controlled fire, trained performers and monitoring staff, at the point in the Ramayana story where danger meets protection. 10

The dance runs every night except two: the day before Nyepi and Nyepi itself, the island's day of silence. Bali keeps that day for itself, and the stage stays dark. 3

Will the Uluwatu monkeys take your sunglasses?

The macaques at Uluwatu are long-tailed macaques, and some of them run a trade. Researchers studying primate behaviour at the temple found the monkeys take an item, hold on to it, and hand it back for food. The skill passes down to their young, and newly arrived troops learn it from the residents. 7

  • Zip everything away before the gate. Sunglasses, phones and small accessories go inside a bag that closes properly. 11
  • Leave the hat and the jewellery behind. Both sit on the temple's own list of things to keep out, for exactly this reason. 6
  • Feeding, touching, chasing and teasing are all out. The temple asks visitors to keep their distance and their hands to themselves. 11
  • Lost something? Find a staff member. Chasing a macaque along a clifftop path ends badly. Staff handle the retrieval. 11

The monkeys live in the temple's forest, and the site treats them as part of the place, often describing them as its guardians. Watching one hold a stolen pair of sunglasses just out of reach until the fruit appears is part of the evening. Losing a prescription lens an hour before the show is the version to plan against. 11

What to wear, and the rules the temple sets

A sarong and a sash, both free, both handed to you with the ticket. Staff will help you tie them. Dress modestly above the waist as well, since the sarong covers the lower body only. That guidance is the temple's own, printed on its visitor page. 6, 11

  • Sacred zones are for worshippers and authorized staff. The public grounds and the cliff paths are the visitor's part of the site. 6
  • Boundary walls stay clear. The temple calls the cliffs steep and dangerous, and asks visitors to keep off the walls. 6
  • Food and drink stay outside the temple area. So do sharp objects, knives included. 6
  • Hats and jewellery come off before the gate, because the macaques take them. 6
  • Drones need authorization. Flying one without it is on the temple's list of prohibitions. 6

These rules come from a visitor-information site written in the temple's voice. The board at the gate carries the version that governs. 6

Is the Kecak dance an ancient ritual?

Kecak was built in the 1930s, and Indonesia's own tourism ministry says so plainly. Wayan Limbak, a Balinese dancer, and Walter Spies, a German painter living on the island, adapted the sanghyang trance ritual and set the Ramayana inside it, for an audience of foreign visitors. Limbak then toured Balinese groups abroad and made the form famous. 14, 8

The credit sits mostly on the Balinese side of that pairing. The performer and scholar I Wayan Dibia records that Balinese artists, Limbak among them, were already working baris movements into the cak leader's role through the 1920s, before Spies arrived, and that Spies suggested building a Ramayana spectacle on what they had made. 8

Knowing the date makes the hour better. What you watch is a living Balinese art form with a birthday, performed nightly by the customary village beside its own temple, on a stage the Regency's tourism department lists as part of the destination. It earns its audience every night at 18:00. 8, 12, 5

The story runs in one arc: Rama and Sita in exile, the golden deer, Sita carried off by Ravana, Hanuman's search, and the battle where the Vanaras win her back. As many as 150 chanters hold the sound together while a smaller group dances the named parts. There is no gamelan. It runs about an hour. 8, 14

Getting to Uluwatu, and where the evening fits

Uluwatu is about 18 km from Ngurah Rai airport, 30 to 45 minutes when the road behaves. A named transfer operator prices a private car at IDR 250,000 for one to five people, about USD 13.95, with tax and fuel in the figure. 15, 2

Come down from Canggu or Ubud on the evening itself and the drive becomes the risk, because the access road backs up before the first session. A night on the Bukit Peninsula removes the problem, and MMT's where to stay in Uluwatu prices the areas against each other. 5

For the wider trip, the one month in Bali itinerary places this evening inside a route, the Indonesia travel guide covers arrival and the islands, and Amed prices a shore-diving base on the quiet east coast.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a temple ticket as well as a dance ticket?

Budget for both. Badung Regency's regulation prices entry to the Uluwatu outer area at IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult, and the Kecak ticket is sold separately at 150,000 at the gate. The stage stands beside the temple inside that same area, and the Regency's own destination page lists the performance as part of the site. 1, 3, 12

Can I buy the Uluwatu temple ticket online?

The entry ticket is sold at the booth on the day, in cash or by QRIS, per the operator page that last checked with site management on 3 January 2026. The Kecak ticket is the one with an online route, at IDR 135,000 for an adult against 150,000 at the gate. Carry rupiah for the parking either way. 4, 3

What time should I arrive for the Kecak dance?

The performance gate opens at 4 PM, and an operator page suggests 16:30 to 17:00 so the temple walk happens before the 18:00 chant. Give the road extra time: the secretary of Desa Adat Pecatu says congestion has pushed first-session ticket holders into the 19:00 show. 11, 4, 5

Does the Kecak dance work with children?

Child tickets run IDR 75,000 at the gate and 65,000 online, and the show lasts about an hour with a fire scene late on, staged with controlled flames and monitoring staff. The age band reads 4 to 9 on one page and 2 to 9 on another, so ask at the booth. A family of four at gate prices comes to IDR 654,000 with parking, about USD 36.50. 3, 10, 11, 2

A macaque took my phone. What happens now?

Find temple staff. The site asks visitors to report it and to leave the chasing alone, and the macaques here are known for handing items back in exchange for food, a habit researchers watched them teach their young. Keep everything zipped from the car park onward. 11, 7

Does the Kecak dance run every night?

Every night except two: the day before Nyepi and Nyepi itself, the island's day of silence. Nyepi moves with the Balinese saka calendar each year, so check the date against your travel dates before you book. No source found here lists other ceremony-day closures at the temple, so confirm those with your driver or your accommodation too. 3

Do I pay Bali's tourist levy on top of this?

Yes, once per trip. Bali's provincial government charges foreign visitors a one-time tourist levy, and its tourism office has run voucher checks at destinations including Uluwatu as well as at the airport. MMT's Bali visa and tourist levy page has the current amount. Pay online before you fly and keep the voucher on your phone. 13

Can I fly a drone over Uluwatu Temple?

Only with authorization. The temple's guidelines put drones alongside sharp objects, outside food and drink, and climbing on the boundary walls above a 70-metre drop. Treat the board at the gate as the current version. 6, 7
