Komodo diving: which sites match your level

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The three sites divers arrive asking for, what the current does at each, and what a certified diving day costs at two named Labuan Bajo shops in September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Two of the three headline sites are advanced dives. Dive Komodo tags Batu Bolong and Castle Rock advanced, and tags Manta Point beginner friendly. One trip that wants all three wants a group comfortable in current. 1
  • A day boat with three guided dives costs IDR 2,750,000 at Dive Komodo and from IDR 2,600,000 at Scuba Republic, about $153 and $145 at Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 25 September 2026. Both fares leave the park ticket out. 2, 3, 4
  • An Open Water card is the working floor, and the guide picks the site on the day. Scuba Republic says Open Water divers dive Komodo safely, with the strongest-current sites held for higher certifications. 3, 2
  • Budget IDR 275,000 per diver per day for the park itself, about $15: the IDR 250,000 foreign entrance ticket plus the IDR 25,000 diving ticket. Shops quote different totals, so get yours in writing. 5, 3, 4
  • Manta Point is a 2 km drift over rubble and sand, with coral bommies working as cleaning stations. Come for the mantas, sharks and bumphead parrotfish, and expect little reef. 3

Three sites, three different days

Batu Bolong sits in the middle of the Lintah Strait, and the current runs at it all day. Divers work the sheltered side while the rock falls away to 75 metres under their fins. Elsewhere in the park, Manta Point is flat and wide, a drift over 2 km of rubble and sand where mantas hold above cleaning stations. One park, one morning boat, two completely different dives. 3

The three names in the title are the ones most divers arrive with, and they split cleanly by current. Dive Komodo, a PADI 5-Star shop in Labuan Bajo, tags Batu Bolong and Castle Rock as advanced sites and Manta Point as beginner friendly. Komodo Resort's own conditions table rates the first two variable to strong, the third mild to moderate. 1, 6

The park authority asks for one thing: a certification card.

Diving without one at a park dive site is a listed prohibited act. Every level judgment above that floor belongs to the shop, made on the morning of the dive, site by site, from the tide and from the divers who turn up. 7, 2

Manta Point (Karang Makassar)Beginner friendly, manta raysMild to moderate, best at slack or rising tideA gentle drift over 2 km of rubble, past manta cleaning stations

Level tags are Dive Komodo's own, from its site list read on 26 September 2026. Current ratings and tidal windows are Komodo Resort's, from its own conditions table. The park's wider site list also carries Manta Alley, Yellow Wall, the Cauldron and Tatawa Besar. 8

Batu Bolong: the pinnacle in the Lintah Strait

The rock is both the attraction and the reason for the level tag. Batu Bolong rises in the middle of the Lintah Strait, exposed to serious current, and shops dive it on the sheltered lee side. The pinnacle drops to 75 metres. Recreational limits keep divers well above that, and the figure tells you the scale of the thing you are hanging off. 3

Fish stack up where the current hits.

Dive Komodo describes a density of marine life on the pinnacle, with whitetip sharks and giant trevally passing through, and its own tag for the site reads advanced and top site in one breath. Water at Batu Bolong's own zone, Central Komodo, runs 24°C to 27°C, on a 3mm to 5mm wetsuit. 1, 9

Castle Rock: a blue-water descent onto the jacks

Castle Rock starts in open water, with nothing to hold. Divers drop off the boat into blue and swim down onto the seamount, where schooling jacks and grey reef sharks work the current. Dive Komodo's own tag for the site reads advanced, strong current, pelagic. Komodo Resort calls it channel-fed and asks for a tight tidal window. 1, 6

Crystal Rock, the saddle next door, is the softer version of the same idea: tagged all levels with current, orange anthias over the top, morays in the cracks. Both sit in the same water, which is why a boat can put a cautious group on one and a confident group on the other. Shops choose that split on the morning of the dive. 1, 2

Manta Point: 2 km of rubble and cleaning stations

Manta Point is the largest dive site in Komodo and the least like a reef. Scuba Republic, which calls it Makassar, measures it at over 2 km and describes a bottom poor in coral, studded with bommies that work as cleaning stations. Sharks, turtles and bumphead parrotfish pass through it as well as mantas. 3

The drift is gentle by Komodo standards. Dive Komodo tags the site beginner friendly and has divers drifting through shallow water past the stations, and Komodo Resort rates the current mild to moderate, best on slack or a rising tide. The site sits about 35 km from Labuan Bajo, roughly 1.5 hours by speedboat and 3.5 hours by phinisi. 1, 6, 10

What experience level do you need to dive Komodo?

The floor two Labuan Bajo shops publish, and the sites each level gets.

An Open Water card is the working floor, and the shop picks the site to match it. Scuba Republic's own answer is direct: with an Open Water certification you can dive Komodo safely, its team selects sites for your level, and the advanced sites with stronger currents are held for higher certifications. Divers new to current start on easy sites and get eased into drift diving. 3

Dive Komodo takes certified divers on its day boat and sends first-timers to Discovery Scuba with an instructor. It selects sites daily from weather, tides, currents, visibility and the experience level of the group. The liveaboard side of the same market asks for the same floor: Situju7 requests a minimum Open Water certification from its guests. 2, 11

Where the advanced framing earns its keep is the north. Dive Komodo's own zone guide calls the northern sites mainly suitable for experienced divers, on the strength of the current, and Castle Rock sits up there. Batu Bolong sits in Central Komodo, the zone the same guide calls the park's most diverse, running from calm coral gardens to current-swept pinnacles at 24°C to 27°C. The south is cooler, 20°C to 24°C, and wants a full 5mm suit. 9

  • Open Water, a handful of dives, no current behind you: ask for the beginner-tagged sites. Manta Point, Siaba Besar, Sabolon and Pink Beach are the ones Dive Komodo groups that way. 1
  • Open Water, comfortable in a drift: Crystal Rock, Mawan and Sebayur Kecil carry all-levels tags, current included. 1
  • Advanced, with current dives logged: Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, the Cauldron and Golden Passage. Langkoi Rock the same shop reserves for experts. 1
  • No card at all: Discovery Scuba puts you in the water with an instructor for IDR 3,000,000, about $167, and a snorkeling seat on the same boat costs IDR 1,300,000, about $73. 2, 4
  • Dry for a few years: a refresher dive is IDR 600,000 at Dive Komodo, about $33, and $30 at Scuba Republic. Book it for the day before you want a pinnacle. 2, 3, 4

How much does a day of diving in Komodo cost?

Two named Labuan Bajo shops, their own published rates on 26 September 2026, park tickets billed separately by both.

A certified diver pays IDR 2,750,000 at Dive Komodo, about $153, for a day boat with three guided dives. Scuba Republic starts at IDR 2,600,000, about $145, for three dives with free rental gear and four divers to a guide. The park's tickets ride on top at both shops. 2, 3, 4

Dive Komodo's own page shows about $172 for its day boat, some 12 percent above the bank-rate figure of $153.49, so read operators' dollar stickers as estimates and budget the rupiah. Scuba Republic prices its add-ons in dollars: action camera $18, 15-litre tank $15, private divemaster $75, SSI adventure dive $80. 2, 3, 4

The park's own tickets are about a tenth of the day. The two shops' three-dive days sit IDR 150,000 apart, about $8, which is a ninth of what Scuba Republic charges for a private divemaster. Source: 2, 3, 5

Per dive, the two shops land within IDR 50,000 of each other: IDR 916,667 at Dive Komodo and IDR 866,667 at Scuba Republic, about $51 and $48. Divide the fare by three and the choice stops being about money. It turns on the boat, the guide ratio and what the gear rental covers. 2, 3, 4

What does the park charge a diver?

Budget IDR 275,000 per diver per day for the park itself, about $15. That is the IDR 250,000 foreign entrance ticket the park authority announced in October 2024, flat on weekdays and holidays, plus the IDR 25,000 diving ticket the same announcement keeps separate because diving needs its own skills and equipment. The tariff change was an Indonesian government decision, effective 30 October 2024. 5, 4

The two rows the park authority announced add to the same IDR 275,000 that one shop quotes for the entrance ticket on its own, so the totals agree by coincidence. Dollar figures convert at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR of IDR 17,917.00 per USD on 25 September 2026. 5, 3

Shops quote their own totals, and they disagree. Scuba Republic prints IDR 275,000 for the entrance ticket alone, mandatory and set by the government, and excludes it from the fare. Dive Komodo also charges park fees separately in every tier. Ask your shop in writing what it will collect before you fly, and hold rupiah for it. 3, 2

The ticket is one line in a bigger park budget. MMT's Komodo National Park guide covers the charges for the rest of a week here, from dragon treks to drone permits, and the marine park and conservation fees article covers the budget lines divers miss everywhere else in the world.

What does the day look like from the dock?

Both shops run one long day, and they start an hour apart. Scuba Republic checks divers in at 06:30 and is tied up again by 15:30. Dive Komodo boards at 06:45 and comes back between 16:00 and 17:00. Boarding times are each shop's own, with no park-wide clock behind them. 3, 2

  1. 06:30 or 06:45, check in

Scuba Republic checks in at its dive centre at 06:30, Dive Komodo boards at 06:45. Gear sizing and paperwork happen here, which is where your logged-dive count gets said out loud. 3, 2

  2. 07:30, out of the harbour

Scuba Republic's boat leaves Labuan Bajo at 07:30. The run out to the dive sites is the longest single leg of the day, on a speedboat or a slower phinisi depending on the boat booked. 3, 10

  3. 09:00 to 11:00, the first descent

Scuba Republic dives at 09:00. Dive Komodo reaches its first site around Central Komodo between 10:00 and 11:00. The choice of site is made that morning, from weather, tides, currents, visibility and the level of the group aboard. 3, 2

  4. 11:30 and 14:00, dives two and three

Scuba Republic publishes 11:30 and 14:00, with lunch aboard at 13:00. Dive Komodo dives at midday and mid-afternoon and calls its own timetable a general guideline. 3, 2

  5. 15:30 to 17:00, alongside again

Scuba Republic is back by 15:30, Dive Komodo between 16:00 and 17:00. That hour decides whether an evening flight out of Labuan Bajo is a sensible idea. 3, 2

September and October are kind months for this water. Komodo Resort's own conditions table reads 25°C with 15 m to 25 m of visibility and variable current in September, on reliable big-fish sites, and 26°C with 20 m to 25 m and moderate current in October, which it calls excellent all round as calmer seas return. 6

Whose water this is

The sites on this page sit in somebody's home water. The Ata Modo, descendants of Komodo Island's original people, still live inside the park today. 12 UNESCO's own description of the biosphere reserve names them alongside resident Komodo, Bima and Manggarai communities and migrant Bajo and Bugis communities. 12

Every boat on this page leaves from Labuan Bajo, in Manggarai country on western Flores. The Manggarai number about 725,000 across the West Manggarai, Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies. 13

  • The names divers use are local names. Manta Point is Karang Makassar, and one shop calls it simply Makassar. Batu Bolong is the rock in the Lintah Strait. 10, 3
  • The park's rules bind visitors, with teeth. Uncertified diving, anchoring in manta habitat and high-speed running near dive sites are all listed prohibited acts, and a serious breach carries a six-month blacklist from the park. 7
  • Fee changes are Indonesian government decisions. The October 2024 tariff change is the one that set the IDR 250,000 ticket a foreign diver pays today. 5
  • The rest of the week starts elsewhere. MMT's Indonesia country guide covers arrival and island choices, and the Komodo trip cost page prices the flights and the nights around the diving.

Frequently asked questions

Which Komodo dive sites suit a first trip?

Start with the ones the shops tag for beginners. Dive Komodo groups Manta Point, Siaba Besar, Sabolon and Pink Beach that way, and Komodo Resort rates Manta Point mild to moderate and Siaba Besar mild. Crystal Rock, Mawan and Sebayur Kecil carry all-levels tags with current, which makes them the next step up. 1, 6

Do I need Advanced Open Water to dive Komodo?

For the park, no: the only rule the park authority publishes is that divers hold a certification, and uncertified diving at a park dive site is a prohibited act. For the marquee current sites, shops apply their own filter. Scuba Republic holds its advanced, stronger-current sites for higher certifications, and Dive Komodo tags Batu Bolong and Castle Rock advanced. 7, 3, 1

How much does a Komodo dive day cost in 2026?

IDR 2,750,000 at Dive Komodo for three guided dives with full equipment, about $153, and from IDR 2,600,000 at Scuba Republic for three dives with free rental gear and four divers to a guide, about $145. Add IDR 275,000 for the park's entrance and diving tickets. Dollar figures use Bank Indonesia's rate for 25 September 2026. 2, 3, 5, 4

Do dive shops include the Komodo park fee?

No. Both shops on this page charge it separately, and they quote different amounts. The park authority announced IDR 250,000 for a foreign visitor per day plus an IDR 25,000 diving ticket in October 2024. Scuba Republic's own page states IDR 275,000 for the entrance ticket alone. Carry rupiah and get the figure from your shop in writing. 5, 3, 2

Can I see mantas at Manta Point without a dive card?

Yes. A snorkeling seat on Dive Komodo's day boat costs IDR 1,300,000, about $73, on the same boat and the same sites with no tanks. Manta Point is shallow and gentle enough for it, and boats moor rather than anchoring, because park rules bar anchoring in manta habitat and transit routes. 2, 1, 7, 4

How far is Manta Point from Labuan Bajo?

About 35 km, which is roughly 1.5 hours on a speedboat and 3.5 hours on a phinisi, per one Labuan Bajo operator's own working figures. That run is why a dive day starts at 06:30 or 06:45 and ends between 15:30 and 17:00. 10, 3, 2

Is September or October better for diving Komodo?

October, on one dive centre's own month-by-month table: 26°C water, 20 m to 25 m of visibility, moderate current, and calmer seas returning. September reads 25°C, 15 m to 25 m of visibility and variable current, on what the same table calls reliable big-fish sites. Both months are working months in the north. 6

What wetsuit should I bring to Komodo?

It depends on the zone. Dive Komodo's own conditions guide puts the north at 26°C to 29°C, where a 3mm suit or a shorty does the job, Central Komodo at 24°C to 27°C on a 3mm to 5mm suit, and the south at 20°C to 24°C, which wants a full 5mm. Castle Rock sits in the northern band; Batu Bolong sits in the Central band on the same guide's own site list. 9
